Because of its high fatality rate, listeriosis ranks among the most important infectious diseases worldwide. Although ruminants are known as natural reservoirs for Listeria monocytogenes and a possible source of human listeriosis, studies of the prevalence and risk factors associated with ruminant listeriosis are limited to some developed countries. Therefore, this report describes the development of a real-time PCR targeting the hly gene for the absolute quantification of L. monocytogenes based on circular and linear DNA standards. Results show that the PCR that uses circular plasmid as a tem…

Sheep and goats serve as intermediate hosts for the canine tapeworm Taenia multiceps. The cysts produced by the intermediate stage of parasite are usually found in the cerebral hemispheres of small ruminants, and the resulting disease is commonly known as coenurosis. Coenurosis is clinically manifested in the form of various nervous symptoms, depending on the exact location of the cyst. The variety of neurological symptoms contributes to the complexity of clinical diagnosis and reinforces the need for a more specific and acceptable diagnostic approach. We demonstrated here, for the first time,…

We determined the prevalence and seasonality of infections by Fasciola of goats and bovine species (cattle and water buffalo) in Hubei and Anhui provinces of China. Faecal samples were collected at 2- to 3-month intervals from 200 goats in Hubei province and from 152 bovine species in Anhui province. All faecal samples were examined for the presence of parasites. We determined the nucleotide sequences of the first and second internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1 and ITS-2) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of 39 Fasciola worms from Anhui province. The prevalence of Fasciola infection in goats

In the present study the occurrence, genotypic characteristics and relatedness of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) isolated from 235 fecal samples of diarrheic children (n=75), sheep (n=80), and cattle (n=80) were investigated. Overall, STEC was found in 4%, 61.2%, and 18.7% of diarrheic children, sheep and cattle, respectively. Three of the four STEC isolates from diarrheic children yielded the stx1/ehly profile. The predominant virulence profile of sheep isolates was stx1/ehly (85.2%), but cattle isolates were heterogeneous. Genetic relatedness and diversity of 36 selected isola

BACKGROUND: Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), also known as Goat Plague, occurs in goats, sheep and related species. It is caused by a morbillivirus in the family Paramyxoviridae. In Bangladesh PPR is endemic and it causes serious economic losses. Pathology of PPR has been reported in different goat and sheep breeds from natural and experimental infections. Field results are better indicators of pathogenicity of the circulating virus. The severity of the disease varies with species, breed and immune status of the host. Pathological investigations of natural outbreaks of PPR in Balck Bengal goa…

Nematode infections in ruminants are a major impediment to the profitable production of meat and dairy products, especially for small farms. Gastrointestinal parasitism not only negatively impacts weight gain and milk yield, but is also a major cause of mortality in small ruminants. The current parasite control strategy involves heavy use of anthelmintics that has resulted in the emergence of drug-resistant parasite strains. This, in addition to increasing consumer demand for animal products that are free of drug residues has stimulated development of alternative strategies, including selectiv…

Q fever is an important zoonotic disease caused by infection with the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. Veterinary diagnostic laboratories, including the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) in England and Wales, have traditionally relied on the complement fixation test (CFT) for serological diagnosis. However, Q fever has assumed greater significance in recent years following several large human outbreaks linked to exposure to infected ruminants and it is essential that more reliable tests are introduced to detect the presence of C. burnetii infection in animals. The objective of the current study…

BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes is among the most important foodborne bacterial pathogens due to the high mortality rate and severity of the infection. L. monocytogenes is a ubiquitous organism occasionally present in the intestinal tract of various animal species and faecal shedding by asymptomatically infected livestock poses a risk for contamination of farm environments and raw food at the pre-harvest stages. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and strain diversity of L. monocytogenes in healthy ruminants and swine herds.
RESULTS: Faecal samples from 30 animals per her…

The distribution of tick species able to infest ruminants in Italy is briefly reviewed on the basis of published records and new data obtained in several surveys carried out mainly in northern Italy. The most frequent and abundant tick species found on ruminants throughout Italy are Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor marginatus, the first gradually replacing its association with sheep by the association with wild ruminants. Rhipicephalus bursa was mainly found on cattle while R. turanicus, which is considered one of the most sheep-associated species, was found only on wild boar. Haemaphysalis punc…

A homogeneous extract of a 28-kDa cysteine protease of Fasciola gigantica adult worms was used as the antigen for immunodiagnosis of fasciolosis in cattle, sheep and goats using the Falcon assay screening test enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. This antiprotease assay technique was found to be very rapid and sensitive and may be useful as a supplementary method for the diagnosis of fasciolosis in ruminants.

Following the 1987 Rift Valley fever (RVF) epizootic/epidemic in southern Mauritania, RVF antibody prevalence in small ruminants decreased significantly from 1988 to 1992. In October 1993, at the end of the rainy season, an active RVF virus transmission was detected in several locations of southern Mauritania in small ruminants, in association with an increase of abortions. RVF IgM and IgG antibodies were recorded respectively in 65/390 (16.67%) and 73/390 (18.72%) animals. RVF IgM antibody prevalence was significantly higher in the > or = 2 years old group (26.02%) than in the 0.5- < 2 year o…

Cattle and sheep, grazed successively on the same pasture and given the same supplementary feeding, developed ataxia and several animals became recumbent. Three cattle died within two weeks and the worst affected sheep were killed for laboratory examination. The supplementary diet which consisted largely of a distillery by-product, malt culms, was submitted for mycological examination and fed to two housed lambs. Aspergillus clavatus was cultured from the culms, and both the affected sheep and the housed lambs showed cerebrospinal degenerative changes. The clinical signs and neuropathology wer

Serotypes of 93 Australian isolates of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from diseased domestic animals and poultry and a variety of captive wild birds and animals were determined by double diffusion gel precipitation. Two isolates, from the faeces of a swallow were also examined. Serotypes 1a, 1b and 2 were isolated from pigs and serotypes 1a, 1b, 2, 5, 15 and 21 from sheep or goats. Erysipelas in poultry was attributed to serotypes 1b, 5, 15 and 16. In captive wild birds serotypes 1b, 5, 6, 8, 14, 21 and an isolate reactive with antiserum to strain Seehecht were associated with septicaemic deaths

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an enzootic disease of small ruminants and imposes substantial economic losses. This study estimated the national-level economic burden attributable to PPR in India through meta-analysis based on mortality loss, body-weight loss, treatment cost, opportunity cost of labour, distress sale loss and milk loss (for goats) by systematically synthesizing available evidence. Since several studies reporting per-animal economic losses did not provide measures of dispersion, a reference variability of 15% of the reported loss estimates was assumed for the primary meta-…

Abortion in small ruminants significantly reduces productivity, with pestiviruses recognized as major viral contributors. Due to their broad host range, sheep can be infected not only by classical pestiviruses, such as bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and border disease virus, but also by newly identified pestivirus species. This study aimed to molecularly detect and genetically characterize pestiviruses associated with abortion in small ruminants from eastern Türkiye and to evaluate their epidemiological distribution. Samples from 85 sheep and 14 goats were tested for pestivirus RNA using a…

Bluetongue virus (BTV) and epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) are Culicoides-borne orbiviruses affecting domestic and wild ruminants. Information on their circulation in Namibian wildlife is limited. This study investigated the molecular detection and serotype distribution of BTV and EHDV in wild ruminants from a commercial game farm in the Khomas Region, Namibia, where wildlife and livestock coexist. Between June and September 2019, spleen samples from 62 clinically healthy animals (kudu, oryx, and red hartebeest) were analysed by real-time RT-PCR using pan-BTV and pan-EHDV assays, f…
