Predicting outbreaks: a spatial risk assessment of West Nile virus in British Columbia.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNv) has recently emerged as a health threat to the North American population. After the initial disease outbre … ndance of the mosquitoes. After including human population data, Greater Vancouver, due to its high population density, increases in significance relative to the other areas. CONCLUSION: Creating a raster-based mosquito abundance map enabled us to quantitatively evaluate WNv risk throughout BC and to identify the areas of greatest potential risk, prior to WNv intro …

Arbovirus circulation, temporal distribution, and abundance of mosquito species in two Carolina bay habitats.

Carolina bays, a type of geomorphic feature, may be important in the ecology of mosquito vectors in South Carolina. Their hydrology varies from wetland habitats with marked flooding/drying regimes to permanently flooded spring-fed lakes. Moreover, they possess characteristics that contribute to the support of a particularly abundant and diverse invertebrate fauna. Although it has been estimated that 2,700+ bays exist in South Carolina, approximately 97% have been altered; < or = 200 bays remain intact, and only 36 are protected by state-funded conservation projects. We conducted a study in two

Socio-economic and environmental factors and human health example of cholera El Tor in Manila.

The environmental health factors relevant to the occurrence of cholera in an urban milieu (Manila) have been studied. Cholera has been found to be a disease significantly more prevalent in the areas with lowest environmental condition. Association have been found between the disease incidence and several socioeconomic variables: population density, water and sewer connections each per 1000 population and squatter/slum dweller density. The correlation between cholera incidence and population density was found to be statistically significant at 5% level. A multiple regression analysis showed tha…

Urban density and depression during COVID-19 in Seoul: Moderating effects of social participation.

The COVID-19 pandemic, a global public health crisis, has had a profound and long-lasting impact on mental health worldwide. While existing studies on the pandemic have examined the relationship between urban characteristics and mental health, there remains a lack of understanding of the temporal distinctions of the pandemic, age-specific differences, and the role of social participation. This study empirically analyzed the relationship between COVID-19-related depressive symptoms and urban density characteristics, with a focus on the moderating effect of social participation by age group and

Parasite invasion following host reintroduction: a case study of Yellowstone's wolves.

Wildlife reintroductions select or treat individuals for good health with the expectation that these individuals will fare better than infected animals. However, these individuals, new to their environment, may also be particularly susceptible to circulating infections and this may result in high morbidity and mortality, potentially jeopardizing the goals of recovery. Here, using the reintroduction of the grey wolf (Canis lupus) into Yellowstone National Park as a case study, we address the question of how parasites invade a reintroduced population and consider the impact of these invasions on

West Nile virus in mosquitoes of northern Ohio, 2003.

From June 19, 2003 to August 18, 2003, we surveyed the mosquitoes of Oberlin, OH, for West Nile Virus (WNV) infection using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. A total of 12,055 mosquitoes, representing 17 species or species groups and 4 genera, were collected in gravid traps at seven sites throughout the city, with Culex pipiens/restuans being the most abundant and showing the highest minimum infection rate (MIR) of 0.78. This represents a decrease in WNV enzootic activity from the previous year. Both Cx. pipiens/restuans abundance and MIR increased significantly with date. Howev

Emerging or re-emerging bacterial zoonotic diseases: bartonellosis, leptospirosis, Lyme borreliosis, plague.

There are a whole series of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases present in the Northern Hemisphere and the author describes four of them, namely, bartonellosis, leptospirosis, Lyme borreliosis and plague. Reasons for the emergence or re-emergence of such diseases are not clear, but factors such as human demographics, economic development and land use, international travel and commerce, and microbial adaptation, are thought to be involved. Control of emerging and re-emerging diseases has become a major challenge for the international community and it is important to disseminate informati

The epidemiology and population biology of Necator americanus infection in a rural community in Zimbabwe.

Baseline data from an epidemiological study of hookworm infection in a rural community in Zimbabwe are presented. The infection status of an age-stratified sample of the community was assessed using anthelmintic expulsion techniques. Necator americanus was the only helminth parasite found to be present. The age-prevalence and intensity profiles rose asymptotically to an adult prevalence of about 80% and adult mean burden of 7.7 worms per host. The overall mean burden was 4.8 worms per host. The frequency distribution of N. americanus was overdispersed and well described by the negative binomia

[Geographies of mortality from COVID-19 in Argentina: social and urban-rural inequalities in different waves of spread].

We analyzed the socio-spatial and urban-rural inequalities of COVID-19 mortality between four waves of spread in Argentina, during 2020-2022. A retrospective ecological study design was used considering the population residing in Argentina, and analyzing two populations: up to 59 years and 60+ years. The spatial units were the departments. Bayesian hierarchical models were estimated to analyze the association between mortality risk and the percentage of households with unmet basic needs (UBN) and population density. There were different geographies of COVID-19 mortality among the four waves. T…

Impacts of Heterogeneous Host Densities and Contact Rates on Pathogen Transmission in the Channel Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis).

Diseases threaten wildlife populations worldwide and have caused severe declines resulting in host species being listed as threatened or endangered. The risk of a widespread epidemic is especially high when pathogens are introduced to naive host populations, often leading to high morbidity and mortality. Prevention and control of these epidemics is based on knowledge of what drives pathogen transmission among hosts. Previous disease outbreaks suggest the spread of directly transmitted pathogens is determined by host contact rates and local host density. While theoretical models of disease spre

Enzootic plague reduces black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) survival in Montana.

Black-footed ferrets (Mustela nigripes) require extensive prairie dog colonies (Cynomys spp.) to provide habitat and prey. Epizootic plague kills both prairie dogs and ferrets and is a major factor limiting recovery of the highly endangered ferret. In addition to epizootics, we hypothesized that enzootic plague, that is, presence of disease-causing Yersinia pestis without any noticeable prairie dog die off, may also affect ferret survival. We reduced risk of plague on portions of two ferret reintroduction areas by conducting flea control for 3 years. Beginning in 2004, about half of the ferret

Neighbourhood walkability, road density and socio-economic status in Sydney, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Planning and transport agencies play a vital role in influencing the design of townscapes, travel modes and travel behaviors, which in turn impact on the walkability of neighbourhoods and residents' physical activity opportunities. Optimising neighbourhood walkability is desirable in built environments, however, the population health benefits of walkability may be offset by increased exposure to traffic related air pollution. This paper describes the spatial distribution of neighbourhood walkability and weighted road density, a marker for traffic related air pollution, in Sydney, A

Prediction of equine risk of West Nile virus infection based on dead bird surveillance.

Since the introduction of West Nile Virus (WNV) to the United States in 1999, the efficacy of dead bird surveillance for the prediction of human and veterinary WNV infection has been an issue of debate. We utilized South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control surveillance data from 2003 to determine whether dead bird surveillance accurately predicts equine WNV infection on a county level. We adjusted for human population density as a potential confounder of an association between WNV-positive dead bird counts and mammalian WNV risk. We found a strong positive association bet…

Urban growth and decline: San Jose and St. Louis in the 1960's.

The population changes in San Jose and St. Louis between 1960 and 1970 exemplify the two broad trends-urban formation followed by metropolitan dispersal-that have shaped 20th-century urbanization in this country. The fact that these developmental trends were expressed through demographic processes found to be common to both cities, despite their contrasting recent experiences, suggests that generalizations can be made about the complex forces underlying urbanization. The formation of metropolitan San Jose's population parallels the traditional process whereby a region's growth comes to be focu
