An evaluation of antecedent exercise on behavior maintained by automatic reinforcement using a three-component multiple schedule.

We evaluated antecedent exercise for treating the automatically reinforced problem behavior of 4 individuals with autism. We conducted preference assessments to identify leisure and exercise items that were associated with high levels of engagement and low levels of problem behavior. Next, we conducted three 3-component multiple-schedule sequences: an antecedent-exercise test sequence, a noncontingent leisure-item control sequence, and a social-interaction control sequence. Within each sequence, we used a 3-component multiple schedule to evaluate preintervention, intervention, and postinterven…

Predictors of co-occurring risk behavior trajectories among economically disadvantaged African-American youth: contextual and individual factors.

PURPOSE: African-American youth, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, evidence high rates of negative outcomes associated with three problem behaviors, conduct problems, risky sexual behavior, and substance use. This study used a contextually tailored version of problem behavior theory (PBT) to examine predictors of the simultaneous development of problem behaviors in this specific cultural group. METHODS: Sociocontextual and individual variables representing four PBT predictor categories, controls protection, support protection, models risk, and vulnerability risk, were examined a…

Does Leader AI-Focused Attention Promote Employee Proactivity? A Work-Related Rumination Theory Perspective.

With the increasing embeddedness of AI robots and other intelligent technologies in organizational workplaces, leader AI-focused attention has emerged as an important reference point for employees as they use and adapt to AI-related technologies. Drawing on work-related rumination theory, this study develops and tests an integrated mediation model to examine how leader AI-focused attention is related to employee proactive behavior through two parallel pathways: problem-solving pondering and affective rumination. It further investigates the moderating role of AI job role clarity. Based on struc

The Efficacy of Technology-Enhanced Behavioral Parent Training for Families With Low Income: Do Parent-Centered Profiles Moderate Treatment Outcomes?

Behavior disorders (BDs) in children are common and have long-term impacts. Financially disadvantaged families are at a greater risk of havi … es by group for positive and negative parenting, as well as child behavior intensity, but not child problem behavior. The heterogeneity of responses to standard relative to TE treatment models among underserved families may provide clues regarding the future personalization of BPT toward improved treatment efficacy.

Problem behaviour in adolescent boys with fragile X syndrome: relative prevalence, frequency and severity.

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of boys with fragile X syndrome (FXS), the most common known inherited form of intellectual disability (ID), exhibit problem behaviours (e.g. aggression, self-injury, property destruction and stereotypy) that can negatively impact the health and safety of others as well as the individual concerned. However, data are limited concerning the relative prevalence, frequency and severity of problem behaviours exhibited by boys with FXS compared with those by boys with mixed-aetiology ID who also exhibit problem behaviours. METHOD: As part of a larger study on problem

First passage time analysis of animal movement and insights into the functional response.

Movement plays a role in structuring the interactions between individuals, their environment, and other species. Although movement models coupled with empirical data are widely used to study animal distribution, they have seldom been used to study search time. This paper proposes first passage time as a novel approach for understanding the effect of the landscape on animal movement and search time. In the context of animal movement, first passage time is the time taken for an animal to reach a specified site for the first time. We synthesize current first passage time theory and derive a gener

Behavioral cues that great apes use to forage for hidden food.

We conducted three studies to examine whether the four great ape species (chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans) are able to use behavioral experimenter-given cues in an object-choice task. In the subsequent experimental conditions subjects were presented with two eggs, one of which contained food and the other did not. In Study 1 the experimenter examined both eggs by smelling or shaking them, but only made a failed attempt to open (via biting) the egg containing food. In a control condition, the experimenter examined and attempted to open both eggs, but in reverse order to control f

The RFP-C Triangle of Conflict: Listening to Countertransference Helps Listening to Children With Disruptive Behaviors.

Countertransference is universal in the treatment of children with disruptive behaviors. Clinicians must be aware of their countertransference in order to use those feelings as therapeutically as possible. Understanding their countertransference can help clinicians understand and address the defensive aspects of disruptive behaviors that protect children from consciously experiencing painful emotions. Regulation-focused psychotherapy for children (RFP-C), the first manualized psychodynamic treatment for children with disruptive behaviors, uses the RFP-C triangle of conflict as a heuristic to h

Delayed Diagnosis of Painless Thyroiditis in an Adolescent Presenting with Aggression and Disruptive Behavior Initially Attributed to Worsening of a Psychiatric Disorder.

Painless thyroiditis, which is rare in children, exhibits the characteristic sequence of hyperthyroidism, including aggressive and disruptive behaviors. Unlike subacute thyroiditis or Graves' disease, painless thyroiditis is challenging to diagnose because of its mild symptoms and minimal or absent physical findings. Moreover, aggressive and disruptive behaviors in children with psychiatric disorders may be misconstrued as exacerbation of underlying symptoms. The present patient was a 16-year-old male with adjustment disorder who presented to a pediatric psychiatric clinic for assessment of ir

Psychopathic Traits and Parental Practices in Greek-Cypriot Community and Dutch Clinical Referred Samples.

Parental practices are associated with psychopathic traits across several developmental stages. However, the majority of available studies focused mainly on the affective dimension of psychopathy, namely callous-unemotional traits, disregarding the grandiose-deceitful and impulsivity-need for stimulation dimensions. The current study examines the distinct associations between all three dimensions with parental practices (parental involvement, poor monitoring, inconsistent discipline, and corporal punishment) after considering the effect of conduct problems (CPs) and sex in a Greek-Cypriot prim

Callous-Unemotional Traits in Adolescents' Daily Life: Associations with Affect and Emotional and Conduct Problems.

Intensive longitudinal methods (e.g., daily diary) inform understanding of dynamic processes by parsing within-person state-like fluctuations from stable between-person trait-like differences. In this exploratory study, we investigated whether self-reported callous-unemotional (CU) traits (callousness, uncaring) demonstrated daily fluctuations, as well as whether daily CU traits were associated with multiple forms of daily emotional and behavioral functioning. A sample of 99 adolescents (55.8% female; Mage = 14.60 years) provided baseline information and completed a naturalistic 30-day diary r

Relationships between dynamic risk factors for externalising problem behaviour and group climate in adults with mild intellectual disability in forensic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Relationships between dynamic risk factors for externalising problem behaviour and group climate were investigated in 151 adult in-patients with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning in a Dutch secure residential facility. METHOD: Regression analysis was used to predict total group climate score and Support, Growth, Repression, and Atmosphere subscales of the 'Group Climate Inventory'. Predictor variables were Coping Skills, Attitude towards current treatment, Hostility, and Criminogenic attitudes subscales of the 'Dynamic Risk Outcome Scales'. RESUL

Parenting Interventions Targeting Behavior for Children Born Preterm or Low Birth Weight: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and summarize the outcomes of parenting interventions designed to improve child and/or parenting behavior for children born preterm and/or low birth weight (LBW). METHODS: We conducted systematic searches of Embase, Scopus, PubMed, PsycInfo, and CINAHL in September 2021. We identified articles published at any time that describe the outcomes of parenting interventions targeting the child and/or parenting behavior of children born preterm/LBW and their caregivers. Two independent raters assessed the risk of bias using the Revised Cochrane Risk-of-Bias Tool.

Different whole-brain functional connectivity correlates of reactive-proactive aggression and callous-unemotional traits in children and adolescents with disruptive behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Disruptive behavior in children and adolescents can manifest as reactive aggression and proactive aggression and is modulated by callous-unemotional traits and other comorbidities. Neural correlates of these aggression dimensions or subtypes and comorbid symptoms remain largely unknown. This multi-center study investigated the relationship between resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) and aggression subtypes considering comorbidities. METHODS: The large sample of children and adolescents aged 8-18 years (n = 207; mean age = 13.30±2.60 years, 150 males) included 118 cases wi

Psychopathy and heart rate variability: A new physiological marker for the adaptive features of boldness.

The boldness disposition of the triarchic model of psychopathy is theorized to entail, aside from mal-adaptive proclivities (narcissism, fearless risk-taking), some adaptive features (e.g., immunity to stressful events, high self-esteem, and emotional resilience) that seem to predispose high boldness individuals to an effective emotional regulation in response to environmental demands. The high frequency band of heart rate variability -an index of parasympathetic cardiac vagal activity-is a well-validated physiological index of emotional self-regulation and mental health resilience. The aim of

Prediction of serious misconduct in law enforcement officers.

This study compared 143 law enforcement officers with a history of serious misconduct and 429 matched comparators who had completed the Candidate and Officer Personnel Survey-Revised (COPS-R), an inventory developed specifically for psychological evaluation of public safety candidates. Most had also completed the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), which allowed for scoring of scales and indices from the PAI Police and Public Safety Report (PAI-PPSR), as well as the recently developed PAI-Plus. Correlations and t tests indicated significant small group differences on seven COPS-R scales an

Inhibitory deficits and symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: How are they related to effortful control?

Separate studies with clinical and community-based samples have identified an association between symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and inhibitory control deficits and ADHD and weak effortful control. We tested whether differences in effortful control explained the associations between ADHD symptoms and inhibitory control deficits, controlling for conduct problems. In a community sample, parents rated ADHD symptoms, conduct problems, effortful control, surgency and negative affect in 77 4-7-year-olds (47 girls), who performed an inhibitory control task. ADHD symptoms,

The Effects of a Caregiver Implemented Toilet Training Package.

Toileting skills are a milestone typically achieved by the age of four. For many caregivers, particularly those who have children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities, teaching toileting is a challenge resulting in delayed implementation. Delaying toileting increases the risk of challenges to acquiring this skill. Caregivers are fundamental and research shows that their involvement supports the maintenance and sustainability of this skill. Four caregivers were taught a 24-step toilet training program to teach toileting. Behaviors measured included urinati
