Multicentre development and validation of a risk model integrating immunotherapy and coagulation biomarkers for thrombosis in autoimmune neurological disorders.

PURPOSE: Patients with Autoimmune Neurological Disorders (ANDs) require routine immunomodulatory therapy, which inherently increases thrombosis risk. Despite this recognised association, reliable tools for thrombosis prediction remain limited, highlighting the need for accurate risk stratification to inform targeted prevention strategies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This multicentre retrospective study developed a machine learning-based thrombosis risk prediction model using data from 786 patients with ANDs receiving immunomodulatory therapy. The model was trained on data from three centres and ext

Comparison of intracranial pressure prediction in hydrocephalus patients among linear, non-linear, and machine learning regression models in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Hydrocephalus (HCP) is one of the most significant concerns in neurosurgical patients because it can cause increased intracranial pressure (ICP), resulting in mortality and morbidity. To date, machine learning (ML) has been helpful in predicting continuous outcomes. The primary objective of the present study was to identify the factors correlated with ICP, while the secondary objective was to compare the predictive performances among linear, non-linear, and ML regression models for ICP prediction. METHODS: A total of 412 patients with various types of HCP who had undergone ventric

In-hospital risk stratification algorithm of Asian elderly patients.

Limited research has been conducted in Asian elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) for in-hospital mortality prediction after an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) using Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML). We used DL and ML to predict in-hospital mortality in Asian elderly STEMI patients and compared it to a conventional risk score for myocardial infraction outcomes. Malaysia's National Cardiovascular Disease Registry comprises an ethnically diverse Asian elderly population (3991 patients). 50 variables helped in establishing the in-hospital death prediction mode

Detecting dengue fever in children using online Rasch analysis to develop algorithms for parents: An APP development and usability study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever (DF) is a significant public health concern in Asia. However, detecting the disease using traditional dichotomous criteria (i.e., absent vs present) can be extremely difficult. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and artificial neural networks (ANNs), due to their use of a large number of parameters for modeling, have shown the potential to improve prediction accuracy (ACC). To date, there has been no research conducted to understand item features and responses using online Rasch analysis. To verify the hypothesis that a combination of CNN, ANN, K-nearest-neighbor alg

Machine learning-based prediction of ventilator therapeutic pressure for optimized CPAP titration.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of therapeutic pressure for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy is essential for effective treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Existing methods often rely on complex sleep-related parameters and small sample sizes, limiting their generalizability. This study aims to develop a more accessible, data-driven model using readily available demographic and physiological variables to predict CPAP pressure, improving both accuracy and scalability. METHODS: We employed a machine learning approach, integrating decision trees, gradient boosting algor

In Silico Prediction of BRCA1 and BRCA2 Variants with Conflicting Clinical Interpretation in a Cohort of Breast Cancer Patients.

Germline BRCA1/2 alteration has been linked to an increased risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndromes. As a result, genetic testing, based on NGS, allows us to identify a high number of variants of uncertain significance (VUS) or conflicting interpretation of pathogenicity (CIP) variants. The identification of CIP/VUS is often considered inconclusive and clinically not actionable for the patients' and unaffected carriers' management. In this context, their assessment and classification remain a significant challenge. The aim of the study was to investigate whether the in silico pr

Assessing the external validity of algorithms to estimate EQ-5D-3L from the WOMAC.

BACKGROUND: The use of mapping algorithms have been suggested as a solution to predict health utilities when no preference-based measure is included in the study. However, validity and predictive performance of these algorithms are highly variable and hence assessing the accuracy and validity of algorithms before use them in a new setting is of importance. The aim of the current study was to assess the predictive accuracy of three mapping algorithms to estimate the EQ-5D-3L from the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) among Swedish people with knee disorders.

Enhancing Alzheimer's disease prediction using random forest: A novel framework combining backward feature elimination and ant colony optimization.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a significant global health challenge due to its increasing prevalence and the limitations of current diagnostic approaches. Early detection is crucial as pathological changes occur 10-15 years before clinical symptoms manifest, yet current diagnostic methods typically identify the disease at moderate to advanced stages. Machine learning techniques offer promising solutions for early prediction, but face challenges related to feature selection and hyperparameter optimization. OBJECTIVE: To develop an enhanced predictive model for Alzheimer's dis

Validation and performance of a machine-learning derived prediction guide for total knee arthroplasty component sizing.

INTRODUCTION: Anticipation of patient-specific component sizes prior to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is essential to avoid excessive cost associated with additional surgical trays and morbidity associated with imperfect sizing. Current methods of size prediction, including templating, are inconsistent and time-consuming. Machine learning (ML) algorithms may allow for accurate TKA component size prediction with the ability to make predictions in real-time. METHODS: Consecutive patients receiving primary TKA between 2012 and 2020 from two large tertiary academic and six community hospitals wer
