During the last decades of the previous century, school desks with a tilt top have disappeared. The chairs have been designed for sitting upright, with the hip, knees and ankles all at right angles. However, the erect posture cannot be maintained for more than one or two minutes, after which it will result in fatigue, discomfort or poor posture. The main aim of project is to identify the type of furniture that most effectively contribute to adequate neck and back postures of the school children, by carrying out a postural analysis of a sample of school pupils when using three different types o…

Children with haemophilia often bleed inside joints and muscles, which may impair postural adjustments. These postural adjustments are necessary to control postural balance during daily activities. The inability to quickly recover postural balance could elevate the risk of bleeding. To determine whether children with haemophilia have impaired postural adjustment after an unexpected perturbation compared with healthy children. Twenty children with haemophilia comprised the haemophilic group (HG), and 20 healthy, age-paired children comprised the control group (CG). Subjects stood on a force pla

We present a case of postural hypoxemia with a final diagnosis of myasthenia gravis (MG). A 62-year-old man experienced double vision in his left eye from December 2008 and received a diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy. From mid-December he began to experience breathing difficulties at night when in a supine position and was admitted to our hospital. Bilateral diaphragmatic elevation was observed on a chest X-ray film, and lower lung atelectasis and an anterior mediastinal tumor were observed on chest CT. However, his breathing difficulties only occurred when he was in a supine position. Therefo

The purpose of this study was to examine the postural control in children with strabismus before and after eye surgery. Control of posture is a complex multi-sensorial process relying on visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems. Reduced influence of one of such systems leads to postural adaptation due to a compensation of one of the other systems [3]. Nine children with strabismus (4-8 years old) participated in the study. Ophthalmologic, orthoptic, vestibular and postural tests were done before and twice (2 and 8 weeks) after eye surgery. Postural stability was measured by a platform (Te…

BACKGROUND: A subgroup of patients suffering from Lyme disease (LD) may initially respond to antibiotics only to later develop a syndrome of fatigue, joint pain and cognitive dysfunction referred to as 'post treatment LD syndrome'. We report on a series of patients who developed autonomic dysfunction in the form of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
METHODS: All of the patients in this report had suffered from LD in the past and were successfully treated with antibiotics. All patients were apparently well, until years later when they presented with fatigue, cognitive dysfunctio

The aim of this study was to check the combined and/or dissociated influences of time-of-day and sleep deprivation on postural control. Twenty subjects participated in test sessions which took place at 6:00 am, 10:00 am, 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm either after a normal night's sleep or after a night of total sleep deprivation. Postural control was evaluated by COP surface area, LFS ratio and Romberg's index. The results showed that postural control fluctuates diurnally according to three different periods, pronounced by sleep deprivation: (1) at 6:00 am, there was no modification by sleep deprivation

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder characterized by postural tachycardia in combination with orthostatic symptoms without associated hypotension. Symptoms include light-headedness, palpitations, fatigue, confusion, and anxiety, which are brought on by assuming the upright position and usually relieved by sitting or lying down. Given the associated autonomic dysfunction that occurs with POTS, various perioperative concerns must be considered when providing anesthetic care for such patients. We present an adolescent with POTS who required anesthetic care during poster

UNLABELLED: Mouth-breathing children have changes in their stomatognathic system, which result in head projection, stress increase in the scapular belt muscles and postural adaptations. Although thoracic shape and posture can influence ventilatory dynamics, we didn't find studies addressing pulmonary function of mouth-breathing children.
AIMS: this study aimed at analyzing the posture of mouth-breathing children, and studying the existence of correlations between posture and pulmonary volumes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: prospective, observational and cross-sectional study, where the posture and p…

BACKGROUND: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) occurs more commonly in women than in men and often affects women of childbearing age. Many of these women wish to have children, yet there are little reported data on the outcomes of pregnancy in patients with POTS. To date there has been one report of two patients with POTS who successfully completed pregnancy. We report the outcomes of 22 women with preexisting POTS who became pregnant.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the outcome of pregnancy in patients with preexisting POTS.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-two patients, age 30 +/- 7 years, w

OBJECTIVES: Patients with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) often appear anxious and report inattention. Patients with POTS were formally assessed for psychiatric disorders and inattention and compared with patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and control subjects.
METHODS: Patients with POTS (n = 21), ADHD (n = 18) and normal control subjects (n = 20) were assessed for DSM-IV psychiatric disorders and completed a battery of questionnaires that assessed depression, anxiety and ADHD characteristics.
RESULTS: Patients with POTS did not have an increased prevalence o

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypotheses that (a) participants might develop motion sickness while playing "off-the-shelf" console video games and (b) postural motion would differ between sick and well participants, prior to the onset of motion sickness.
BACKGROUND: There have been many anecdotal reports of motion sickness among people who play console video games (e.g., Xbox, PlayStation).
METHOD: Participants (40 undergraduate students) played a game continuously for up to 50 min while standing or sitting. We varied the distance to the display screen (and, consequently, the visual angle of the

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) of the thalamus improves essential tremor. Suppression of the amplitude of the postural tremor component with VIM DBS depends on stimulation frequency. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of DBS frequency on the intention tremor component, that is, tremor that is enhanced by target-directed movement, and to compare it to the effect of DBS frequency on postural tremor in people with essential tremor. We measured tremor frequency and amplitude during trials of postural holding and voluntary reaching between

Enhanced sympathetic activity causes an exaggerated heart rate response to standing in the postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS). All patients describe symptoms of orthostatic intolerance such as dizziness, blurred vision, shortness of breath, palpitations, tremulousness, chest discomfort, headache, lightheadedness and nausea, but only one third suffer loss of consciousness. We report four patients with POTS, who had long ventricular pauses (i.e. asystole) and syncope during head-up tilt test. This suggests that a subset of patients with POTS can have a surge in parasympathetic outflow that pre

OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal hormone therapy (HT) results in more substantial reductions in the risk of hip fracture when initiated sooner rather than later after menopause. We studied the effects of postmenopausal HT on the postural balance of postmenopausal women, with further assessment according to the time since they achieved menopause.
DESIGN: One hundred women with a mean age of 52.5 years (91 evaluable) were randomly and blindly assigned to either a sequential estradiol-norethisterone acetate regimen or placebo for 3 months, after which all participants received open HT for a further 3 m

Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), characterized by orthostatic tachycardia in the absence of orthostatic hypotension, has been the focus of increasing clinical interest over the last 15 years 1. Patients with POTS complain of symptoms of tachycardia, exercise intolerance, lightheadedness, extreme fatigue, headache and mental clouding. Patients with POTS demonstrate a heart rate increase of >or=30 bpm with prolonged standing (5-30 minutes), often have high levels of upright plasma norepinephrine (reflecting sympathetic nervous system activation), and many patients have a low blood volume. We investigated how vestibular information is used to maintain posture and control movement by studying vestibularly deficient mice (IsK-/- mutant). In these mutants, microscopy showed degeneration of the cristae of the semicircular canals and of the maculae of the utriculi and sacculi, while behavioural and vestibulo-ocular reflex testing showed that vestibular function was completely absent. However, the histology of Scarpa's ganglia and the vestibular nerves was normal in mutant mice, indicating the presence of intact central pathways. Using X-ray and high-speed cineradiography, we compared…

Phobic postural vertigo (PPV) is the second most common diagnosis on a dizziness unit. It is a somatoform syndrome characterized as a chronic and incapacitating condition with subjective imbalance and short attacks of dizziness. During a period of 18 months, PPV was observed in 41 patients among 251 of a dizziness unit. Twenty-six had primary PPV, among whom 65% had depressive or anxiety disorders, and 15 patients were diagnosed at secondary PPV. Normal neurological examination and diagnostic tests were observed in most cases. A favorable response to treatment (antidepressants, benzodiazepines
