Retrolaminar Demyelination of Structurally Intact Axons in Nonhuman Primate Experimental Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To determine if structurally intact, retrolaminar optic nerve (RON) axons are demyelinated in nonhuman primate (NHP) experimental glaucoma (EG). METHODS: Unilateral EG NHPs (n = 3) were perfusion fixed, EG and control eyes were enucleated, and foveal Bruch's membrane opening (FoBMO) 30° sectoral axon counts were estimated. Optic nerve heads were trephined; serial vibratome sections (VSs) were imaged and colocalized to a fundus photograph establishing their FoBMO location. The peripheral neural canal region within n = 5 EG versus control eye VS comparisons was targeted for scanning bl

Evolution of Epiglottis and Preepiglottic Space of Primate Larynx as the Vocal Tract Is Acquired.

OBJECTIVES: Comparative histoanatomy regarding the evolution of epiglottis and preepiglottic space (PES) of primate larynx as the supralaryngeal vocal tract (SVT) is acquired was investigated. METHODS: Two lemur, one galago, two macaque, two gorilla, and two chimpanzee normal larynges were investigated and compared with human larynges using the whole-organ serial section technique. RESULTS: Nonhuman primates with the limited pharyngeal space of SVT (lemurs, galago, and macaques, phyletic distant relative of humans) did not have PES. Their epiglottis was composed of cartilage that is not very…

Wide-field OCT angiography for non-human primate retinal imaging.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a well-established research tool for vision research in animal models capable of providing in vivo imaging of the retina. Structural OCT can be enhanced using OCT angiography (OCTA) processing in order to provide simultaneously acquired, automatically co-registered vascular information. Currently available OCT. Currently available OCTA lack either large field of view or high resolution. In this study we developed a wide-field (60-degree), high-resolution (10.5-µm optical transverse) and high-sensitivity (104-dB) OCTA-enabled system for non-human primate im

Primate superior colliculus is causally engaged in abstract higher-order cognition.

The superior colliculus is an evolutionarily conserved midbrain region that is thought to mediate spatial orienting, including saccadic eye movements and covert spatial attention. Here, we reveal a role for the superior colliculus in higher-order cognition, independent of its role in spatial orienting. We trained rhesus macaques to perform an abstract visual categorization task that involved neither instructed eye movements nor differences in covert attention. We compared neural activity in the superior colliculus and the posterior parietal cortex, a region previously shown to causally contrib

Linking energy availability, movement and sociality in a wild primate (Papio ursinus).

Proximate mechanisms of 'social ageing', i.e. shifts in social activity and narrowing of social networks, are understudied. It is proposed that energetic deficiencies (which are often seen in older individuals) may restrict movement and, in turn, sociality, but empirical tests of these intermediary mechanisms are lacking. Here, we study wild chacma baboons (Papio ursinus), combining measures of faecal triiodothyronine (fT3), a non-invasive proxy for energy availability, high-resolution GPS data (movement and social proximity) and accelerometry (social grooming durations). Higher (individual me

A prominent vertical occipital white matter fasciculus unique to primate brains.

Vision in humans and other primates enlists parallel processing streams in the dorsal and ventral visual cortex, known to support spatial and object processing, respectively. These streams are bridged, however, by a prominent white matter tract, the vertical occipital fasciculus (VOF), identified in both classical neuroanatomy and recent diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) studies. Understanding the evolution of the VOF may shed light on its origin, function, and role in visually guided behaviors. To this end, we acquired high-resolution dMRI data from the brains of select mam…

High-dimensional topographic organization of visual features in the primate temporal lobe.

The inferotemporal cortex supports our supreme object recognition ability. Numerous studies have been conducted to elucidate the functional organization of this brain area, but there are still important questions that remain unanswered, including how this organization differs between humans and non-human primates. Here, we use deep neural networks trained on object categorization to construct a 25-dimensional space of visual features, and systematically measure the spatial organization of feature preference in both male monkey brains and human brains using fMRI. These feature maps allow us to …

Hurricanes affect diversification among individual life courses of a primate population.

Extreme climatic events may influence individual-level variability in phenotypes, survival and reproduction, and thereby drive the pace of evolution. Climate models predict increases in the frequency of intense hurricanes, but no study has measured their impact on individual life courses within animal populations. We used 45 years of demographic data of rhesus macaques to quantify the influence of major hurricanes on reproductive life courses using multiple metrics of dynamic heterogeneity accounting for life course variability and life-history trait variances. To reduce intraspecific competit

Progressive neuronal plasticity in primate visual cortex during stimulus familiarization.

The primate brain is equipped to learn and remember newly encountered visual stimuli such as faces and objects. In the macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex, neurons mark the familiarity of a visual stimulus through response modification, often involving a decrease in spiking rate. Here, we investigate the emergence of this neural plasticity by longitudinally tracking IT neurons during several weeks of familiarization with face images. We found that most neurons in the anterior medial (AM) face patch exhibited a gradual decline in their late-phase visual responses to multiple stimuli. Individu

Activation of primate frontal eye fields with a CMUT phased array system.

BACKGROUND: There are pushes toward non-invasive stimulation of neural tissues to prevent issues that arise from invasive brain recordings and stimulation. Transcranial Focused Ultrasound (TFUS) has been examined as a way to stimulate non-invasively, but previous studies have limitations in the application of TFUS. As a result, refinement is needed to improve stimulation results. NEW METHOD: We utilized a custom-built capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) that would send ultrasonic waves through skin and skull to targets located in the Frontal Eye Fields (FEF) region triangula

Lovastatin promotes the self-renewal of murine and primate spermatogonial stem cells.

The spermatogonial stem cell (SSC) niche is critical for SSC maintenance and subsequent spermatogenesis. Numerous reproductive hazards impair the SSC niche, thereby resulting in aberrant SSC self-renewal and male infertility. However, promising agents targeting the impaired SSC niche to promote SSC self-renewal are still limited. Here, we screen out and assess the effects of Lovastatin on the self-renewal of mouse SSCs (mSSCs). Mechanistically, Lovastatin promotes the self-renewal of mSSCs and inhibits its inflammation and apoptosis through the regulation of isoprenoid intermediates. Remarkabl

Research progress of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in nonhuman primate models.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is one of the important complications of neonatal asphyxia, which not only leads to neurological disability but also seriously threatens the life of neonates. Over the years, animal models of HIE have been a research hotspot to find ways to cope with HIE and thereby reduce the risk of neonatal death or disability in moderate-to-severe HIE. By reviewing the literature related to HIE over the years, it was found that nonhuman primates share a high degree of homology with human gross neural anatomy. The basic data on nonhuman primates are not yet com…

Testing the reliability of the rearticulation of osteological primate pelves in comparative morphological studies.

The evolution of human pelvic form is primarily studied using disarticulated osteological material of living and fossil primates that need rearticulation to approximate anatomical position. To test whether this technique introduces errors that impact biological signals, virtual rearticulations of the pelvis in anatomical position from computed tomography scans were compared with rearticulated models from the same individuals for one female and one male of Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Macaca mulatta, Lepilemur mustelinus, Galago senegalensis, and Nycticebus pygmaeus. Comparative morphology and physiology of the vocal production apparatus and the brain in the extant primates.

Objective data mainly from the comparative anatomy of various organs related to human speech and language is considered to unearth clues about the mechanisms behind language development. The two organs of the larynx and hyoid bone are considered to have evolved towards suitable positions and forms in preparation for the occurrence of the large repertoire of vocalization necessary for human speech. However, some researchers have asserted that there is no significant difference of these organs between humans and non-human primates. Speech production is dependent on the voluntary control of the r…

Cytology, architecture, development, and connections of the primate striatum: Hints for human pathology.

Degeneration of neurons and circuits across the striatum shows stereotyped time-course and spatial topography patterns that are distinct for Huntington's disease, Parkinson's disease, or the Tauopathies. These patterns of neurodegeneration in humans have not yet been systematically related to developmental, connectional, cellular, and chemical factors studied in human and non-human primates, that may underlie potential differences in selective vulnerability across striatal sectors. Relating primate anatomy to human pathology could provide new venues for identifying molecular, cellular, and con…

A deep neural network model of the primate superior colliculus for emotion recognition.

Although sensory processing is pivotal to nearly every theory of emotion, the evaluation of the visual input as 'emotional' (e.g. a smile as signalling happiness) has been traditionally assumed to take place in supramodal 'limbic' brain regions. Accordingly, subcortical structures of ancient evolutionary origin that receive direct input from the retina, such as the superior colliculus (SC), are traditionally conceptualized as passive relay centres. However, mounting evidence suggests that the SC is endowed with the necessary infrastructure and computational capabilities for the innate recognit

Primate extrastriate cortical area MST: a gateway between sensation and cognition.

Primate visual cortex consists of dozens of distinct brain areas, each providing a highly specialized component to the sophisticated task of encoding the incoming sensory information and creating a representation of our visual environment that underlies our perception and action. One such area is the medial superior temporal cortex (MST), a motion-sensitive, direction-selective part of the primate visual cortex. It receives most of its input from the middle temporal (MT) area, but MST cells have larger receptive fields and respond to more complex motion patterns. The finding that MST cells are

Encoding of Partially Occluded and Occluding Objects in Primate Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Object segmentation-the process of parsing visual scenes-is essential for object recognition and scene understanding. We investigated how responses of neurons in macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex contribute to object segmentation under partial occlusion. Specifically, we asked whether IT responses to occluding and occluded objects are bound together as in the visual image or linearly separable reflecting their segmentation. We recorded the activity of 121 IT neurons while two male animals performed a shape discrimination task under partial occlusion. We found that for a majority (60%) of n

The superior parietal lobule of primates: a sensory-motor hub for interaction with the environment.

The superior parietal lobule of the macaque monkey occupies the postero-medial part of the parietal lobe and plays a crucial role in the integration of different sources of information (from visual, motor and somatosensory brain regions) for the purpose of high-level cognitive functions, as perception for action. This region encompasses the intraparietal sulcus and the parieto-occipital sulcus and includes also the precuneate cortex in the mesial surface of the hemisphere. It hosts several areas extensively studied in the macaque: PE, PEip, PEci anteriorly and PEc, MIP, PGm and V6A posteriorly

Temporal Prediction Signals for Periodic Sensory Events in the Primate Central Thalamus.

Prediction of periodic event timing is an important function for everyday activities, while the exact neural mechanism remains unclear. Previous studies in nonhuman primates have demonstrated that neurons in the cerebellar dentate nucleus and those in the caudate nucleus exhibit periodic firing modulation when the animals attempt to detect a single omission of isochronous repetitive audiovisual stimuli. To understand how these subcortical signals are sent and processed through the thalamocortical pathways, we examined single-neuron activities in the central thalamus of two macaque monkeys (one…
