Social isolation can have long-term effects on brain development and behavior and increases the risk of developing clinical conditions, including anxiety disorders. One modulator of the stress response is gamma-aminobutyric acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter synthesized by glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). This study examined sex differences in behavior and GAD expression following prolonged social isolation beginning in adolescence in Long Evans rats. Males and females were equally divided into group-housed (GH) and socially isolated conditions on Postnatal Day 28 (n = 8 per group). Beginn

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is often described as both a driver and a consequence of poor health, social exclusion and economic marginalisation. The present protocol provides a detailed description of the study Examining the health situation of homeless people in Berlin: a retrospective analysis of data from the health centre for the homeless of the Jenny De la Torre Foundation from 2006 to 2020 (GIG study). The primary objective of the GIG study is to describe and analyse the social and health situation of homeless people in Berlin.
METHODS: A retrospective secondary data analysis of an anonymo

This paper discusses the economic, legal, moral, and political difficulties in developing drugs for the developing world. It argues that large, global pharmaceutical companies have social responsibilities to the developing world, and that they may exercise these responsibilities by investing in research and development related to diseases that affect developing nations, offering discounts on drug prices, and initiating drug giveaways. However, these social responsibilities are not absolute requirements and may be balanced against other obligations and commitments in light of economic, social,

PURPOSE: Adults who stutter (AWS) show a maladaptive attentional focus when speaking under socially stressful conditions and at the same time, attentional focus has shown to impact articulatory control in this population. The purpose of this study was to determine the predictive factors of social anxiety and attentional focus on articulatory control in AWS compared to a group of adults who do not stutter (ANS), varying in social anxiety levels.
METHOD: Seventeen AWS and 23 ANS repeated sentences in a virtual reality environment under a low- and high- socially stressful condition. Attentional

This paper focuses on the role of 'social support' in the experience of fibromyalgia (a musculoskeletal pain disorder) in South Africa. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used to collect narratives from 15 participants. Sources of social support constitute important mechanisms for coping with the illness experience of fibromyalgia. In providing a space for consultation and validation of the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, and the person living with the condition, people giving support fulfil a critical role in shaping the experience. The findings show how support from family, partners, and pe

Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS; 22q11.2 deletion syndrome) results from a genetic mutation that increases risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We compared Theory of Mind (ToM) skills in 63 individuals with VCFS (25% with an ASD diagnosis) and 43 typically developing controls, and investigated the relationship of ToM to reciprocal social behavior. We administered a video-based task to assess mentalizing at two sites University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University. The videos depicted interactions representing complex mental

This article presents a framework for evolving a society that nurtures the health and well-being of its population. We review evidence that adverse social conditions, including poverty, conflict, discrimination, and other forms of social rejection, contribute immensely to our most ubiquitous psychological, behavioral, and health problems. We then enumerate the ways that effective family and school prevention programs could ameliorate much of the social adversity leading to these problems. The widespread and effective implementation of these programs-in primary care, social services, and educat…

This study examined cognitive flexibility and social responsiveness in children and adolescents with Tourette Syndrome (TS). Thirty one subjects with TS were compared to 32 age-matched healthy controls. Assessments included semi-structured interviews to assess psychopathology, parent-rated Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) and a brief neuropsychological battery selected as measures of cognitive flexibility. Completion time for both Trail Making Tests (TMT-A and TMT-B) were significantly longer for TS group than controls, however the difference in perseverative errors on Wisconsin Card Sorting

BACKGROUND: Hoarding is defined as the excessive collection and failure to discard possessions of apparently little value, leading to clutter, distress, and disability. Although patients with hoarding typically may feel ludicrous for not discarding useless, and sometimes bizarre, possessions, we are not aware of any previous description of patients displaying hoarding as a result of social anxiety.
METHOD: Single case report.
RESULTS: In this article, we describe a patient with severe social anxiety disorder who displayed hoarding as a direct consequence of social anxiety-related beliefs and

Visual processing of biological motion (BM) produced by living organisms is of immense value for successful daily-life activities and, in particular, for adaptive social behavior and nonverbal communication. Investigation of BM perception in neurodevelopmental disorders related to autism, preterm birth, and genetic conditions substantially contributes to our understanding of the neural mechanisms underpinning the extraordinary tuning to BM. The most prominent research outcome is that patients with daily-life deficits in social cognition are also compromised on visual body motion processing. Th

Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is known to be involved in the sensitized locomotor responses and drug-seeking behavior to psychostimulants. However, little is known about the contribution of CaMKII signaling in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) in natural rewards such as social interaction. The present experiments explored the implication of CaMKII signaling in drug versus natural reward. In the NAc of rats expressing cocaine or social interaction conditioned place preference (CPP), αCaMKII activation was induced in those expressing social interaction but not cocaine CPP. In

Although many studies have documented patterns of emotional distress in persons undergoing radiation treatment for cancer, there have been few controlled evaluations of counseling or psychotherapy outcomes with these persons. In this research, the effects of cognitive-behavioral and socially supportive group therapy were evaluated. A total of 72 depressed cancer patients were randomly assigned to one of three conditions--cognitive-behavioral treatment, social support, or a no-treatment control condition. Before and after intervention and at 6-month followup, study participants were individuall

In our environments, we encode surrounding spatial information using egocentric (subject-to-object) and allocentric (object-to-object) reference frames. Spatial encoding, however, occurs in an environment populated by more than just “objects” but also by people, and this social information can have a significant impact on our spatial memory. Here, we investigated how implicit social information influences spatial encoding by designing a study with an explicit spatial task and implicit social cues. Participants performed a task where they memorized triads of geometric objects and provided egoce

The social brain hypothesis predicts that the relative size of specific brain regions is driven by the cognitive capacity required to manage complex (social) situations. Spiders are intriguing models to test this hypothesis, as sociality is rare in this usually solitary and aggressive group. Here, we used microCT to compare the central nervous system and brain volumes between social and solitary females of the species in two taxonomic groups, huntsman and crab spiders. Overall, we found no difference in relative CNS and brain volume between social and solitary species. However, social huntsman

BACKGROUND: Social cognitive deficits are common across many psychiatric conditions and contribute to broader social dysfunction. One hypothesized mechanism involves altered basic visual processing, which may disrupt the perception of low-level social cues and, in turn, compromise broader social cognitive processes. Here, we examined relations between basic visual processing and different levels of social cognition in a transdiagnostic youth sample.
METHODS: A sample of 148 youth, ranging from healthy individuals to individuals with neuropsychiatric diagnoses and significant social dysfunctio

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by core anhedonic symptoms, including pervasive dampening of positive responsiveness and social interactions mediated by the habitual avoidance of strategies involving engagement with positive emotions. Current MDD treatments primarily aim at rebalancing the regulation of negative emotions and at modulating limbic activity. Understanding neural deficits in positive social regulation is critical for developing therapeutic interventions for MDD and social anhedonia symptoms. We used fMRI to assess positive social emotion upregulation in 40 women,

Social touch plays a vital role in human development, communication, and general well-being. However, the mechanisms underlying how social touch elicits pleasant or aversive responses are poorly understood. Furthermore, it remains unclear how alterations in sensory processing, at both the perceptual level (i.e. detection and discrimination of stimuli) and behavioral level (i.e. response to stimuli), shape the experience of social touch, in addition to contextual factors such as gender and culture. In the current study, we used vibrotactile psychophysics and a novel social touch paradigm to ass
