[Family-oriented group therapy in the treatment of female patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa--a pilot study].

OBJECTIVES: Family therapy has proven effective in the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) in adolescence. While cognitive-behavioural treatment has been shown to be effective in adult patients suffering from BN, there have been few studies on the effectiveness of psychotherapy in the treatment of adolescents. Since in the majority of AN patients their illness starts in mid-adolescence, and in late adolescence in BN patients, it is crucial to develop and evaluate treatment programmes for these disorders and age groups. In view of these arguments, a programme of group ps

Recurrent abdominal pain in children: evidence from a population-based study that social and familial factors play a major role but not Helicobacter pylori infection.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between social and familial factors, Helicobacter pylori infection and recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) … Analysis by multiple logistic regression demonstrated a clear relationship of RAP with living in a single parent household [odds ratio (OR) 2.9, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.2-6.7], with parental history of peptic ulcer (OR 3.7, 95% CI 1.3-10.4) and with parental history of nonulcer gastrointestinal disorders (OR 5.3, 95% CI 2.1-13.2). By contrast, there …

Characterization of the sialic acid binding activity of transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus by analysis of haemagglutination-deficient mutants.

Transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus (TGEV) agglutinates erythrocytes of several species by virtue of sialic acid binding activity of the surface protein S. We have isolated and characterized five haemagglutination-defective (HAD) mutants. In contrast to the parental virus, the mutants were unable to bind to porcine submandibulary mucin, a substrate rich in sialic acid. Each of the mutants was found to contain a single point mutation in the S protein (Cys155Phe, Met195Val, Arg196Ser, Asp208Asn or Leu209Pro), indicating that these amino acids are affecting the sialic acid binding site. Early mobilization in pediatric critical care and parental psychological outcomes 3-6 months after discharge-a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: Advancements in care for critically ill children have lowered mortality but increased morbidity in survivors. Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) in children including their families (PICS-p) underscores the need for interventions to mitigate long-term effects. Early mobilization shows promising results in adults; however, evidence in pediatrics is limited. Enhanced parental involvement may contribute to improved long-term psychological outcomes. This pilot study examines the impact of an early mobilization program on parental stress and psychological health after admission on a pe

Video Intervention Therapy for primary caregivers in a child psychiatry unit: a randomized feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: During child psychiatry hospitalization, working with the families or attachment figures is a challenge, most of the children who are admitted to these units come from multi-problem families, with limited research in this area. Video feedback (VF) interventions have proved to be a powerful resource to promote parental and child well-being in small children and has been used with parents with a psychiatric condition. Parental Reflective Functioning (PRF) is one of the parental abilities that can be improved with VF and could be especially important in coping with conflict and negati

Pediatric restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder: parent-child pairs.

OBJECTIVE: Although recent publications have reported the occurrence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) in children and adolescents, the literature is relatively limited. The goals of this retrospective study were to (1) apply the recent International Classification of Sleep Disorders 2nd edition (ICSD-2) diagnostic criteria for RLS and PLMD in pediatric cases where periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) 5 per hour were found; (2) review parental history of RLS; and (3) further define the clinical characteristics of RLS and PLMD in a pediatric subgroup

Associated factors with parental pregnancy decision-making and use of consultation after a prenatal congenital heart disease diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) often leads affected families to experience psychological stress. Pediatric cardiology consultation is important in providing parents with sufficient information and reducing their anxiety to make an informed pregnancy decision. Involving a fetal nurse coordinator may optimize fetal anomaly care. Our study aimed to identify factors associated with parental decision-making for choosing to use pediatric cardiology consultations and pregnancy termination. METHODS: From September 2017 to December 2018, all fetal CHD cases diagnosed

Online indirect group treatment for preschool children who stutter-Effects on stuttering severity and the impact of stuttering on child and parents.

BACKGROUND: Stuttering development in preschool children might be influenced by parents' concern, awareness and knowledge. Indirect treatment may therefore be appropriate. Intervention in a group format has been shown to be positive for stuttering and an online procedure increases the accessibility of the intervention. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate whether an online indirect group treatment for children who stutter could increase parents' knowledge and confidence in managing the stuttering, reduce the impact of stuttering on the child and parents as well as reduce stuttering

Effectiveness of parenting education for expectant primiparous women in Asia: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This review evaluated the effectiveness of antenatal parenting education versus usual care for maternal confidence, maternal depressive symptoms, and parenting stress among expectant primiparous women in Asia. INTRODUCTION: Previous reviews on parenting education have mostly examined practices in non-Asian countries and found that no single parenting education program met the needs of all parents. Given that there may be some common characteristics in Asian cultures, such as grandparents' involvement with child care, this review focused on specific interventions in determining the …

Paediatrician's guide to post-operative care for functionally univentricular CHD: a review.

IMPORTANCE: Single ventricle CHD affects about 5 out of 100,000 newborns, resulting in complex anatomy often requiring multiple, staged palliative surgeries. Paediatricians are an essential part of the team that cares for children with single ventricle CHD. These patients often encounter their paediatrician first when a complication arises, so it is critical to ensure the paediatrician is knowledgeable of these issues to provide optimal care. OBSERVATIONS: We reviewed the subtypes of single ventricle heart disease and the various palliative surgeries these patients undergo. We then searched t

Maternal exacerbating and protective factors that shape the prevalence and severity of child attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder: a narrative review.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a widely prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that affects millions of children and adolescents in the U.S. Despite the growing number of diagnoses, the maternal exacerbating and protective factors influencing ADHD symptom severity in offspring remain largely understudied. This narrative review examines the interplay between genetic and epigenetic factors, focusing on specific single nucleotide polymorphisms, polygenic risk scores for ADHD and comorbidities, mitochondrial DNA haplotypes, and X-linked inheritance. Key epigenetic influences inc

Psychological distress in the neonatal intensive care unit: a meta-review.

INTRODUCTION: Parental psychological distress (PD) (anxiety, depression, stress and post-traumatic stress syndrome) can adversely affect parents' own physical and mental health as well as their children's long-term health and development. Numerous studies have addressed PD in mothers of infants admitted to NICU, with interventions proposed, but few have addressed the impact on fathers or other family members. The present review examined systematic reviews that addressed PD in NICU and potential interventions. METHODS: A meta-review was performed by searching various databases between 2000 and
