Bi-phasic activation of the primary motor cortex by pain and its relation to pain-evoked potentials - an exploratory study.

The primary motor cortex (M1) is a known target for brain stimulation aimed at pain alleviation in chronic pain patients, yet the mechanisms through which analgesia occurs, and the exact pain-motor interrelations are not fully understood. We used noxious contact heat evoked potentials (CHEPs) and cortical source analysis to further explore the relevance of M1 in pain processing. Twenty-four healthy young females received brief noxious heat stimuli to their left non-dominant volar forearm, simultaneously with CHEPs recordings. Thereafter, the pain-evoked activity of M1 and a control area in the

Explicit knowledge enhances motor vigor and performance: motivation versus practice in sequence tasks.

Motor skill learning involves a practice-induced improvement in the speed and/or accuracy of a discrete movement. It is often thought that paradigms involving repetitive practice of discrete movements performed in a fixed sequence result in a further enhancement of skill beyond practice of the individual movements in a random order. Sequence-specific performance improvements could, however, arise without practice as a result of knowledge of the sequence order; knowledge could operate by either enabling advanced motor planning of the known sequence elements or by increasing overall motivation.

Sparing of coarse stereopsis in stereodeficient children with a history of amblyopia.

Stereoscopic depth perception may be obtained from small retinal disparities that can be fused for single vision (fine stereopsis), but reliable depth information is also obtained from larger disparities that produce double vision (coarse stereopsis). Here we assess the possibility that the early development of coarse stereopsis makes it resilient to the factors that cause amblyopia by comparing performance in children with a history of strabismic, anisometropic, or aniso-strabismic amblyopia and age-matched controls (5-12 years). The task was to indicate whether a cartoon character was nearer

Psychophysiological responses to idiosyncratic stress in bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

This study examined psychophysiological stress responses to idiosyncratically relevant stress in bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), in relation to autonomic cardiac control and nutritional status. A total of 81 women with BN, BED and healthy controls (HC) took part in an in sensu exposure to idiosyncratic stress. Psychological and peripheral physiological parameters were measured, and tonic heart rate variability, nutritional status, and types of stress were determined. In response to stress exposure, both eating disordered groups showed a stronger reactivity of sadness, and

Scent marking by the male domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is stimulated by an object's novelty and its specific visual or tactile characteristics.

"Chinning" is a stereotyped scent marking behavior of domestic rabbits, in which the animal rubs the underside of its chin against objects in order to deposit scent gland secretions. Although the long-term maintenance of chinning requires circulating gonadal steroids, little is known about the acute regulation of this behavior. To define specific environmental stimuli that engage the chinning motor pattern, male rabbits were placed into an open field arena containing markable objects ("standard" bricks, "tall" bricks, or polished onyx spheres), observed for 30 min, returned to the home cage fo

Effects of phase duration and pulse rate on loudness and pitch percepts in the first auditory midbrain implant patients: Comparison to cochlear implant and auditory brainstem implant results.

The auditory midbrain implant (AMI), which is designed for stimulation of the inferior colliculus (IC), is now in clinical trials. The AMI consists of a single shank array (20 contacts) and uses a stimulation strategy originally designed for cochlear implants since it is already approved for human use and we do not yet know how to optimally activate the auditory midbrain. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of different pulse rates and phase durations on loudness and pitch percepts because these parameters are required to implement the AMI stimulation strategy. Although each

Anxiety sensitivity and auditory perception of heartbeat.

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is the fear of sensations associated with autonomic arousal. AS has been associated with the development and maintenance of panic disorder. Given that panic patients often rate cardiac symptoms as the most fear-provoking feature of a panic attack, AS individuals may be especially responsive to cardiac stimuli. Consequently, we developed a signal-in-white-noise detection paradigm to examine the strategies that high and low AS individuals use to detect and discriminate normal and abnormal heartbeat sounds. Compared to low AS individuals, high AS individuals demonstrated

Attention 'capture' by the flash-lag flash.

We report data from eight participants who made alignment judgements between a moving object and a stationary, continuously visible 'landmark'. A reversing object had to overshoot the landmark by a significant amount in order to appear to reverse aligned with it. In addition, an adjacent flash irrelevant to the judgment task reliably increased this illusory 'foreshortening'. This and other results are most simply explained by a model in which the flash causes attentional capture, complemented by processes of temporal integration, or backward inhibition, and object representation. A flash used

Human perceptual learning in the peripheral visual field: sensory thresholds and neurophysiological correlates.

Perceptual learning in the peripheral visual field was studied in 24 adults using vernier targets. The aim was to relate perceptual improvements to changes of electrical brain activity. Thresholds were measured before, during, and after training, and on the next day. During training, the subjects passively looked at suprathreshold targets, and EEG activity was recorded from 30 electrodes over the occipital brain areas. Mean evoked potentials were computed for the first and second block of 1200 stimulus presentations, and the scalp topography of visual evoked potential (VEP) activity was analys

Integration of multiple motion vectors over space: an fMRI study of transparent motion perception.

Visual scenes are frequently composed of objects that move in different directions. To segment such scenes into distinct objects or image planes, local motion cues have to be evaluated and integrated according to criteria of global coherence. When several populations of coherently moving random dots penetrate each other, the visual system tends to assign them to different planes-perceived as transparent motion. This process of integration was studied by changing the angle of motion trajectories with which groups of dots penetrate each other or by varying the spatial constellation of dots movin

Effects of image scale and system time delay on simulator sickness within head-coupled virtual environments.

Novel patterns of visual-vestibular intersensory stimulation often result in symptoms of simulator sickness, raising health and safety concerns regarding virtual environment exposure. Two experiments investigated the effect of conflicting visual-vestibular cues on subjective reports of simulator sickness during and after a 50-min exposure to a head-coupled virtual interface. Virtual image scale factors (0.5. 1.0, 2.0 magnification, generated by varying geometric field of view angle) were investigated in Experiment 1, and additional system time delays (125, 250 ms) were investigated in Experime

Inter-relationship between different psychoacoustic measures assumed to be related to the cochlear active mechanism.

The active mechanism in the cochlea is thought to depend on the integrity of the outer hair cells (OHCs). Cochlear hearing loss is usually associated with damage to both inner hair cells (IHCs) and OHCs, with the latter resulting in a reduction in or complete loss of the function of the active mechanism. It is believed that the active mechanism contributes to the sharpness of tuning on the basilar membrane (BM) and is also responsible for compressive input-output functions on the BM. Hence, one would expect a close relationship between measures of sharpness of tuning and measures of compressio

Visual processing and dyslexia.

Magnocellular-pathway deficits have been hypothesized to be responsible for the problems experienced by dyslexic individuals in reading. However, research has yet to provide a detailed account of the consequences of these deficits or to identify the behavioural link between them and reading disabilities. The aim of the present study was to determine the potential consequences of the magnocellular-pathway deficits for dyslexics in a comprehensive range of visual tasks. Dyslexics and nondyslexics were compared on their ability to (i) perform vernier-acuity and orientation-acuity tasks; (ii) perc

Neuronal correlates of amblyopia in the visual cortex of macaque monkeys with experimental strabismus and anisometropia.

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of pattern vision. After surgical creation of esotropic strabismus in the first weeks of life or after wearing -10 diopter contact lenses in one eye to simulate anisometropia during the first months of life, macaques often develop amblyopia. We studied the response properties of visual cortex neurons in six amblyopic macaques; three monkeys were anisometropic, and three were strabismic. In all monkeys, cortical binocularity was reduced. In anisometropes, the amblyopic eye influenced a relatively small proportion of cortical neurons; in strabismics, the inf

The perception of lightness in 3-D curved objects.

Lightness constancy in complex scenes requires that the visual system take account of information concerning variations of illumination falling on visible surfaces. Three experiments on the perception of lightness for three-dimensional (3-D) curved objects show that human observers are better able to perform this accounting for certain scenes than for others. The experiments investigate the effect of object curvature, illumination direction, and object shape on lightness perception. Lightness constancy was quite good when a rich local gray-level context was provided. Deviations occurred when b

Role of image acceleration in judging landing location of free-falling projectiles.

The vertical acceleration of the projective image of a free-falling object specifies whether the object will land behind or in front of the observation site. Human sensitivity to this visual cue was investigated in 4 studies. Experiments 1 and 2 examined sensitivity to both constant and accelerating vertical acceleration. Detection of acceleration required a total change in velocity that was about 20% of the average velocity. In Experiments 3 and 4, subjects judged where computer-simulated free-falling objects would land relative to the observation site by viewing the initial segment of the fl

Eliciting Pleasantness With Haptic Feedback: The Role of Physical and Pseudo-Haptic Resistance in Virtual Archery.

Although haptic technologies that allow users to touch virtual objects have been actively researched in the academic field, they are not yet widely adopted in real-world applications. To promote broader adoption, designing haptic stimuli that elicit pleasant sensations is essential since hedonic motivation significantly drives user acceptance. However, how such pleasantness can be effectively induced through haptic stimulation during a user's active exploration remains an open question. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the applied force during user actions and the result

Assessment of axonal excitability properties in two branches of the human facial nerve.

BACKGROUND: Axonal excitability methods have an established role in determining the biophysical properties of human axons in the clinical setting. The translation and refinement of these techniques for application to the facial nerve is important for advancing the pathophysiological understanding of facial nerve disorders. Facial nerve disorders are common and debilitating, yet in most cases diagnosis is based on clinical judgment alone. The pathophysiology of most causes of facial palsy remains unclear. NEW METHOD: Novel techniques for the acquisition of facial nerve excitability properties

Modulations of pain sensations.

Representation of time may affect pain perception. We investigated a group of volunteers looking at different clocks while they were being exposed to the same intensity of pain in two experiments. In one case, they saw the actual time, while in the other, they gazed at a clock that made it seem like the stimulation was shortened, even though it wasn't. These results show that simply believing that time is on your side can make anything more bearable. The results were not influenced by the color of the clock (red or green), or the presence of indexes such as (sad or smiling) smileys. The effect

Vibrotactile difference thresholds: effects of vibration frequency, vibration magnitude, contact area, and body location.

It has not been established whether the smallest perceptible change in the intensity of vibrotactile stimuli depends on the somatosensory channel mediating the sensation. This study investigated intensity difference thresholds for vibration using contact conditions (different frequencies, magnitudes, contact areas, body locations) selected so that perception would be mediated by more than one psychophysical channel. It was hypothesized that difference thresholds mediated by the non-Pacinian I (NPI) channel and the Pacinian (P) channel would differ. Using two different contactors (1-mm diameter
