[Ultrasonic aspects of abdominal abscesses and hematomas].

Abdominal ultrasonography often enables to display the fluid collection of an abcess or haematoma. This type of diagnostic procedure is most useful in a post-operative period. The intestinal gases which stop the ultrasonic beam may be responsible for diagnostic failures. Positive results, which are the most frequent, are never the less precious to assess and decide a treatment policy.

Spontaneous resolution of pancreatic masses (pseudocysts?)--Development and disappearance after acute alcoholic pancreatitis.

To determine the incidence and the natural history of retroperitoneal masses complicating acute pancreatitis, 104 cases of acute alcoholic pancreatitis were evaluated prospectively for mass formation. Abdominal masses detected by physical examination and serial x-ray films of the upper portion of the gastrointestinal tract were localized to the retroperitoneum by additional contrast studies, including abdominal angiography. Nonoperative management was urged only for patients with an asymptomatic mass. An abdominal mass developed in 19 patients (18%). In eight of these, it disappeared rapidly,

[Retroperitoneal dedifferentiated liposarcoma: a case report].

A 64 year-old female visited our outpatient clinic with left dull flank pain. The ultrasonography and CT scans showed the large solid mass in 12 cm in maximum diameter, containing large area of fatty element, in the left retroperitoneal space. Under the diagnosis of retroperitoneum liposarcoma, the mass and left kidney was completely removed. Pathological examination revealed the dedifferentiated liposarcoma which contained the distinct two patterns of well differentiated lipoma and dedifferentiated fibrotic sarcomatoid tissue.

Ipsilateral thoraco-lumbar anaesthesia and paravertebral spread after low thoracic paravertebral injection.

We report ipsilateral thoraco-lumbar anaesthesia and paravertebral spread of contrast after injection through a thoracic paravertebral catheter that was placed at the right T8-9 spinal level for pain management in a patient with multiple fractured ribs. We review the literature and describe the subendothoracic fascial communication between the thoracic paravertebral space and the retroperitoneal lumbar paravertebral region, which we propose, is the anatomical basis for ipsilateral thoraco-lumbar anaesthesia and paravertebral spread of contrast in our patient.

Predictive Factors for Operative Time and Blood Loss in Retroperitoneal Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy: A Single-Center Experience.

OBJECTIVES: Operative time and intraoperative blood loss in retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy have decreased over time. This study aimed to identify predictive factors associated with operative time and blood loss and to clarify factors underlying improvements in operative outcomes, with particular focus on sealing device use. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 597 patients who underwent retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy for adrenal tumors at a single institution between December 1993 and October 2021. Patients treated after the introduction of robotic-assisted adrenalecto

AMH and Kisspeptin Receptor Expression in Rare Hydropic Leiomyoma: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND Leiomyomas are common benign uterine tumors (BUMTs) with diverse histopathological subtypes and variable clinical presentations. While most are asymptomatic, some cause significant morbidity, including abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, and pain. Hydropic leiomyomas (HLMs) are rare variants histopathologically characterized by zonal edema and may pose diagnostic challenges, particularly when located in atypical sites such as the retroperitoneal space. This report presents a case of a retroperitoneal HLM with strong expression of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and its receptor (AM…

New technique of En bloc vertebral resection in the thoracolumbar region assisted by retroperitoneal laparoscopy in a single prone position: first results.

PURPOSE: To describe the technique and review the oncological and surgical results of the En Bloc resection assisted by retroperitoneal laparoscopy in a single prone position for tumors in the thoracolumbar region. METHODS: Monocentric retrospective case study. Procedure was performed in a single prone position by a dual team of spine and thoracovascular surgeons. An endoscopic balloon was inflated in the right retroperitoneal cavity. A plan was developed between the anterior spine and vena cava as well as abdominal aorta with segmental vessels ligation. Structures at risk were safely protect

First completely robot-assisted retroperitoneal nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff: a step-by-step technique.

INTRODUCTION: While various surgical techniques have been reported for open and minimally invasive treatment of upper tract urothelial cancer (UTUC), the procedure of robot-assisted nephroureterectomy (NU) with bladder cuff has never been reported using only retroperitoneum without entering abdominal cavity. We developed a novel port placement and technique allowing to perform robot-assisted NU by a unique retroperitoneal approach. METHODS: Between February and June 2021 patients with history of UTUC were treated by robot-assisted NU completely restricted to retroperitoneal space using a sing…

Prevertebral abscess with extension into the hip joint.

We present a case of a paravertebral abscess with extension into the hip joint. The presumed conduit of infection in this case is the iliopsoas bursa, which has been shown to provide direct communication between the retroperitoneal space and the hip joint in up to 15% of cadaveric specimens. The patient was treated with emergent open irrigation and debridement of the hip joint, as well as percutaneous drainage of the prevertebral abscess. The patient remains minimally symptomatic at the 2-year follow-up.

Diagnostic approach to pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Case report.

A diagnosis of lymphangioleiomyomatosis is to be considered in women with pleural chylous effusion when plain chest films show diffuse interstitial changes, possibly associated with cystic-like spaces and overinflation. The CT, showing the presence of a retroperitoneal mass, can ultimately help to outline the diagnosis of this syndrome as in the personal case observed in a postmenopausal woman. A presumptive pre-surgical biopsy diagnosis can be useful for studies of hormone-receptors and may be clinically relevant.

Radiographic changes in retroperitoneal corridor dimensions during staged positioning for prone transpsoas lateral lumbar interbody fusion.

BACKGROUND: Questions about the surgical corridor through the psoas muscle and the retroperitoneal space have persisted since the introduction of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) in the lateral decubitus position. The prone transpsoas (PTP) approach maintains or restores lordosis and allows single-position access to the anterior and posterior columns, but the position of visceral structures during an actual PTP case has not been characterized. METHODS: Retrospective single-arm observational cohort of 51 consecutive adults undergoing LLIF-PTP by 4 fellowship-trained surgeons at 3 sites. …

Comparison of open and laparoscopic surgery for pediatric retroperitoneal teratoma: A single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: The role of laparoscopic surgery in pediatric retroperitoneal teratomas remains unclear because of limited working space and vascular injury concerns. This study compared outcomes of open and laparoscopic surgeries for pediatric retroperitoneal teratomas. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 24 children who underwent resection of a retroperitoneal teratoma at a single center between 2002 and 2024. Thirteen underwent open surgery and 11 underwent laparoscopic surgery. Patient characteristics and perioperative outcomes were compared between groups. Continuous variables were analyzed
