In vivo corneal confocal microscopy in keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the corneas of keratoconic subjects using in vivo confocal microscopy. METHODS: Slit scanning confocal microscopy was … f stromal haze and reflectivity, which appeared to be related to the presence of apical scarring on slit lamp examination. A grading scale was devised to quantify the levels of haze. This scale was shown to provide a measure of the level of scarring present. The anterior keratocyte density (AKD) and posterior keratocyte density were 19% lower (p < 0.0001) a …

Rotational slit-beam marking: an advanced manual corneal astigmatic marking method for toric intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy of an advanced manual corneal astigmatic marking method for toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS: From 52 patients, 52 eyes with cataracts and corneal astigmatism were included. The target axis of the toric IOL was marked with the new manual marking method preoperatively and with the Zeiss CALLISTO Eye image-guided system intraoperatively. For the manual method, a slit-lamp with a minimum rotation angle of 5 degrees was used and rotated to the meridian of the toric IOL and incision axes. The relative rotational and vertical deviation of the IOL

Unilateral vision loss associated with corneal opacity and posterior lens luxation in the right eye of a Thoroughbred gelding: Case report.

A 15-year-old Thoroughbred gelding was presented for examination due to chronic corneal opacity in the right eye, which had been noted for several years. An ophthalmic evaluation revealed dense, irregular corneal opacity; an absence of the direct pupillary light reflex; and a positive dazzle reflex. Fluorescein staining was negative and cytology of a corneal conjunctival swab identified nucleated squamous epithelial cells, but no inflammatory cells. Slit-lamp examination failed to visualize intraocular structure, and the lesion was deemed to be chronic and irreversible. An obstacle-avoidance t

The importance of optical coherence tomographic sectioning in a case with unilateral subtle visual disturbance related to a vertical intraretinal hyperreflective line.

A 60-year-old otherwise healthy man presented with the complaint of missing letters while reading with his right eye. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 10/10 in both eyes. Slit-lamp examination was unremarkable, and the intraocular pressure was within normal range bilaterally. Multimodal imaging was performed, and spectral domain and swept source optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed a foveolar vertically oriented intraretinal hyperreflective line (IHL) in the right eye. Microperimetric examination revealed a lower fixation stability and macular integrity in the right eye compared

Repair of Descemet's membrane detachment following inadvertent intrastromal viscoelastic injection for hypotony: anterior and posterior approaches.

Descemet's membrane (DM) detachment is a significant, if rare, risk of intracameral injection of viscoelastic to treat hypotony after glauco … ed in the operating theatre, while the other had posterior drainage through the DM performed on the slit lamp. Both cases had complete resolution with a good visual outcome and preservation of the glaucoma surgery. Management of this type of detachment requires close coordination between corneal and glaucoma specialists, and the surgical option selected sho …

Distinguishing midzonal iris pigment epithelial cyst from adenoma and ciliary body melanoma.

A 49-year old male with corrected visual acuity of 20/25 OD and 20/20 OS was found to have an asymptomatic dark iris mass OD with suspicion for ciliary body melanoma. Predilation slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed a well-circumscribed brown round mass arising posterior to the iris, presumably from the ciliary body; however, postdilation demonstrated an extended fusiform mass of the iris pigment epithelium (IPE). By anterior segment imaging, the well-circumscribed IPE mass was cystic and measured 1440 microns in thickness peripherally predilation and 300 microns in thickness postdilation. There w
