Physician associates in primary health care in England: A challenge to professional boundaries?

Like other health care systems, the National Health Service (NHS) in England has looked to new staffing configurations faced with medical staff shortages and rising costs. One solution has been to employ physician associates (PAs). PAs are trained in the medical model to assess, diagnose and commence treatment under the supervision of a physician. This paper explores the perceived effects on professional boundaries and relationships of introducing this completely new professional group. It draws on data from a study, completed in 2014, which examined the contribution of PAs working in general

A strategic framework for pathology faculty onboarding.

Effective oversight of talent acquisition, integration, management, and retention in an academic pathology department is critical to sustaining its tripartite mission of clinical service, research, and education. Despite substantial focus on these areas, the crucial initial transition and onboarding period for new faculty is often treated as an afterthought. Substantial evidence shows that well-structured onboarding programs boost productivity, satisfaction, and retention. Yet, a 2024 Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment report found that just over half of physicians an

Emerging issues for the professions in the 1990s.

Responses to the 1990 Omnibus Survey give information about how ASHA members will fare in the coming decade. In a period when employment stability and educational preparation are important issues, ASHA members enjoy a great deal of employment stability and think they have received adequate educational preparation. However, because nearly one third of ASHA members work in private practice, many may be responsible for purchasing their own health insurance and, therefore, may be particularly concerned with soaring medical costs in the future. As our way of life changes, ASHA members change with i

A Consensus Study on the Competencies of Nurse Specialists Providing Care for Craniofacial and Cleft Lip and Palate Patients.

Currently, it is unclear which tasks and competencies nurse specialists provide within the European Reference Network for Craniofacial Anomalies and Ear, Nose, Throat Disorders (ERN CRANIO). This study aims to establish an expert consensus on the needed competencies for this nursing role. A narrative literature search on the role of nurses within cleft and craniofacial care was conducted. Statements on competencies and tasks were formed based on literature and expert opinion and categorized according to the Canadian Medical Education Directives for Specialists roles. A Delphi consensus process

Communicating in Palliative Care for Neurodegenerative Diseases: A Qualitative Study on Professional-Family Interactions.

Background/Objectives: In Palliative Care (PC), the communication is an essential aspect of care becoming particularly significant at the end-of-life. In neurodegenerative diseases, communication involves additional complexity due to prolonged disease trajectories, early cognitive decline, and frequent loss of decision-making capacity. The aim of this study was to explore PC healthcare professionals' experiences with communication process and relational dynamics involving families of patients with advanced and terminal neurogenerative disease. Methods: The study design was qualitative, using s

Currently, there is a paucity of literature on the epidemiology of knee injuries in professional male rugby league players. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records from a single male professional rugby league team (Newcastle Knights), competing in Australia, and evaluated knee injuries and time to return to play. RESULTS: In total, 89 knee injuries occurred, with an injury incidence of 61

Perceived Skill and Willingness to Address Child Sexual Abuse: Assessing Serbian and Montenegrin Pediatricians.

Most research on pediatricians' reporting of child sexual abuse (CSA) is based in western countries. Only recently have studies focused on low-income countries. We are the first to survey pediatricians in Serbia and Montenegro on their encounters, competence and beliefs regarding CSA. Pediatricians in Serbia (n = 358) were recruited during a professional conference; pediatricians in Montenegro (n = 121) were sent an online survey. Demographic information was not obtained. Frequencies and percentages were calculated. A quarter of pediatricians in both countries felt competent detecting medical

A Qualitative Assessment of Interprofessional Knowledge Gaps in the Setting of Child Physical Abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Health care professionals can protect children by identifying and reporting injuries concerning for child physical abuse, such as sentinel injuries (bruising and intra-oral injuries in precruising infants). Citing knowledge and collaboration barriers, health care professionals sometimes fail to recognize sentinel injuries as concerning for abuse. Interprofessional education may be an ideal format to improve health care professional's responses to sentinel injuries. However, it is traditionally limited to health care professions, while responding to suspected child physical abuse

Nurses' learning curves for ultrasound assessment of gastric content: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Gastric point-of-care ultrasonography (G-POCUS) is a novel non-invasive technique for bedside assessment of gastric content that can be performed by non-radiologic healthcare professionals, including nurses. Real-time insight into the gastric content may facilitate objective decision-making during postoperative care, such as the placement or removal of nasogastric tubes or the initiation and progression of enteral feeding. To innovate this essential aspect of nursing care, thorough implementation of G-POCUS through education is required. However, the literature remains inconclusive

Principles for Responsible AI in Health Professions Education, Research, and Care: Health CARE-AI (Contextual, Accountable, Responsible, and Equitable Artificial Intelligence) Framework Delphi Consensus Study.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly integrating into health professions education and clinical practice, creating significant opportunities alongside new ethical challenges. Although current international and professional guidance establishes essential values, it offers limited direction for how clinicians, educators, learners, and institutions should act in routine educational, research, and clinical contexts. The CARE-AI (Contextual, Accountable, Responsible, and Equitable Artificial Intelligence) project responds to this practice-level gap by articulating guidance that moves
