Carotid sinus reflex hypersensitivity involves profound and intermittent changes in heart rate and blood pressure associated with symptoms of dizziness and syncope. This involves a reflex arc in which the main defect is believed to lie within the central nervous system. The discovery of classical and peptidergic neurotransmitters within the same neurone, and the presence of these peptides within the central nervous system raises the possibility that carotid sinus reflex hypersensitivity may be related to an abnormality of peptide distribution or function.

We studied the effect of intersignal interval (ISI) on the averaged acoustic reflex in nine young and nine elderly subjects. Over the range of ISIs from 1.5 to 9 sec, there was an interaction between ISI and age group, but the effect was unique to reflex mode. Results emphasize the importance of measuring both crossed and uncrossed reflex waveforms, in the study of aging, and of controlling the ISI in order to avoid overestimation of aging effects.

We examined the H-reflex-index of triceps surae muscle (HI) and the motor nerve conduction velocity of the tibial nerve (mNLG) of 56 alcohol dependent patients. The results were compared with neurologic disorders, duration of the dependency and the type of alcoholism according to Jellinek. The HI showed significant more pathological changes than the mNLG.

Synovial reactions do not only affect articular but also tenosynovial compartments as proven by low kV radiography in 3 views. Erosions develop in both compartments and also enthesitically at the insertions of fibrous structures. There are also localized osseous changes, which resemble localized areas of hyperparathyroidism. In cases with unilateral trauma of a lesser degree scintigraphic examination of the soft tissues and bones of the contralateral side may confirm the results. The response of the soft tissues and bones is more severe distally.

The present experiments were designed to examine the reflex cardiovascular effects of intracoronary administration of acetylstrophanthidin in the conscious dog. The relationships between properties of the acoustic reflex and temporary threshold shift (TTS) were examined in eight subjects exposed to a 95 dB SPL, 1.0-kHz octave-band noise for 4 h. The specific pattern of TTS obtained from this exposure was consistent with the expected sensitivity changes along the cochlear partition. Crossed and uncrossed acoustic reflex amplitude was measured in 99 adult subjects. Minor middle ear dysfunction profoundly influenced acoustic reflex amplitude. Reflex amplitude in subjects with minor impedance abnormality was, on the average, decreased by 68% in comparison to a matched control group. There was a complex relationship among age, sensorineural hearing loss, signal bandwidth and acoustic reflex amplitude. Sensorineural hearing loss differentially influenced acoustic reflex amplitude for young versus older subjects.

We have recorded the latency of the anal reflex, using a simple electrophysiological method, in 22 patients with anorectal incontinence and in 33 control subjects without anorectal disease. The mean latency in the control subjects was 8.3 ms (range 5-11.3 ms). In the patients with faecal incontinence the mean latency of the anal reflex was 13.0 ms (range 6.5-22.0 ms).
