BACKGROUND: This paper analyses gender inequalities in health status and in social determinants of health among the elderly in western Europe.
METHODS: Data came from the first wave of the "Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe" (2004). For the purposes of this study a subsample of community-residing people aged 65-85 years with no paid work was selected (4218 men and 5007 women). Multiple logistic regression models separated by sex and adjusted for age and country were fitted.
RESULTS: Women were more likely to report poor health status, limitations in mobility and poor mental h

OBJECTIVES: Two sources of contextual risk on the prevalence and severity of intimate partner violence (IPV) are investigated: household economic condition and neighborhood disadvantage. There is debate about whether each context is an independent source of IPV risk and whether risks cumulate over contexts.
METHODS: Data from the second wave of the National Survey of Families and Households are combined with tract level data from the 1990 U.S. Census. A sub-sample of co-resident couples with a child aged 5-17 in the household was selected for analysis (n=2,273). IPV is measured in three ways:

INTRODUCTION: In Taranto, Southern Italy, adverse impacts on the environment and human health due to industrial installations have been studied. In the literature, associations have been reported between gender, environmental factors, and lung cancer mortality in women and men. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between gender, residence in areas with high environmental pressures, bronchus/lung cancer characteristics, and death rate.
METHODS: Data from the Taranto Cancer Registry were used, including all women and men with invasive bronchus/lung cancer diagnosed betwee

Metabolic health and socioeconomic environments may jointly shape neurodevelopment during adolescence, a sensitive period of brain maturation. This cross-sectional study investigated overall and neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation moderated associations between glycemic control and brain structure in youth. Data were analyzed from 705 healthy 10-13-year-olds participating in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study® across 21 sites in the United States. Glycemic control was assessed using hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), brain structure was evaluated via magnetic resonance imaging

BACKGROUND: Despite growing research interest on the influences of migration and regions of residence on human behaviors, studies on the influences of migration and region of residence on women empowerment especially in sub-Saharan Africa are lacking. Thus, this study investigated migration status and region of residence as correlates of women empowerment in Nigeria.
METHODS: The study utilized data of 37,762 women aged 15-49 years from the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The outcome variables were indices of household decision making, financial decision-making, sexual right, expe

Socioeconomic disadvantage is associated with higher obesity risk in older adults, but whether walkable neighborhoods modify these inequalities remains unclear. We examined whether neighborhood walkability moderates the association between area-level socioeconomic status (SES) and adiposity among older adults with overweight or obesity living in Mediterranean cities. This cross-sectional study analyzed baseline data from 1286 urban-dwelling adults aged 55 to 75 years with overweight or obesity and metabolic syndrome residing in six Andalusian cities. Area-level SES was assessed using the 2011

BACKGROUND: Socioenvironmental deprivation and discrimination are associated with poorer cancer outcomes, yet their combined impact remains understudied. This study examines the independent and combined impact of these factors on cancer-related outcomes.
METHODS: Survey data (2018-2020) from 7977 participants across 6 National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers assessed perceived discrimination (PD), area-level deprivation, lifestyle factors (smoking and obesity), and self-reported breast and colorectal cancer screening behaviors. Multivariate and multilevel logistic regression models

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common pediatric liver disease, yet known biological risk factors do not fully explain its development. This study evaluated the association between social determinants of health (SDH)-including income, education, housing, and environmental factors-and MASLD in children with overweight or obesity.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included children with overweight or obesity evaluated in pediatric gastroenterology clinics, stratified by the presence of MASLD. Participants' residential census tracts were

Evidence suggests that neighborhood green space is associated with improvements in mental health. However, few studies have simultaneously considered both the risky and protective dimensions of green space in relation to psychological distress. Moreover, whether these spaces contribute to narrowing gaps in mental health problems across different social groups remains insufficiently understood. We aimed to examine the longitudinal association between neighborhood green space and psychological distress in adults, taking into account socioeconomic disparities. We used data from the Millennium Coh

BACKGROUND: The retail environment plays an important role in impulse purchase behavior. This study aims to examine the extent to which different sources of exposure to tobacco in the Dutch retail environment are associated with impulse purchases of tobacco. We investigate whether this association differs based on neighborhood disadvantage, demographic and smoking characteristics.
AIMS AND METHODS: We employed a cross-sectional online survey design among 1223 Dutch adults who smoke from a probability-based panel database, with half residing in a disadvantaged neighborhood. We conducted multip

PURPOSE: The association between social integration and mortality in older adults from historically excluded groups may not align with the patterns observed in predominately white samples. We modeled latent groups of social integration and their association with 10-year all-cause mortality in a cohort of older adults from historically excluded racial/ethnic groups.
METHODS: In a sub-sample of a national cohort study of older adults, we used latent class analysis to model social integration using ten item indicators spanning couple status, network characteristics, and neighborhood and communit

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is associated with poor health outcomes and is considered a serious public health problem particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Specific subgroups are at higher risk of anaemia, such as women of reproductive age.
AIMS: This study examined the prevalence and risk factors of anaemia among ever-married women in Jordan using a secondary analysis of the Jordan Population and Family Health Survey.
METHODS: This is a secondary analysis of data from a nationally representative sample of ever-married women aged 15-49 years that were tested for haemoglobin levels in the

Among the known biomarkers, chemokines, secreted by activated macrophages and T cells, attract groups of immune cells to the site of infection and may determine the clinical outcome. Association studies of CCL-2/MCP-1 -2518 A/G functional SNP linked to high and low phenotypes with tuberculosis disease susceptibility have shown conflicting results in tuberculosis. Some of these differences could be due the variability of latent infection and recent exposure in the control groups. We have therefore carried out a detailed analysis of CCL-2 genotype SNP -2518 (A/G transition) with plasma CCL-2 lev

This work demonstrates the development, calibration, and use of the three-dimensional Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) hydrodynamic and mass transport model to simulate mixing patterns and study the environmental controls on the residence time distributions of a 1.3 ha agricultural wetland in central Iowa. Incorporating time-varying flow boundary conditions and atmospheric forcing, the model was calibrated against observed state variables, including water temperatures, basin hydraulic characteristics, and dye concentrations monitored at the outlet for six tracer studies conducted under

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Most studies to date have assessed visitation between family and residents via the overall frequency of in-person visits. This approach fails to account for 2 different types of involvement included in visitation: care coordination and social visitation. This study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers of care coordination distinct from social visitation with a specific focus on long-term care (LTC) site characteristics and resident functionality.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: One hundred and seventy-five adult participants in the United States with a close fri

Black populations in the United States are increasingly diverse due to immigration, yet population health research frequently aggregates U.S.-born and foreign-born Black adults, obscuring important intraracial heterogeneity. This study examines whether migration timing, duration of U.S. residence, ethnic origin, and regional settlement are associated with obesity as an indicator of cardiometabolic risk among Afro-Caribbean immigrants. We analyzed data from the National Survey of American Life (N = 976), a nationally representative survey of Black adults in the United States. Guided by a racial
