Social and ethnic-racial inequities of physical accessibility to famers' markets in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Farmers' markets are important spaces for the commercialization of fruits and vegetables, which access by the urban population is considered one of the key aspects of healthy cities. This study adopts an ecological approach with geographic-spatial emphasis to describe accessibility to farmers' markets in Porto Alegre-RS, by four different modes of transport (walking, bicycle, bus, and car) and their associations with income and race/skin color. The distribution of markets across the city is more balanced than other food establishments, although physical accessibility is highly uneven across mo

Sociodemographic Survival Disparities for Lung Cancer in the United States, 2000-2016.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the impact of patient and tumor characteristics on lung cancer survival can help build personalized prognostic models and identify health disparities. METHODS: We identified 557 555 patients aged 25 years and older diagnosed with lung or bronchus carcinoma from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, 2000-2016. We estimated hazard ratios (HR) for demographic (sex, age, race and ethnicity), tumor (stage, histology, year of diagnosis), and geographic characteristics (census tract-level urbanicity, socioeconomic status [SES]), as well as selected inter

Barriers to utilize nutrition interventions among lactating women in rural communities of Tigray, northern Ethiopia: An exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: While lactation is a physiological process requiring high energy demand to fulfill the nutrient requirements of the mother and the breastfeeding child, many factors affecting maternal nutrient intake can lead to nutritional deficits. Previous studies in Ethiopia have reported the prevalence of maternal and child undernutrition and related complications. However, qualitative studies exploring potential barriers to utilizing available nutrition interventions are limited. This study, therefore, sought to qualitatively explore barriers hindering the uptake of nutrition services among l

Race biology.

BACKGROUND: The founders of Hereditas envisioned that race biology would be a major subject that had social applications with utmost importance in the near future. Anthropometrics was in this context understood to be the pure and eugenics the applied science. Sweden had a long tradition in physical anthropometry. Herman Lundborg, member of the advisory board of Hereditas, united the anthropometric and eugenic approaches in a synthesis. He was the first head of the Institute for Race Biology in Sweden. The contents of Hereditas reflect the development of race biology in the Nordic countries. C

Pregnancy outcomes among women born in Somalia and Sweden giving birth in the Stockholm area - a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Studies report that women born in some African countries, after migrating to the Nordic countries, have worse pregnancy outcomes than women born in the receiving countries. With the aim of identifying unmet needs among Somali-born women, we here study this subgroup. OBJECTIVE: We compared pregnancy outcomes among women born in Somalia to women born in Sweden. Further, we investigated whether the proactive maternal observation of fetal movements has effects on birth outcomes among women born in Somalia. METHODS: In Stockholm, half of the maternity clinics were randomized to interv

A Population-Based Study of Incidence and Survival of 1588 Thymic Malignancies: Results From the California Cancer Registry.

BACKGROUND: Thymic malignancies are rare and there are limited contemporary population-based epidemiological studies for this uncommon cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adults aged 20 years and older diagnosed with thymic malignancies between 1988 and 2015 were identified from the California Cancer Registry (n = 1588). Trends in age-adjusted incidence rates were examined overall and according to race/ethnicity, and the proportion diagnosed according to stage was evaluated over time. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS), and Fine an

Population-based relative risks for specific family history constellations of breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Using a large resource linking genealogy with decades of cancer data, a non-traditional approach was used to estimate individualized risk for breast cancer (BC) based on specific family history extending to first cousins, providing a clearer picture of the contribution of various aspects of both close and distant combinations of affected relatives. METHODS: RRs for BC were estimated in 640,366 females for a representative set of breast cancer family history constellations that included number of first- (FDR), second-(SDR), and third-degree relatives (TDR), maternal and paternal relat

A systematic review of prevention interventions to reduce prenatal alcohol exposure and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in indigenous communities.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a preventable, lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. FASD negatively impacts individual Indigenous communities around the world. Although many prevention interventions have been developed and implemented, they have not been adequately evaluated. This systematic review updates the evidence for the effectiveness of FASD prevention interventions in Indigenous/Aboriginal populations internationally, and in specific populations in North America and New Zealand, and offers recommendations for future work. Herpes zoster, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2000-2016.

During 2000-2016, a total of 52,895 active component service members received incident diagnoses of herpes zoster (HZ), for an overall unadjusted incidence rate of 2.5 cases per 1,000 person-years (p-yrs). Compared to their respective counterparts, overall incidence rates of HZ were highest among females, those aged 50 years or older, and Air Force members. Overall rates generally increased with increasing age and were highest among non-Hispanic whites and Asian/Pacific Islanders and lowest among non-Hispanic blacks. Unadjusted annual incidence rates of HZ increased steadily from 2000 to a pea

Landscape structure affects the prevalence and distribution of a tick-borne zoonotic pathogen.

BACKGROUND: Landscape structure can affect pathogen prevalence and persistence with consequences for human and animal health. Few studies have examined how reservoir host species traits may interact with landscape structure to alter pathogen communities and dynamics. Using a landscape of islands and mainland sites we investigated how natural landscape fragmentation affects the prevalence and persistence of the zoonotic tick-borne pathogen complex Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato), which causes Lyme borreliosis. We hypothesized that the prevalence of B. burgdorferi (s.l.) would be lower on isla

Illness experiences of diabetes in the context of malaria in settings experiencing double burden of disease in southeastern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Tanzania is doubly burdened with both non-communicable and infectious diseases, but information on how Tanzanians experience the co-existence of these conditions is limited. Using Kleinman's eight prompting questions the study synthesizes explanatory models from patients to describe common illness experiences of diabetes in a rural setting where malaria is the predominant health threat. METHODS: We conducted 17 focus group discussions with adult members of the general community, diabetes patients, neighbours and relatives of diabetes patients to gain insight into shared experience

Breastfeeding and asthma outcomes at the age of 6 years: The Generation R Study.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is associated with a lower risk of asthma symptoms in early childhood, but its effect at older ages remains unclear. We examined the associations of duration and exclusiveness of breastfeeding with asthma outcomes in children aged 6 years, and whether these associations were explained by atopic or infectious mechanisms. METHODS: We performed a population-based prospective cohort study among 5675 children. Information about breastfeeding was collected by questionnaires. At age 6 years, we measured interrupter resistance (Rint) and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO

The Effectiveness of Group Assertiveness Training on Happiness in Rural Adolescent Females With Substance Abusing Parents.

BACKGROUND: Parental substance abuse confronts children with a variety of psychological, social, and behavioral problems. Children of substance abusing parents show higher levels of psychiatric disorders including anxiety and depression and exert lower levels of communication skills. Weak social skills in this group of adolescents put them at a higher risk for substance abuse. Many studies showed school based interventions such as life skill training can effective on future substance abusing in these high risk adolescences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The participants consisted of 57 middles schoo
