Health and safety risks associated with public injecting among people who inject drugs in Bangkok, Thailand.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The injection of illicit drugs in public spaces is known to pose significant health risks to people who inject drugs (IDU). However, to our knowledge this practice has not been explored in the Asian context. Therefore, we sought to characterise the prevalence of and factors associated with public injecting among a community-recruited sample of IDU in Bangkok, Thailand. DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were derived from the Mitsampan Community Research Project between July and October 2011. Using multivariate logistic regression, this cross-sectional study examined the prevalenc

The Issue of Leptospirosis in Grenada.

The aim of this study was to conduct a literature and secondary data review regarding leptospirosis and its impact in Grenada. The data analysed consisted of a published secondary source of animal investigations. The results of this investigation suggested that the burden of this disease is quite substantial and significant for the population of Grenada, as well as its global visitors. An examination into the literature related to public health policies and practices that could be suited to a developing nation like Grenada was then conducted. Recommendations were made regarding these analysed

A Public Health Strategy for the Opioid Crisis.

Drug overdose is now the leading cause of injury death in the United States. Most overdose fatalities involve opioids, which include prescription medication, heroin, and illicit fentanyl. Current data reveal that the overdose crisis affects all demographic groups and that overdose rates are now rising most rapidly among African Americans. We provide a public health perspective that can be used to mobilize a comprehensive local, state, and national response to the opioid crisis. We argue that framing the crisis from a public health perspective requires considering the interaction of multiple de

Venous thromboembolism research priorities: A scientific statement from the American Heart Association and the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The impact of the Surgeon General's Call to Action in 2008 has been lower than expected given the public health impact of this disease. This scientific statement highlights future research priorities in VTE, developed by experts and a crowdsourcing survey across 16 scientific organizations. At the fundamental research level (T0), researchers need to identify pathobiologic causative mechanisms for the 50% of patients with unprovoked VTE and better understand mechanisms that differentiate hemostasis from thrombosis. At the

Public Health Benefits from Livestock Rift Valley Fever Control: A Simulation of Two Epidemics in Kenya.

In controlling Rift Valley fever, public health sector optimises health benefits by considering cost-effective control options. We modelled cost-effectiveness of livestock RVF control from a public health perspective in Kenya. Analysis was limited to pastoral and agro-pastoral system high-risk areas, for a 10-year period incorporating two epidemics: 2006/2007 and a hypothetical one in 2014/2015. Four integrated strategies (baseline and alternatives), combined from three vaccination and two surveillance options, were compared. Baseline strategy included annual vaccination of 1.2-11% animals plu

The other half of the equation: Serving young men in a young women's reproductive health clinic.

CONTEXT: Efforts to improve reproductive health typically target women. Family planning agencies serving high-risk young women may be particularly suited to integrating young men in their health promotion efforts. METHODS: In 2001, a family planning clinic in San Francisco serving primarily young women opened a male clinic as part of a male involvement program that includes education and outreach components. Client volume was assessed by reviewing billing data. New male clients completed questionnaires on their demographic characteristics, sexual and health-seeking behavior, and reason for cl

Sexuality, sexual well being, and intimacy during COVID-19 pandemic: An advocacy perspective.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV-2, has emerged as a global public health threat. The implications are much beyond just health crisis, and it has long-lasting psychosocial and economic implications. Although the psychological offshoots such as depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, and sleep disturbances are being studied in-depth, there is a dearth of literature on the sexual well-being and sexual practices during this pandemic. Considering the physical distancing; travel restrictions; the high human-human transmission rate; m

Acute Lung Injury in aortic dissection : new insights in anesthetic management strategies.

Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a severe cardiovascular disease characterized by rapid progress and a high mortality rate. The incidence of acute aortic dissection is approximately 5 to 30 per 1 million people worldwide. In clinical practice, about 35% of AAD patients are complicated with acute lung injury (ALI). AAD complicated with ALI can seriously affect patients' prognosis and even increase mortality. However, the pathogenesis of AAD combined with ALI remains largely unknown. Given the public health burden of AAD combined with ALI, we reviewed the anesthetic management advances and highl

Immunization delivery methods: practice recommendations.

Immunization has unequivocally contributed to large-scale reductions in mortality and morbidity due to infectious diseases. In general, consensus on the scheduling of immunizations has been achieved at the national or international level by immunization advisory committees. However, immunization delivery methods are varied and numerous. Although specific methods have been proposed, compared and evaluated, the available evidence has not been comprehensively summarized for informed public health action. This paper integrates evidence based on scientific documentation, a Canada-wide practice surv

Health care for the poor: some policy alternatives.

Changes in the financing and organization of medical care are most likely to affect adversely the poor who have significant needs for care, but face increasingly stringent eligibility criteria in Medicaid and other public programs. Americans estimated to have neither private nor public health insurance coverage number 33 million persons, and with increased cost pressures, voluntary and proprietary hospitals are less willing to treat such patients. One quarter of hospitals provide 60 percent of all care to the poor, and many of these nonprofit and public hospitals face economic difficulties and

The Health Belief Model as an explanatory framework for COVID-19 prevention practices.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 government public health measures are necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19, however, their efficacy is largely dependent on adherence. This study utilized the Health Belief Model (HBM) to explain the public's adopted prevention practices during the COVID-19 outbreak in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This study used "COVID-19 Snapshot MOnitoring (COSMO): monitoring knowledge, risk perceptions, preventive behaviours, and public trust in the current coronavirus outbreak" research protocol which is developed by the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the COSMO group. Including mental health care in a model of European health system.

The management of a health system is a matter of economics and business administration because of the costs induced by goods and services delivered. Economics teaches us that the positive effects induced by competition in free markets cannot be expected in health care, which is a classic example of market failure from both demand and supply sides. The most sensible key concepts to refer for managing a health system are funding and provision. While the logical solution for the first variable is universal coverage through general taxation, the second one requires a deeper understanding. Integrat

Expert consensus on sustainable employability of older workers: research, practice, and policy dimensions.

INTRODUCTION: Sustainable employability has been recognized as a central construct for understanding workers' continued participation in the labor market throughout the life course, particularly in the context of population aging, technological transformations, and changing work arrangements. Despite growing research in this field, conceptual fragmentation and a lack of consensus persist regarding the key factors, organizational practices, and public policies associated with the construct. Accordingly, this study aimed to identify factors, organizational practices, public policies, and researc
