An investigation of the chemotherapeutic effects of 2 anthelmintics, albendazole (ABZ, methyl 5-[propylthio]benzimidazole-2- carbamate) and mebendazole (MBZ, methyl 5-[benzoyl]benzimidazole-2-carbamate), on Hymenolepis microstoma and Hymenolepis diminuta in experimentally infected mice and rats is reported. Single (50 mg/kg) or multiple daily oral doses (50 mg kg-1 day-1 for 3 consecutive days) of MBZ had no effect on H. microstoma; at necropsy, the drug treated mice harbored appreciable numbers of the parasite in the bile duct and biliary passages. Intestinal goblet cell numbers in two regions of the small intestine (20-30% and 60-70% distance form the pylorus) of male, 6- to 8-week-old C57 mice have been monitored following a 5-cysticercoid infection of the rat tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta. The dry brain weights of normal, untreated and treated hydrocephalic pups of Texas, Lewis and Texas/Lewis cross rats aged from 2 to 60 days were compared using the technique of generalised linear modelling. The inability of the 'ethanol/high vitamin A Lieber-DeCarli diet' to induce liver fibrosis in two different rat strains was further evaluated by determining changes in parameters of liver cell damage and of retinoid and lipid metabolism. Seventeen paragangliomas were identified in a retrospective review of 200 NTP/NCI carcinogenicity studies in F344/N rats that served either as control or treated animals. Most tumors were grossly visible and located in the retroperitoneum adjacent to the vertebrae and aorta near the kidneys. Vomitoxin (deoxynivalenol), a tricothecene mycotoxin produced by Fusarium species, has been detected in corn, wheat and other cereal grains intended for consumption by man and by animals used for food. The effects of prednisolone were investigated in C57Bl/6 mice infected with Strongyloides ratti. In primary infections, the numbers of adult worms in the small intestine and larvae in the stools were increased and there was a slight delay in the spontaneous expulsion of worms.
