Postoperative biliary stasis is a common state before the onset of postoperative acute cholecystitis. In order to study its characteristics and methods of prophylaxis, we examined the frequency of biliary stasis and postoperative recovery of gallbladder contractility ultrasonographically from the 2nd to the 28th postoperative day in 43 esophagectomy cases. Thirty women who sought treatment at an eating disorders clinic in a general hospital and were diagnosed as having a current episode of bulimia nervosa were followed prospectively to assess the course of eating behaviors and other psychopathology. At intake, all 30 met DSM-III criteria for bulimia nervosa, and 57% met Research Diagnostic Criteria for an affective disorder. Over a 2 1/2-year period, 34 patients underwent therapeutic external ventricular drainage with a valve-regulated system. The mean duration of drainage was 16 days. There was no incidence of ventricular infection, nor was there blockage of the ventricular catheter requiring revision. Eventually, 13 patients required ventriculoperitoneal shunts. All survivors remained free from complications after more than 6 months of follow-up. The system proved safe and reliable in patients requiring prolonged ventricular drainage.

The clinical pattern of 400 cases of brucellosis in Kuwait is presented. The disease was acute in 77 per cent, sub-acute in 12.5 per cent and chronic in 10.5 per cent of cases. Raw milk was the major source of infection. The major features on presentation, irrespective of the course of the disease, were fever, sweating, headache, rigors, arthralgia, myalgia, and low back pain. Hepatosplenomegaly was present in 41 per cent of cases and in 32 per cent neither liver nor spleen were palpable. The haematologic findings were not specific and hepatic dysfunction (shown by liver enzyme abnormalities)

To assess the functional results of treatment of faecal incontinence we carried out physiological and radiological measurements in 46 patients and 20 controls. Twenty patients were selected for conservative treatment and 26 for surgery (including 17 postanal repairs and 6 anterior sphincter repairs). Screening of 153 Hispanic children attending a Hospital-based primary care clinic revealed a 16 percent prevalence of Toxocara canis infection. The outcome of routine drug-supportive psychotherapy treatment of 100 patients with alcohol-related problem in Kuwait's only psychiatric hospital was evaluated in four 6 month's intervals. A prospective controlled study was carried out at Tygerberg Hospital to ascertain the difference between booked and unbooked mothers with regard to social and medical aspects and knowledge of the medical system. Thirty unbooked mothers were compared with 77 booked mothers. The general picture that emerged was that the unbooked mother is young, unmarried and unemployed, has a low income and has no permanent relationship with the father of the infant. However, she knows where the antenatal clinic is and that she should and when she should attend. The reasons for not attending were non-specific.

Forty-one black patients aged 21 to 75 years with hepatic tuberculosis diagnosed at liver biopsy were studied prospectively. Over a 5-year period we have managed 63 diethylstilbestrol-exposed pregnant patients with a standardized protocol requiring weekly cervical examination and decreased physical activity of the patient. This paper reports on a prospective study comprising 125 consecutive adult cases of typhoid fever diagnosed on the basis of positive cultures for typhoid organisms. Salmonella typhi infection was found to be more frequent (89.6%) than S. paratyphi A & B (10.4%).
