Beyond Neighbors: Social Capital and Self-Empowerment Among Older Adults Diagnosed with HIV Late.

Older people with HIV (those aged ≥ 50 years) are living longer due to advances in HIV and chronic disease treatment. Social capital is often associated with better HIV clinical outcomes, such as high adherence to medication rates. However, this group is experiencing disrupted social connectedness related to shrinking social networks, which may impact their quality of life. We conducted in-depth interviews via web conferencing among a sample of (n = 18) older people diagnosed with HIV late and attending care at two HIV clinics in New Haven, CT, between February 2020 and July 2021. We employed

Armed against Unhappiness: Psychoanalytic Grammars in Buenos Aires.

Psychoanalysis has produced an ensemble of institutions, expertise, procedures, and practices for rendering the psychoanalytic subject legible and, through this, psychic life as an actionable site of intervention, dislocation, and struggle. This article examines how diverse psychoanalytic communities in Buenos Aires have produced unique grammars that influence how individuals articulate ideas about health and well-being. Descriptive, culturally specific, historically informed, and always provisional, this grammar is empirically grounded in lived experience. Through presenting several case stud

Brief Report: Atypical Visual Exploration in Autism Spectrum Disorder Cannot be Attributed to the Amygdala.

Prior studies have emphasized the contribution of aberrant amygdala structure and function in social aspects of autism. However, it remains largely unknown whether amygdala dysfunction directly impairs visual attention and exploration as has been observed in people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Here, gaze patterns were directly compared between a rare amygdala lesion patient and adults with ASD when they freely viewed static images of complex natural scenes. The amygdala lesion patient showed a gaze pattern that was more similar to controls rather than that of the ASD group, which was

Determinants and consequences of sexual networks as they affect the spread of sexually transmitted infections.

Because pathogens spread only within the unique context of a sexual union between people when one person is infectious, the other is susceptible to new infection, and condoms are not used to prevent transmission, the epidemiological study of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is particularly challenging. Social network analysis entails the study of ties among people and how the structure and quality of such ties affect individuals and overall group dynamics. Although ascertaining complete sexual networks is difficult, application of this approach has provided unique insights into the sprea

Translation and validation of a French version of Brown's Support Behaviors Inventory in perinatal health.

This article describes the process used for translation, testing for reliability and validity, and establishing factor structure of a French version of Brown's Support Behaviors Inventory (SBI-Fr). The objective was to provide an adequate self-report measure of satisfaction with social support during the perinatal period for use with a Francophone population in Québec, Canada. When compared with the English version, the French version had similar qualities regarding reliability and validity, but principal component analysis (N = 271) revealed that the SBI-Fr measures two distinct subscales, pe

Social and behavioral factors associated with high-risk sexual behavior among adolescents.

Relationships among risky sexual behaviors, other problem behaviors, and the family and peer context were examined for two samples of adolescents. Many adolescents reported behaviors (e.g., promiscuity or nonuse of condoms) which risked HIV or other sexually transmitted disease infection. Such risky behaviors were significantly intercorrelated. Consistent condom use was rare among those whose behavior otherwise entailed the greatest risk of infection. In both samples, an index of high-risk sexual behavior was significantly related to antisocial behavior, cigarette smoking, and illicit drug or

Where is the problem to be solved? Problem defining and epistemic uncertainties in shared decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Physicians and patients apply different but overlapped knowledge in their contexts to define the divergent problems to solve during cancer treatment. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to identify the knowledge sources of problem defining between physicians and patients in shared decision-making on cancer treatment. METHODS: This study adopted a divided narrative approach and interviewed 32 cancer patients and their paired 16 physicians from two top hospitals in northwestern China. RESULTS: Physicians defined problems by five types of knowledge sources structured in the social system a

Searching for the Pattern: Understanding, Assessing, and Transforming Social Settings.

A historical analysis of systems theory ideas from the biological and physical sciences reveals their infusion into sociology and action-oriented subfields of psychology, including social, organizational, developmental, and community psychology. Constructs and processes are identified that are useful for creating a framework to understand, assess, and transform social settings. The central theoretical concept that surfaces is the emergent pattern of dynamic transactions that communicates critical information and meaning, referred to as "social regularity." This is followed by an examination of

Reactivity to social stress in ethnic minority men.

Repeated exposures to social exclusion, through a process of sensitization, may result in larger responses to experiences of social stress. The current study tested the hypothesis that healthy Moroccan-Dutch men respond stronger to social stress than Dutch controls 1) in daily life, and 2) in an experimental set-up. A general population sample of 50 Moroccan-Dutch and 50 Dutch young adult males were tested with 1) the Experience Sampling Method, a structured diary technique, assessing reactivity to social stress in daily life, and 2) an experimental exposure to social peer evaluation. No group

Neural correlates of self-focused attention in social anxiety.

Socially anxious individuals tend to shift their attention away from external socially threatening cues and instead become highly self-focused. Such heightened self-focused attention has been suggested to be involved in the development and maintenance of social anxiety disorder. This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural correlates of self-focused attention in 16 high socially anxious (HSA) and 16 low socially anxious (LSA) individuals. Participants were instructed to focus their attention either inwardly or outwardly during a simulated social situation. Re

Sexually dimorphic organization of extracellular matrix and perineuronal nets in the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) social brain.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a fundamental component of the central nervous system that shapes neuronal communication, synaptic stability, and plasticity. Among its specialized forms, perineuronal nets (PNN) provide structural support and contribute to the regulation of circuit dynamics. Despite increasing interest in ECM function in the adult brain, its organization across species and sexes remains incompletely understood, particularly in non-traditional rodent models. Prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster), a socially monogamous and biparental rodent, offer a valuable framework to explore

Post-material values and brain drain: how value transformation shapes the migration mindset among highly educated South Asians?

While economic reasons are predominantly considered as drivers of brain drain in the existing literature, the present study demonstrates that migration decisions are substantially shaped by structural misalignments between individuals' value orientations and the institutional, cultural, and social environments of their home countries. Drawing on 25 in-depth interviews and a focus group discussion, the study integrates Bourdieu's theorisations of habitus, field, and taste with Inglehart's theory of post-material value shift to understand how higher education cultivates durable dispositions orie

Desired but Unattained Breastfeeding: A Qualitative Exploration of Maternal Perceptions in a Cultural-Religious Context.

Background: The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, with continued breastfeeding alongside complementary feeding up to two years or beyond. However, many mothers are unable to meet their breastfeeding expectations, resulting in a significant emotional impact shaped by social, cultural, and occupational factors. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore mothers' perceptions and experiences of desired but unattained breastfeeding, with particular attention to its cultural-religious dimension. Methods: A qualitative descriptive stud

Institutional Barriers, Educational Decisions, and the Forging of Migrant Social Identity: Evidence from China's Cross-Regional Enrollment Policies.

The social identity of migrant children is not merely a demographic label but is actively constructed and constrained by institutional structures. In China, a rapidly growing migrant population faces stringent institutional barriers, namely cross-regional enrollment policies with restrictive eligibility conditions, which exclude migrant children from local high school education. This study investigates how these structural factors shape the educational decisions and, consequently, the social identity formation of migrant children. Using data from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey and a cohort-

How to eliminate hepatitis C between people who inject drugs in community services and prisons in Catalonia.

BACKGROUND: The Spanish National Health System, with devolved powers to autonomous communities such as Catalonia, faces significant challenges in controlling viral infections like hepatitis C (HCV) among vulnerable groups, particularly people who inject drugs (PWID), where prisons serve as crucial intervention sites. Catalonia's health authorities have implemented strategies to combat HCV, including direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatments and harm reduction programmes within both community and penitentiary settings. However, substantial barriers persist in achieving full treatment uptake and

Firearm Access and Socio-Structural Factors Related to Suicidality Among Youth With Diverse Sexual, Gender, and Racial Identities.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated rates of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) among youth, particularly multiply marginalized youth, are occurring in the context of youths' access to household firearms. Research examining how perceived access to firearms is related to SI and SA among youth with marginalized identities is limited and often neglects to consider intersectionality. This study explored how intersecting social identities and positions, access to firearms, and socio-structural factors were associated with SI and SA for youth. METHOD: The analytic sample (N = 17,794) included 7-12th

Neurasthenia: a paradigm of social psychopathology in a transitional society.

A particular social aspect of an illness is reflected in an emphasis on those symptoms that the society considers socially detrimental and/or destabilizing. Thus, in the work- and production-oriented society, chronic fatigue, which affects one's productivity and ability to work, becomes a hallmark of neurasthenia or neurasthenia-like syndrome. In a society based on rigid social structures and severely limited possibilities for social change, excessive irritability and outbursts of anger are perceived as a greater threat to the stability of the existing social order, and therefore they come to …
