An early treatment with 17-β-estradiol is neuroprotective against the long-term effects of neonatal ionizing radiation exposure.

Ionizing radiations can induce oxidative stress on target tissues, acting mainly through reactive oxygen species (ROS). The aim of this work was to investigate if 17-β-estradiol (βE) was able to prevent hippocampal-related behavioral and biochemical changes induced by neonatal ionizing radiation exposure and to elucidate a potential neuroprotective mechanism. Male Wistar rats were irradiated with 5 Gy of X-rays between 24 and 48 h after birth. A subset of rats was subcutaneously administered with successive injections of βE or 17-α-estradiol (αE), prior and after irradiation. Rats were subject

[Dependence of anti-inflammatory effects of high peak-power pulsed electromagnetic radiation of extremely high frequency on exposure parameters].

A pronounced anti-inflammatory effect of high peak-power pulsed electromagnetic radiation of extremely high frequency was shown for the first time in a model of zymosan-induced footpad edema in mice. Exposure to radiation of specific parameters (35, 27 GHz, peak power 20 kW, pulse widths 400-600 ns, pulse repetition frequency 5-500 Hz) decreased the exudative edema and local hyperthermia by 20% compared to the control. The kinetics and the magnitude of the anti-inflammatory effect were comparable with those induced by sodium diclofenac at a dose of 3 mg/kg. It was found that the anti-inflammat

Ultraviolet-B radiation effects on the structure and function of lower trophic levels of the marine planktonic food web.

The impact of UV-B radiation (UVBR; 280-320 nm) on lower levels of a natural plankton assemblage (bacteria, phytoplankton and microzooplankton) from the St. Lawrence Estuary was studied during 9 days using several immersed outdoor mesocosms. Two exposure treatments were used in triplicate mesocosms: natural UVBR (N treatment, considered as the control treatment) and lamp-enhanced UVBR (H treatment, simulating 60% depletion of the ozone layer). A phytoplankton bloom developed after day 3, but no significant differences were found between treatments during the entire experiment for phytoplankton

In vivo dose perturbation effects of metallic dental alloys during head and neck irradiation with intensity modulated radiation therapy.

A patient with base of tongue squamous sell carcinoma, with significant CT artifact-inducing metallic alloy, non-removable dental restorations in both the mandible and maxilla was identified. Simultaneous with IMRT treatment, thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) were placed in the oral cavity. After a series of three treatments, the data from the TLDs and software calculations were analyzed. Analysis of mean in vivo TLD dosimetry reveals differentials from software predicted dose calculation that fall within acceptable dose variation limits. IMRT dose calculation software is a relatively accura

Effects of external beam radiation in the rat tibial nerve after crush, transection and repair, or nerve isograft paradigms.

INTRODUCTION: In head and neck surgery, radiation therapy is often administered to an injured nerve. Previous studies have examined the effects of either preoperative or postoperative radiation on nerve regeneration in rodents. In these studies, histomorphometric analysis was performed up to 8 month postoperatively. Given the exceptional neuroregenerative capacity of rodents, significant differences in nerve regeneration may go undetected if nerves are evaluated at such distant postoperative time points. This study is designed with a more appropriate model and investigates the effects of radia

Protective effects of extracted human-liver RNA, a known interferon inducer, against radiation-induced cytogenetic damage in male mice.

Cells in vitro or in vivo pre-exposed to low-dose radiation (LDR) or low concentrations of chemical mutagens became more resistant to large-dose radiation-induced DNA or chromosome damage. This was known as radio-adaptive response, for which the exact mechanism was unclear. However, multiple cellular and molecular responses to LDR have been documented, for instance, the induction of some cytokines such as interferon (IFN). Administration of exogenous IFN to cultured cells or mice showed marked radio-protection. In the present study, we investigated the in vivo radio-protective effects of extra

Dose, fractionation and overall treatment time in radiation therapy--the effects on local control for cancer of the larynx.

The effect of total tumor dose, split course treatment and overall treatment time on local control was analysed in a retrospective series of 997 patients with carcinoma of the larynx, treated with megavoltage radiotherapy only. Primary tumors were classified by site (glottis and supraglottis) and T-stage. Continuous course (CC, n = 594) treatment was given primarily to small tumors. Split course radiation (SC, n = 403) was generally given to patients with larger field sizes. Total doses of irradiation ranged from 50 to 79 Gy, with a mean of 64 Gy in CC and 66 Gy in SC. Most of the treatments w

Cancer incidence among welders: possible effects of exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic radiation (ELF) and to welding fumes.

Epidemiological studies of cancer incidence among welders disclose a pooled total of 146 cases of leukemia observed versus 159.46 expected, a risk ratio of 0.92, and 40 cases of acute leukemia observed versus 43.39 expected, a risk ratio of 0.92. For respiratory tract cancer, the pooled total is 1789 cases observed versus 1290.7 expected, a risk ratio of 1.39. Most electric welders are exposed to extremely low frequency electromagnetic radiation (ELF) (magnetic flux densities of up to 100,000 microT), a suspected leukemogen, and to concentrated metallic aerosols (up to 200 mg/m3), which can co

Short- and long-term effects of radiation on T-cell subsets in peripheral blood of patients with Hodgkin's disease.

The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of radiotherapy on subpopulations of peripheral blood T cells from patients with Hodgkin's disease. T cell were purified from each specimen, and proportions and absolute numbers of T lymphocytes bearing receptors for the Fc portion of IgG (TG) and for Fc portion of IgM (TM) were enumerated by rosetting T cells with ox red blood cells (ORBC), which had been coated with anti-ORBC rabbit IgG or IgM, respectively. In untreated patients, the percentage of TG cells was significantly increased, and the percentage of TM cells was significantly d

Comparison of volumetric dynamic optical coherence tomography with biological methods for evaluation of radiation effects in prostate tumor spheroids.

SIGNIFICANCE: Three-dimensional (3D) tumor spheroids are more physiologically representative of in vivo patient tumors compared with two-dimensional monolayer culture. However, their 3D nature challenges the use of conventional biological techniques such as proliferation assays, fluorescence microscopy, and the clonogenic assay, which is the gold standard method for assessing cell survival following radiation. However, the clonogenic assay requires spheroid disaggregation. AIM: Non-invasive volumetric imaging with dynamic optical coherence tomography (dOCT) enables cellular activity to be vis

Window-specific effects of ultraviolet radiation and air pollution on ovarian reserve in infertile women: A retrospective cohort study.

The environmental factors affecting ovarian reserve are not fully understood, particularly during vulnerable stages of follicular development. In this retrospective cohort study of 2804 infertile women, we assessed the associations of ambient ultraviolet radiation (UV) and air pollutants with ovarian reserve markers. Serum levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured, and residential exposures to UV radiation, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5, ≤2.5 μm) were assigned

Effects of low-dose radiation produced during radiofrequency ablation guided by 3D mapping on mitochondrial apoptosis in diabetic cardiomyocytes.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) mapping has been widely used in the clinical radiofrequency ablation of arrhythmia; however, the dose of intraoperative radiation exposure has not been determined. Moreover, whether a single instance of intraoperative radiation exposure has an effect on myocardial tissue or exacerbates diabetic heart injury remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, we evaluated the dose of intraoperative radiation generated during radiofrequency ablation via 3D mapping. ELISA, Western blot, flow cytometry, and oxygen consumption rate detection were used to ident

Effects of Palliative Esophageal External Beam Radiation Therapy in Patients with Stent for Esophageal Cancer: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Self-expandable metallic stents (SEMS) provide immediate but nondurable dysphagia relief in esophageal cancer, while external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) provides slower, more durable dysphagia relief. While the combination of SEMS with EBRT would seem to offer both rapid and durable dysphagia relief in the palliative setting, there remains controversy on its safety and efficacy. We investigated patient outcomes regarding EBRT after SEMS placement in patients with incurable esophageal cancer at a regional Canadian cancer program. METHODS: We conducted a single-centre retrospective chart

Dosimetric effects of prone immobilization devices on skin in intensity-modulated radiation therapy for gynecologic cancer: a retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The dose perturbation effect of immobilization devices is often overlooked in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for gynecologic cancer. This retrospective study assessed the dosimetric effects of a prone immobilization device combined with a belly board (PIDBB) on the skin. METHODS: We recruited 63 women with gynecologic cancer undergoing postoperative IMRT at our institute. A 0.3 cm thick skin contour and body contours with or without PIDBB system were outlined for each patient. Dose calculations were performed for the two sets of contours using the same plan, named Pla

Antitumour effects of SFX-01 molecule in combination with ionizing radiation in preclinical and in vivo models of rhabdomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Despite a multimodal approach including surgery, chemo- and radiotherapy, the 5-year event-free survival rate for rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), the most common soft tissue sarcoma in childhood, remains very poor for metastatic patients, mainly due to the selection and proliferation of tumour cells driving resistance mechanisms. Personalised medicine-based protocols using new drugs or targeted therapies in combination with conventional treatments have the potential to enhance the therapeutic effects, while minimizing damage to healthy tissues in a wide range of human malignancies, with se

Effects of far-infrared radiation lamp therapy on recovery from a simulated soccer-match in elite female soccer players.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

We investigated the effects of far-infrared radiation (FIR) lamp therapy on changes in muscle damage and performance parameters following six sets of 15-min Loughborough intermittent shuttle test (LIST), a simulated soccer match. Twenty-four elite female soccer players (20-24 y) were assigned into FIR or sham treatment group (n = 12/group). The participants received a 60-min FIR or sham treatment (30 min per muscle) over knee extensors (KE) and flexors (KF) at 2, 25, 49, 73, and 97 h post-LIST. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) torque and muscle soreness of the KE and KF, plasma cr

Rapid and successful effects of combining dupilumab with ultraviolet B radiation therapy in the treatment of Papuloerythroderma of Ofuji.

Papuloerythroderma of Ofuji (PEO) is an uncommon disease characterised by widespread erythroderma composed of intensely pruritic solid papules coalescing into plaques sparing the skin folds (deck-chair sign). The pathogenesis of PEO remains unclear, although T helper (Th) 2 and Th22 cells may play an important role. Dupilumab is an interleukin (IL)-4 receptor α-antagonist that effectively reduces Th2 responses, which has drawn increasing attention in the treatment of PEO patients. Here, we reported a successful case of dupilumab treatment in combination with ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation thera
