The past, present and future of Social Psychiatry.

In psychiatry, tensions have often arisen between biological and social approaches, despite their interconnection. Social psychiatry has evolved alongside changing understandings of mental health and its ties to broader social and geopolitical determinants. Global factors such as economic inequality, migration, and social exclusion are increasingly recognized as key influences on mental health outcomes. Nonetheless, challenges like stigma, lack of access, and resource limitations persist. The Biopsychosocial Model remains central to social psychiatry, offering an integrated framework that cons

Social Influences in Sequential Decision Making.

People often make decisions in a social environment. The present work examines social influence on people's decisions in a sequential decision-making situation. In the first experimental study, we implemented an information cascade paradigm, illustrating that people infer information from decisions of others and use this information to make their own decisions. We followed a cognitive modeling approach to elicit the weight people give to social as compared to private individual information. The proposed social influence model shows that participants overweight their own private information rel

Modeling the Associations Between Personality, Cognition, and Social Determinants in Relation to Substance Use Disorder Severity in Community Adults.

OBJECTIVE: To develop more effective intervention strategies for substance use disorder (SUD), it is essential to create models that evaluate the relative influence of various risk factors. This study constructed an integrated biopsychosocial model to examine the associations of different risk vulnerability domains with SUD severity. METHOD: 251 community adults aged 18-55 (female = 48.2%; White = 64.1%, Black = 26.7%, Asian American = 8.0%, American Indian/Alaska Native = 2.0%, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander = 1.6%, Hispanic =7.6%), completed clinical diagnostic interviews, neuropsychologi

Development and Validation of the Digital Mentalizing Questionnaire: A Multidimensional Self-Report for Online Social Networks.

Digital interactions are increasingly central to human social life, yet existing measures of mentalizing-defined as the capacity to interpret one's own and others' mental states-are primarily designed for face-to-face contexts and fail to capture the unique cognitive-affective demands of online social networks. This research introduces the Digital Mentalizing Questionnaire (DMQ), the first multidimensional, theory-driven instrument specifically developed to assess mentalizing processes in digital environments. Across three studies (N1 = 278, N2 = 375, N3 = 341; participants in Studies 1, 2, an

Why are you looking at me like that? Intolerance of uncertainty and emotional face processing in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is a prevalent mental disorder characterized by altered processing of social stimuli. Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU) has been linked to social anxiety and influences the perception of social information. Yet, the neural correlates of IU in SAD during the processing of emotional stimuli remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: In this study, fMRI data were collected from 25 individuals with SAD and 25 healthy controls (HC), who completed a face processing task. Differential associations between the IU subdimensions prospective IU, inhibitory IU, and

Activity budgets, social behavior, and fitness outcomes associated with a baboon group fusion.

Many primates exhibit female philopatry and live in stable, female-bonded social groups. Permanent group fusions are rarely documented in th … , after three months, patterns in female grooming were comparable to other groups, indicating rapid social integration. With the caveat that our sample size was limited, we observed no detectable fitness-related costs of group fusion in terms of birth rates or offspring survival, and adult female mortality was low following the fusion. These results demonstrate the …

Dissociated in Anticipation, Common in Feedback: Neuroelectrophysiological Mechanisms of Social-Motivational Processing in Bivalent Evaluation Fears.

The Bivalent Evaluation Fear Hypothesis posits that fear of positive evaluation (FPE) and fear of negative evaluation (FNE) are two independent core characteristics of social anxiety. However, whether they rely on dissociable and/or shared neural mechanisms in the processing of social motivation remains unclear. By employing the Social Incentive Delay Task combined with EEG, we found that during the anticipation phase, individuals with high FPE exhibited "generalized over-engagement toward evaluative situations"-enhanced conflict monitoring (N2) and motivational preparation (CNV) in response t

Predictive Modeling of Sensory Recovery Following Peripheral Nerve Injury: Evaluating the Combined Influence of Surgical, Biological, and Social Factors.

BACKGROUND: Recovery from peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) is influenced by a range of biological, social, and clinical factors. However, the relative contributions of these domains to sensory recovery remain unclear. The objective of this study is to evaluate the predictive value of biological, social, and injury/surgical factors on sensory recovery after PNI, using logistic regression modelsMethods:A retrospective review of 169 patients who underwent upper extremity peripheral nerve reconstruction between May 2013 and May 2023 was conducted. Functional sensory recovery was measured using stat

Finding Well-Being in the Stands: High-Involvement Fandom and Subjective Well-Being Among Female Spectators in Korea's Record-Breaking KBO League.

This study examines the psychological and social processes through which high-involvement sports fandom is associated with the subjective well-being of female spectators in South Korea's professional KBO baseball league. Utilizing a secondary qualitative analysis informed by grounded-theory coding procedures, we investigate the dynamic processes, interaction strategies, and sociopsychological factors through which female spectators experience high-involvement fandom and how this engagement relates to their well-being. Data originally collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews with n

Disparities in access to health and support services for people with disability in Australia: a scoping review of the structural social determinants.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inequities in health and social services exacerbate barriers for disadvantaged groups within the disability community, leading to poorer health outcomes and diminished quality of life. We aimed to evaluate how structural determinants function to shape disparities in access to health and support services for people with disability. METHODS: We followed Arksey and O’Malley’s methodological framework. A comprehensive search strategy was implemented across five major databases—Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus—focusing on four key concepts: social determinants, dis

Changes in social and human-animal interactions in people with epilepsy during dog-assisted interventions.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder with physical, psychological, and social consequences that can be alleviated by the integration of a service dog in their daily life. Reports showed that various populations benefit from animal-assisted interventions, particularly dog-assisted interventions (DAI). However, to our knowledge, no study has yet examined the effects of DAI on individuals with epilepsy. This study aimed to characterize the interactions of individuals with epilepsy during DAI sessions. Ten adults with epilepsy (five women and five men; mean age: 24.4 ± 3.0 years) participated in th

Multiple traumas and resilience among street children in Haiti: Psychopathology of survival.

In Haiti, as in several developing countries, the phenomenon of street children has become a major public health issue. These children are often victims of traumas and adverse life events. This article aimed to investigate traumas experienced by street children and their coping and resilience strategies used to deal with adversities in a logic of survival, relying on a mixed method approach. A group of 176 street children, aged 7-18 (n = 21 girls), recruited in Port-au-Prince, completed measures assessing PTSD, social support and resilience. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to documen

How active and passive social media interaction influence psychological wellbeing: a dual-mediation model of self-evaluation and social face concern.

INTRODUCTION: Social media has become a central context for social interaction and self-evaluation among young adults. Prior research links social media use to mixed mental health outcomes, yet the psychological mechanisms underlying active versus passive interaction remain insufficiently differentiated and theoretically integrated. Limited attention has been paid to how these engagement styles influence psychological wellbeing through distinct cognitive pathways, and few studies incorporate culturally salient constructs specific to collectivistic contexts. Understanding these mechanisms is cl

Social perception in children with intellectual disabilities: the interpretation of benign and hostile intentions.

A key aspect of social perception is the interpretation of others' intentions. Children with intellectual disabilities (IDs) have difficulty interpreting benign intentions when a negative event occurs. From a cognitive processing perspective, interpreting benign intentions can be challenging because it requires integration of conflicting information, as the social cues accompanying the negative event convey non-hostile intentions. The present study examined how children with ID process conflicting social information in a more diverse set of situational circumstances than was investigated previ

Promoting healthy aging in occupational settings: satisfaction with life as a strategic target in the Semmelweis-EUniWell framework.

The growing burden of aging-related disease and functional decline across Europe underscores the urgent need to optimize aging trajectories … inflammatory regulation, neural and affective processing, psychological resilience and reserve, and social integration and generativity. Collectively, these pathways suggest that SWL reflects the functional integrity of adaptive systems that shape vulnerability to age-related functional decline. We further argue that occupational settings represent a uniquely powerf …
