A Bioinspired Multifunctional Adhesive-Tactile E-Skin Enabled for Adaptive Grasping and Slip Detection.

Robotic grasping faces a fundamental trade-off between strong adhesion and easy, rapid release, particularly when handling fragile or heavy objects. While thermoresponsive tunable adhesives have been developed to decouple this conflict by enabling tunable adhesion via temperature changes, the lack of real-time tactile feedback limits adaptive control during dynamic manipulation. Inspired by the adhesive-tactile synergy observed in tree frog toe pads, we present a multifunctional electronic skin (e-skin) that integrates a temperature-regulated adhesive layer with a tactile perception layer for

The Impacts of Seasonal Factors on Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition driven by immune system dysfunction, genetic predisposition and environmental factors. Patients with psoriasis experience a well-known clinical phenomenon of 'winter severity and summer relief', in which seasonal environmental factors play critical roles in the onset and progression of psoriasis. These factors include temperature, humidity, infection, light exposure and psychological stress. Seasonal changes in temperature and humidity can compromise skin barrier function and exacerbate inflammatory responses, thereby worsening psoriasis sympt

Skin vascular reactivity in healthy subjects: influence of hormonal status.

To investigate the influence of the hormonal status on skin vascular reactivity, 18 males, 18 women using oral contraceptives (oc), 17 premenopausal, and 18 postmenopausal women were studied. Finger skin temperature (FST, in degrees C) and laser Doppler flux (LDF, in perfusion units) were measured during heating (45 degrees C water bath) and cooling (15 degrees C) followed by a subsequent recovery period. Maximal heat-induced vasodilation was significantly higher in women using oc and in premenopausal women when compared with males. During cooling, FST and LDF were significantly higher in male…

Extracellular and intracellular carbon dioxide concentration as a function of temperature in the toad Bufo marinus.

Previous studies of reptiles and amphibians have shown that changing the body temperature consistently produces transient changes in the respiratory exchange ratio (RE) and, hence, changes in whole-body CO2 stores, and that the extracellular fluid compartment contributes to the temperature-related changes in CO2 stores. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the intracellular fluid compartment contributes to the changes in CO2 stores in undisturbed resting cane toads. Increasing body temperature from 10 to 30 degrees C temporarily elevated RE, and returning body temperature to 10 d

Thermographic Behaviour of the Orbicularis Oris Muscle Under Different Provocative Tests.

BACKGROUND: Infrared thermography is an objective method for investigating muscle functioning, enabling inferences about physiology and therapeutics. This noninvasive and non-ionising imaging diagnostic method allows real-time visualisation of the vascular and musculoskeletal systems through skin microcirculation dynamics. It transforms information about the human body's thermal radiation, captured via infrared radiation, into an analysable image. OBJECTIVE: To describe the thermographic behaviour of the orbicularis oris muscle during sustained contraction and chewing tasks. METHODS: The stu

Interoception and autonomic nervous system reflexes thermoregulation.

Important conceptual changes concerning human thermoregulation have occurred in the last decade. While the hypothalamus maintains its central role in sensing core temperature and providing connectivity to orchestrate heat loss and cold defense autonomic neuronal mechanisms, it is now regarded as one of multiple, independent thermoeffector pathways that control core body temperature. Recent research in primate central and peripheral thermosensitivity has emphasized the importance of temperature-activated transient receptor potential (TRP) channels and afferent neuronal pathways from peripheral

Individualized analysis of skin thermosensory thresholds and sensitivity in heat-sensitive people with multiple sclerosis.

We investigated whether and how multiple sclerosis (MS) alters thresholds for perceiving increases and decreases in local skin temperature, as well as the sensitivity to progressively greater temperature stimuli, amongst heat-sensitive people with MS. Eleven MS patients (5 M/6 F; 51.1 ± 8.6 y, EDSS 5.7 ± 1.9) and 11 healthy controls (CTR; 7 M/4 F; 50.3 ± 9.0 y) performed warm and cold threshold tests on a hairy skin site, on both sides of the body. They also underwent a thermosensitivity test where they rated (visual analogue scale) perceived magnitude of 4 local skin stimuli (i.e. 22, 26, 34,…

Bioinspired Epidermal Electrode With Excellent Environmental Tolerance and Adhesion for Robust Electrophysiological Monitoring.

Flexible epidermal electrodes often suffer from performance degradation under harsh conditions, such as high humidity, low temperature, and accelerated aging. Drawing inspiration from the bicontinuous structure of coral reef exoskeletons, we developed a bio-mimetic conformal dry electrode (CGAg@PUA) that integrates a highly conductive skeleton with an adhesive matrix. Gravity-driven self-deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the lower electrode surface creates planar bicontinuous conductive paths. The PUA matrix, featuring polydimethylsiloxane soft segments, offers superior elasticity,

Avoiding harm in pediatric heatstroke: Lessons from a case of ice-related frostbite.

BACKGROUND: Heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency characterized by a core body temperature exceeding 40 °C (104°F). Prompt and effective cooling is critical to prevent multiorgan failure and death. However, aggressive cooling techniques, if improperly applied, may lead to iatrogenic complications. We present a pediatric case of severe frostbite injury resulting from direct ice pad application during emergency treatment for heatstroke. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-month-old infant was found unconscious after being left unattended in a parked car and was diagnosed with severe heatstroke

Biophysical and ultrasonographic changes of acute Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis skin lesions in comparison with uninvolved skin: A possible tool for non-invasive early detection and treatment outcome assessment.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a skin disease caused by intracellular protozoa, which is endemic in Iran. The goal of this study was to compare biophysical characteristics in CL lesions with uninvolved skin. Stratum corneum hydration, transepidermal water loss, surface friction, pH, sebum, melanin, erythema, temperature, elasticity parameters (R0, R2, and R5), thickness and echo-density of epidermis and dermis were measured on the active erythematous indurated part of a typical CL lesion in 20 patients, and compared with the same location on the other side of the body as control. Paired t-tes
