The effect of social support and parental monitoring on glycaemic control in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

RATIONALE: Glycaemic control is a crucial aspect of managing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Strict glycaemic control has been proven to reduce the long-term complications of the disease. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of parental involvement in diabetes care and social support on glycaemic control in adolescents with T1DM. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 94 adolescents and their parents admitted to a university hospital between January and July 2023 were included in the study. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (PMDC-R) and Parental Mo…

Same sex-attraction as a predictor of suicide and self-harm behaviours: The role of bullying and social support.

Sexual minority youth are at higher risk of self-harming than heterosexual adolescents. Understanding why sexual minority youth are more vulnerable to poor mental health and identifying factors that might buffer against this risk is important for developing targeted interventions. We used the Millennium Cohort Study to investigate whether same-sex attraction at age 14 is associated with suicide attempts and self-harm at age 17. Additionally, we tested whether bullying victimisation might mediate any observed associations, and whether social support might protect against any increased risk. Sex…

Experiences of Affiliate Stigma and Depressive Symptoms in Caregivers of Autistic Children: The Moderating Effect of Social Support.

Caregivers with an autistic child often experience stigma, which can lead to detrimental mental health consequences. Affiliate stigma is the internalization of, and psychological responses to, stigma experienced due to an individual's association with a person who is stigmatized. Social support has been shown to mediate the relationship between affiliate stigma and depression in caregivers of special needs children. However, research on social support as a moderator of this relationship in autistic children has not been completed. We examined the associations between affiliate stigma, social s…

Eliciting social stressors, supports, and determinants of health through the DSM-5 cultural formulation interview.

OBJECTIVE: As recognition of the importance of social determinants of mental health has increased, the limitations of clinical competence-enhancing interventions that do not emphasize this approach have emerged. The Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) is a cultural competence intervention that emerges from a confluence of social medicine and medical anthropology traditions. Limited research has examined how patients respond to CFI questions on social-structural aspects of illness and care to assess whether the CFI adequately elicits information on social determinants of mental health. METHOD

Associations of anxiety and depression with suicide experiences in individuals with and without childhood trauma: The role of social support.

No studies have examined the differences and similarities between individuals with and without experiences of childhood sexual and/or physical abuse in relation to anxiety and depression severity, perceived social support, and suicide experiences. Furthermore, whether the strength of these associations differs between these two groups, and whether the buffering role of perceived social support is equally effective, remain unknown. This study, which was based on 842 British participants, aimed to address these gaps. There were three key findings: i) abused individuals reported significantly mor…

Peer Group Identification as Determinant of Youth Behavior and the Role of Perceived Social Support in Problem Gambling.

Gambling opportunities have increased rapidly during recent years. Previous research shows that gambling is a popular activity among youth, which may contribute to problem gambling. This study examined how social identification with online and offline peer groups associates with youth problem gambling behavior and if perceived social support buffers this relationship. Data were gathered with an online survey with 1212 American and 1200 Finnish participants between 15 and 25 years of age. Measures included the South Oaks Gambling Screen for problem gambling, and items for peer group identificat…

Someone to count on: social support as an effect modifier of viral load suppression in a prospective cohort study.

Though functional social support has been shown to serve as a protective factor for HIV viral load suppression in other populations, scant research has examined this relationship among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. We assessed characteristics of social support, effects of social support on HIV viral load, and moderation by social support of the relationship between psychosocial indicators of a synergistic epidemic (syndemic) and HIV viral load. We analyzed longitudinal data from HIV-positive MSM using antiretroviral therapy who were enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Coho…

Mediating and moderating effects of social support in the study of child abuse and adult physical and mental health.

A number of cross-sectional and a few longitudinal studies have shown a developmental relationship between child abuse and adult physical and mental health. Published findings also suggest that social support can lessen the risk of adverse outcomes for some abused children. However, few studies have investigated whether social support mediates or moderates the relationship between child abuse and adult physical and mental health. Structural equation modeling was used to examine data on these topics from a longitudinal study of more than 30 years. While a latent construct of physical and emotio…

Optimism and depression: a new look at social support as a mediator among women at risk for breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer risk is a chronic stressor associated with depression. Optimism is associated with lower levels of depression among breast cancer survivors. However, to our knowledge, no studies have explored the relationship between optimism and depression among women at risk for breast cancer. We hypothesized that women at risk for breast cancer who have higher levels of optimism would report lower levels of depression and that social support would mediate this relationship. METHOD: Participants (N = 199) with elevated distress were recruited from the community and completed self-r…

Spouses of patients with a stoma lack information and support and are restricted in their social and sexual life: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: A permanent stoma has a large impact on everyday life with several physical, mental, and social impairments for the individual. It seems obvious that if persons with stomas are affected socially by the stoma creation, it is likely that the family and/or relatives will be affected as well. The objective of this systematic review was to explore how stoma creation may affect spouses of patients with stomas. METHODS: A systematic review was undertaken based on database searches including studies published from 1950 to 2012. We applied a method of synthesis based on narrative summaries of

Supporting Social Engagement in Long-Term Care Through Paired Socially Assistive Robot-Virtual Reality Activities for Older Adults with Cognitive Impairment and Apathy.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults living in long-term care settings, particularly those with cognitive impairment and apathy, frequently experience reduced social engagement. Socially assistive robots and virtual reality systems may help support engagement, but little is known about whether they can sustain engagement during real-world deployment while also facilitating interaction between older adults. This study examined whether socially structured socially assistive robot-virtual reality (SAR-VR) systems could sustain engagement and support human-human interaction during repeated use in long-term
