Conjugated equine estrogen enhances rats' cognitive, anxiety, and social behavior.

The ovarian hormone, 17beta-estradiol (E2), has numerous targets in the body and brain, and can influence cognitive, affective, and social behavior. However, functional effects of commonly prescribed E2-based hormone therapies are less known. The effects of conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) on middle-aged female rats for cognitive (object recognition), anxiety (open field, plus maze), and social (social interaction, lordosis) behavior were compared with vehicle. Our hypothesis that CEE would enhance cognitive, anxiety, and social behavior was supported. CEE improved object recognition, increase…

The effect of online social support on experimental pain.

Ample evidence shows that in-person social support can alleviate both acute and chronic pain complaints. However, less is known about the effectiveness of online social support. Disparities in availability of and access to in-person social support could make online social support a promising and cost-effective alternative. To this end we aimed to compare the effects of online versus in-person social support on pain induced with a cold-pressor task (CPT). Specifically, 62 pain-free female participants immersed their feet in cold water (1) alone, (2) in the physical presence of a supportive othe

Behavioral coping strategies in response to social stress are associated with distinct neuroendocrine, monoaminergic and immune response profiles in mice.

Individual variation in behavioral coping strategies to stress implies that animals may have a distinct physiological adaptation to stress; … inergic and immune activity. Male mice were subjected to social stress. Twelve days after the first social interaction, mice were subjected to a second identical social stress interaction. Behavior was videotaped and assessed during both sessions. One hour after the final social interaction, serum was collected for corticosterone and adrenaline concentrations and br …

Inhibitory interneurons mediate autism-associated behaviors via 4E-BP2.

Translational control plays a key role in regulation of neuronal activity and behavior. Deletion of the translational repressor 4E-BP2 in mi … stereotyped behaviors (self-grooming and marble burying), sociability (3-chamber social and direct social interaction tests), and communication (ultrasonic vocalizations in pups). We found that deletion of 4E-BP2 in GABAergic inhibitory neurons, defined by Gad2, resulted in impairments in social interaction and vocal communication. In contrast, deletion of 4E-BP2 i …

Visual acuity in adults with Asperger's syndrome: no evidence for "eagle-eyed" vision.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are defined by criteria comprising impairments in social interaction and communication. Altered visual perception is one possible and often discussed cause of difficulties in social interaction and social communication. Recently, Ashwin et al. suggested that enhanced ability in local visual processing in ASC was due to superior visual acuity, but that study has been the subject of methodological criticism, placing the findings in doubt. METHODS: The present study investigated visual acuity thresholds in 24 adults with Asperger's syndrome and compar…

Dimensions of religiosity in old age: accounting for variation in types of participation.

Research on religiosity and aging has focused more on church attendance than on the religious role and the strength of beliefs and the extent of private devotions. This study of 123 older West Texans examines the degree to which nine variables account for variation in both organized religious activities and private religious behavior. These include three social activity and interaction variables, three religion variables, and three personal variables (health, age, and income). Strength of religious conviction proved to be the strongest predictor of both types of religious participation. Multip

Causal Dynamics of Social Gaze in Primate Prefrontal-Amygdala Networks Revealed by Dynamic Bayesian Modeling.

Social gaze is a fundamental channel of primate communication, shaping dynamic interactions and fostering mutual understanding. While prior studies have mapped the behavioral correlates of social gaze across the prefrontal-amygdala circuits, the causal architecture of these interactions remains poorly understood. Here, we develop an algorithm to integrate independently recorded sessions from male macaques into "super-sessions", validated using ground-truth synthetic data, enabling the reconstruction of simultaneous multi-area recordings aligned to matched gaze sequences. Applying Dynamic Bayes

Embedded dyads: How the personal network relates to linguistic accommodation.

Language serves as a key medium through which individuals express and negotiate social belonging. By observing individuals' behavior within an interaction, we can access the relational stance they adopt and infer the social relationships that link the two interactants. This process is particularly studied within the framework of the Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT). According to CAT, speakers tend to align linguistically with their interlocutors to signal social proximity. Yet, most analyses remain focused on the psychological and dyadic levels, without considering the broader social i

Healthy ageing in urban settings: neighbourhood environments modify the association between intrinsic capacity and social participation among older adults in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on how intrinsic capacity and environment interact to sustain social participation remains limited. We examined how intrinsic capacity, neighbourhood environments and their interaction relate to social participation among urban adults aged ≥50 years in Brazil. METHODS: This cross-sectional study comprised 5068 urban residents aged ≥50 years from the nationally representative 2015-16 Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Intrinsic capacity was assessed as a five-domain composite (cognitive, psychological, sensory, locomotor, vitality). Environment was measured using a 15

Autism-like behaviors regulated by the serotonin receptor 5-HT2B in the dorsal fan-shaped body neurons of Drosophila melanogaster.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction and repetitive stereotyped behaviors. Previous studies have reported an association of serotonin or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) with ASD, but the specific receptors and neurons by which serotonin modulates autistic behaviors have not been fully elucidated. METHODS: RNAi-mediated knockdown was done to destroy the function of tryptophan hydroxylase (Trh) and all the five serotonin receptors. Given that ubiquitous knockdown of 5-HT2B showed significant defects in social b…

Nor weak ties, nor strong ties: Personal support networks and relations between autistic peers.

The aim of this study is to analyze egocentric social networks of 31 autistic adults in Québec (Canada). We examined the composition of thei … et of the data from the qualitative prompts. Three main themes were identified: (1) interference in social interactions, (2) mutual acknowledgment, and (3) social engagement in the community. Most participants (n = 21) mentioned autistic peers, but although these peers may have provided support, participants rarely identified them as being part of their proximal per …

Social Connectedness, Perceived Isolation, and Dementia: Does the Social Environment Moderate the Relationship Between Genetic Risk and Cognitive Well-Being?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This study examined whether the social environment moderates the relationship between the APOE e4 allele and cognitive functioning. DESIGN AND METHODS: The Aging, Demographics, and Memory Study (ADAMS) data and multinomial logistic regression models were used to investigate these relationships for a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults aged 70 and older (n = 779). RESULTS: Living alone (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 5.814; p = .000) and self-reported loneliness (RRR = 1.928, p = .049) were associated with a greater risk of cognitive difficulty. Living arrangeme

The Impact of Prematurity on Social and Emotional Development.

Behavioral and emotional problems are one of the most frequent chronic conditions diagnosed among children born prematurely. The high prevalence of these pathologies is a matter of concern because of their impact on family life, school performance, and social interaction, but also because of current limitations in early detection and access to treatment. This is a review of the various mechanisms by which premature birth affects social and emotional development, and a discussion about strategies that may help support emotional and social development in this high-risk population.

The Expression and Transfer of Valence Associated with Social Conformity.

Consensus seeking - abandoning one's own judgment to align with a group majority - is a fundamental feature of human social interaction. Notably, such striving for majority affiliation often occurs in the absence of any apparent economic or social gain, suggesting that achieving consensus might have intrinsic value. Here, using a simple gambling task, in which the decisions of ostensible previous gamblers were indicated below available options on each trial, we examined the affective properties of agreeing with a group majority by assessing the trade-off between social and non-social currencie…

Choosing social partners: how old age and anticipated endings make people more selective.

Carstensen's selectivity theory, which explains age-related change in social behavior in terms of emotion conservation and increasing discrimination among social partners, was investigated in 2 studies. In Study 1, 80 people aged 14 to 95 classified descriptions of people according to their similarities as social partners in terms of affect anticipated in the interaction and that this dimension was most important to older people. Study 2 showed how anticipated social endings influence partner selection: 380 people aged 11 to 92 chose familiar or novel partners under unspecified and ending cond

Nature contact, exposure, connection and prosocial behaviour in Chinese primary school children: A latent profile and cross-lagged panel analysis.

Prosocial behaviour is an important indicator of children's social development and well-being. Although nature-related factors have been associated with prosocial behaviour, evidence from childhood remains more limited and it is unclear whether these associations vary across patterns of nature interaction. This study examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations among nature contact, exposure, connection and prosocial behaviour in primary school children. Study 1 used latent profile and network analyses with 579 children (280 girls, Mage = 10.43, SD = 1.59). Profile-specific associati
