Hemicriconemoides spp. are sheathoid, root-ectoparasitic nematodes with complex taxonomy due to overlapping morphology and cryptic diversity. In this study, an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphology and molecular data supports the characterization of Hemicriconemoides vietnamensis sp. n. recovered from the rhizosphere of roses in Vietnam. The new species females are distinguished by a slightly ventrally curved body with a closely fitting sheath lacking anastomoses, a lip region with two annuli and a protruding first annulus, a long (62-68 μm) mostly straight stylet with rounded, p

Trichoderma spp. produce diverse secondary metabolites with biological activity. This study explored the antimicrobial, antibiofilm, antioxidant, and cytotoxic properties of metabolites from two native Trichoderma strains, 10BR1 and UEPA AR12, isolated from rhizospheric soils. Organic extracts from both strains demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, inhibiting Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as various Candida species, with notable efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus (MICs: 15.6-31.25 µg/mL). The extracts also showed antibiofilm activity, with UEPA AR12 exhibi

Volatile compounds emitted by bacteria can play a significant role in interacting with microorganisms, plants, and other organisms. In this work, we studied the effect of total gaseous mixtures of organic as well as inorganic volatile compounds (VCs) and individual pure volatile organic compounds (VOCs: ketones 2-nonanone, 2-heptanone, 2-undecanone, a sulfur-containing compound dimethyl disulfide) synthesized by the rhizosphere Pseudomonas chlororaphis 449 and Serratia plymuthica IC1270 strains, the soil-borne strain P. fluorescens B-4117, and the spoiled meat isolate S. proteamaculans 94 stra

We performed an NMR and EPR study of the interaction of four [Ga(3,4-HPO)3] chelates with liposomes derived from a soybean extract (SEL) and simpler formulations using POPC (100%) and POPE:POPC (50%). Parent [Fe(3,4-HPO)3] chelates are eligible to prevent Iron Deficiency Chlorosis and we took advantage of the likenesses of the ions Fe (III) and Ga (III), and the fact their metal ion complexes are isostructural, to perform a combined NMR and EPR study to get information about the permeation properties of the complexes. The results demonstrate the presence of liposomes loaded with Ga-chelates an

Inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can accelerate the phytoremediation process by increasing plant biomass and improving soil physicochemical and biological characteristics. However, a quantitative, data-based conclusion is yet to be derived on the roles of AM fungi in remediating soils polluted by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and the impact factors are unclear. To address these issues, we performed a meta-analysis of 45 articles to estimate the effects of AM inoculation on the phytoremediation of soils polluted by PAHs and to examine the influence of experimental c

The primary source of soil pollution is a complex mixture of numerous inorganic and organic compounds (including chlorinated compounds, nutrients, and heavy metals, etc.). The presence of all of these compounds makes remediation and cleanup difficult. In this study, the phytoremediation ability of Jatropha curcas and Pongamia pinnata was tested to remove nickel (Ni) and Zinc (Zn) from paper mill and municipal landfill contaminated soils, to understand the uptake potential and to estimate the accumulation pattern of Ni and Zn in the vegetative parts of the plant. The experiments were carried ou

Crop productivity is limited by several environmental constraints. Among these, salt stress plays a key role in limiting the growth and yield production of economically important agricultural crops. However, the exogenous fertigation of vitamins and minerals could serve as a "shot-gun" approach for offsetting the deleterious effects of salts present in the rhizosphere. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to quantify the efficacy of foliar fertigation of ascorbic acid (vitamin-C) and zinc (Zn) on the physio-biochemical attributes of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. Genotype B-14011) grown in a sal

Bacterial quorum-sensing (QS) molecules are one of the primary means allowing communication between bacterial cells or populations. Plants also evolved to perceive and respond to those molecules. N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHL) are QS molecules, of which impact has been extensively studied in different plants. Most studies, however, assessed the interactions in a bilateral manner, a nature of interactions, which occurs rarely, if at all, in nature. Here, we investigated how Arabidopsis thaliana responds to the presence of different single AHL molecules and their combinations. We assumed that

The ability of human enteric pathogens to colonize plants and use them as alternate hosts is now well established. Salmonella, similarly to phytobacteria, appears to be capable of producing the plant hormone auxin via an indole-3-pyruvate decarboxylase (IpdC), a key enzyme of the IPyA pathway. A deletion of the Salmonella ipdC significantly reduced auxin synthesis in laboratory culture. The Salmonella ipdC gene was expressed on root surfaces of Medicago truncatula. M. truncatula auxin-responsive GH3::GUS reporter was activated by the wild type Salmonella, and not but the ipdC mutant, implying

Xenorhabdus is a bacterial symbiont of entomopathogenic Steinernema nematodes and is pathogenic for insects. Its life cycle involves a stage inside the insect cadaver, in which it competes for environmental resources with microorganisms from soil and the insect gut. Xenorhabdus is, thus, a useful model for identifying new interbacterial competition systems. For the first time, in an entomopathogenic bacterium, Xenorhabdus doucetiae strain FRM16, we identified a cdi-like locus. The cdi loci encode contact-dependent inhibition (CDI) systems composed of proteins from the two-partner secretion (TP

Pseudomonas protegens strain Pf-5 is a rhizosphere bacterium that suppresses soilborne plant diseases and produces at least seven different secondary metabolites with antifungal properties. We derived mutants of Pf-5 with single and multiple mutations in biosynthesis genes for seven antifungal metabolites: 2,4-diacetylphoroglucinol (DAPG), pyrrolnitrin, pyoluteorin, hydrogen cyanide, rhizoxin, orfamide A, and toxoflavin. These mutants were tested for inhibition of the pathogens Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. pisi. Rhizoxin, pyrrolnitrin, and DAPG were found to be primar

Iron (Fe) is an essential element for most living organisms. To acquire sparingly soluble Fe from the rhizosphere, rice roots rely on two Fe acquisition pathways. The first of these pathways involves Fe(III) chelators specific to graminaceous plants, the mugineic acid family phytosiderophores, and the second involves absorption of Fe(2+). Key components in this response include enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of deoxymugineic acid (OsNAS1, OsNAS2, OsNAAT1, and OsDMAS1), the deoxymugineic acid efflux transporter (TOM1), the Fe(III)-deoxymugineic acid transporter (OsYSL15), and Fe(2+) trans

Increasing evidence indicates that volatile compounds emitted by bacteria can influence the growth of other organisms. In this study, the volatiles produced by three different strains of Burkholderia ambifaria were analysed and their effects on the growth of plants and fungi, as well as on the antibiotic resistance of target bacteria, were assessed. Burkholderia ambifaria emitted highly bioactive volatiles independently of the strain origin (clinical environment, rhizosphere of pea, roots of maize). These volatile blends induced significant biomass increase in the model plant Arabidopsis thali

A collection of 905 bacterial isolates from the rhizospheres of healthy avocado trees was obtained and screened for antagonistic activity against Dematophora necatrix, the cause of avocado Dematophora root rot (also called white root rot). A set of eight strains was selected on the basis of growth inhibitory activity against D. necatrix and several other important soilborne phytopathogenic fungi. After typing of these strains, they were classified as belonging to Pseudomonas chlororaphis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Pseudomonas putida. The eight antagonistic Pseudomonas spp. were analyzed for

The plant microbiome, an essential component of the plant holobiont, plays key roles in promoting plant growth, enhancing stress tolerance, improving nutrient use efficiency, and mitigating the effects of climate change. Harnessing the plant microbiome would support the transition toward sustainable agriculture by reducing our reliance on chemical inputs and strengthening ecosystem function. Over the past decades, Chinese researchers have made significant progress in plant microbiome research and have gained increasing international recognition. In this review, we summarize major advances in e

Plant-parasitic nematodes cause annual global crop losses, driving the urgent demand for sustainable alternatives to synthetic nematicides to control them. Among biological control agents, Purpureocillium lilacinum and Pochonia chlamydosporia have emerged as the most promising egg-parasitic fungi. However, their comparative biology and deployment contexts remain incompletely understood. This review synthesizes the current knowledge on their taxonomy, ecology, molecular genomics, parasitism mechanisms, biocontrol efficacy and commercial formulations. Both fungi parasitize eggs of economically d

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in wheat remains a major food-safety concern in Cd-contaminated weakly alkaline croplands. Under these conditions, carbonate chemistry may substantially influence Mn-mediated Cd immobilization, yet its role in regulating Cd transformation and soil-to-wheat transfer remains elusive. Here, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the coupled effects of MnCO3 and supplemental carbonate on Cd migration, transformation, and accumulation in a soil-wheat system. The results showed that MnCO3 reduced wheat grain Cd content by 40.1%, and supplemental carbonate further enh

Water management is a key factor affecting crop physiology and rhizosphere microbial ecology in protected agriculture. However, the responses of root development and bacterial community structure to different lower irrigation limits and drip irrigation flow rates in coir substrates remain poorly understood. This study investigated greenhouse-grown tomatoes in the Gobi region under three lower irrigation limits (30%, 50%, and 70% of substrate water-holding capacity) and two drip irrigation flow rates (1 and 2 L·h-1). Substrate moisture, root traits, bacterial community structure, co-occurrence
