OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of several types of rib rings with intercostal muscles for the replacement of trachea in thorax.
METHODS: The surface layer of the third rib of dogs were ripped off and curved into triangular, quadrilateral and polygonal form. These three types of rib rings with intercostal muscles were used to replace a segment of trachea in thorax.

Thoracic outlet syndrome may follow trauma but also may be seen as a result of postural abnormalities of the shoulder girdle. Cervical ribs and other anatomic variations are not prerequisites for the diagnosis, although they may be more common in patients with thoracic outlet syndrome. Two patients of unusual cough related stress fractures of the ribs are presented. Both patients complained of cough and chest pain with respiratory infection, and the initial chest radiographs showed only an infiltrative shadow due to bronchopneumonia in the lung field, however, failed to reveal any definite osseous abnormality of the ribs. An aneurysm in the subclavian artery is relatively uncommon and a cervical rib as the cause is rare. Such a case is presented and the pertinent literature is reviewed. The mechanism of aneurysm formation in a normal vessel wall is discussed.

A case of atypical short-rib polydactyly syndrome (Majewski) with severe cerebral malformations (infundibular hamartoma, Dandy-Walker cyst, aplasia of cerebellar vermis, etc.) is reported. This seems to be the first case so far described in the literature.

The use of a free compound rib-latissimus dorsi osteomusculocutaneous flap is described, for reconstruction of the tibia and soft tissue of the leg. The entire flap depends on the thoracodorsal artery for its blood supply. Dye injection studies of the artery demonstrated continuity between it and the intercostal artery, which is the periosteal vessel of the rib, through a dense network of vascular communications. We describe a baby with external and internal anomalies of the Majewski form of the short rib-polydactyly (SRP) syndromes. Previously unreported abnormal vertebral bodies, delayed ossification of the sternum and fibulae, and a diencephalic hamartoma are noted. These abnormalities and minimal histologic abnormality at the chondro-osseous junction suggest that this syndrome may be heterogeneous or more variable than previously known.

We studied the patterns of rib cage (RC) deformation in six normal subjects breathing against different resistive and elastic inspiratory loads, and we examined, with concentric needle electrodes, the role played by the inspiratory intercostal muscles in the development of these patterns. Four of the subjects deformed their RC to a more elliptical shape during loaded inspirations; RC anteroposterior diameter became smaller and RC lateral diameter became larger. Two stillborn female siblings with short rib-polydactyly syndrome type I (Saldino-Noonan) are described. Besides the characteristic narrow thorax, the pronounced micromelia and a severe dysplasia of the skeleton, a series of organic malformations have been found, in particular in the gastro-intestinal tract and in the urogenital system. The clinical, radiological and anatomo-pathological differences between the four presently known types of the SRP syndrome are described. The importance of postmortem X-ray diagnosis and of genetic counseling (autosomal recessive transmission) is emphasized.

Two male siblings with a short rib-polydactyly syndrome, Majewski type (Majewski syndrome), are reported. To our knowledge, the present report is the first one of siblings each confirmed to be affected by Majewski syndrome, and it may therefore contribute to establishing the mode of inheritance.

In five patients with unilateral wasting of the hand muscles as a result of cervical rib and band, F waves were recorded from the hypothenar muscles following stimulation of the ulnar nerve at the wrist. Twelve healthy control subjects were also examined. F-wave latency was consistently increased in the affected hands of the patients, compared with results from the unaffected and control hands.
