Effects of contact with a dog on prefrontal brain activity: A controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There is a broad range of known effects of animal contact on human mental and physical health. Neurological correlates of human interaction with animals have been sparsely investigated. We investigated changes in frontal brain activity in the presence of and during contact with a dog. METHODS: Twenty-one healthy individuals each participated in six sessions. In three sessions, participants had contact with a dog, and in three control sessions they interacted with a plush animal. Each session had five two-minute phases with increasing intensity of contact to the dog or plush animal

Changes in autonomic nervous system during cerebral desaturation episodes in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Little evidence is available on the effect of regional cerebral desaturation (rCD) episodes that occur in the first days after aneurysm subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) on the autonomic nervous system activity and on cardiovascular hemodynamics. In this study, we aimed to determine the impact of rCD episodes, developed within 5 days of aSAH, on the autonomic nervous system based on the assessment of baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and on cardiac output (CO) and cardiac index (CI), and on cerebral autoregulation (CA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 96 patients with aSAH, 36 patients (aged

To snack or not to snack: Using fNIRS to link inhibitory control to functional connectivity in the toddler brain.

Inhibitory control (IC) emerges in infancy, continues to develop throughout childhood and is linked to later life outcomes such as school achievement, prosocial behavior, and psychopathology. Little, however, is known about the neural processes underpinning IC, especially in 2-year-olds. In this study, we examine functional connectivity (FC) in 2.5-year-olds while recording hemodynamic responses via functional infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during a traditional snack delay task. We found that functional connectivity strength between left frontal and parietal cortex and bilateral parietal cortex

Intraoperative Optical Monitoring of Spinal Cord Hemodynamics Using Multiwavelength Imaging System.

The spinal cord is a major structure of the central nervous system allowing, among other things, the transmission of afferent sensory and efferent motor information. During spinal surgery, such as scoliosis correction, this structure can be damaged, resulting in major neurological damage to the patient. To date, there is no direct way to monitor the oxygenation of the spinal cord intraoperatively to reflect its vitality. This is essential information that would allow surgeons to adapt their procedure in case of ischemic suffering of the spinal cord. We report the development of a specific devi

Neonatal NIRS monitoring: recommendations for data capture and review of analytics.

Brain injury is one of the most consequential problems facing neonates, with many preterm and term infants at risk for cerebral hypoxia and ischemia. To develop effective neuroprotective strategies, the mechanistic basis for brain injury must be understood. The fragile state of neonates presents unique research challenges; invasive measures of cerebral blood flow and oxygenation assessment exceed tolerable risk profiles. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can safely and non-invasively estimate cerebral oxygenation, a correlate of cerebral perfusion, offering insight into brain injury-related me

A systematic review of studies that used NIRS to measure neural activation during emotion processing in healthy individuals.

Functional neuroimaging provides an avenue for earlier diagnosis and tailored treatment of psychological disorders characterised by emotional impairment. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) offers ecological advantages compared to other neuroimaging techniques and suitability of measuring regions involved in emotion functions. A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the capacity of NIRS to detect activation during emotion processing and to provide recommendations for future research. Following a comprehensive literature search, we reviewed 85 journal articles, which compared activation dur

Determination of metmyoglobin in cooked tan mutton using Vis/NIR hyperspectral imaging system.

In this study, the ENVI 4.6 software was used to obtain the spectral reflection value of samples. The outlier samples were eliminated by the Monte Carlo method, and then SPXY (sample set partitioning based on be x-y distances) was used to divide the calibration set and prediction set. The spectral images were pretreated and characteristic wavelengths were extracted. The spectral models of full and pretreated spectra and characteristic bands were established by partial least squares regression (PLSR) and principle component regression (PCR), and the optimal modeling combination was selected. Rapid and robust on-scene detection of cocaine in street samples using a handheld near-infrared spectrometer and machine learning algorithms.

On-scene drug detection is an increasingly significant challenge due to the fast-changing drug market as well as the risk of exposure to potent drug substances. Conventional colorimetric cocaine tests involve handling of the unknown material and are prone to false-positive reactions on common pharmaceuticals used as cutting agents. This study demonstrates the novel application of 740-1070 nm small-wavelength-range near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to confidently detect cocaine in case samples. Multistage machine learning algorithms are used to exploit the limited spectral features and predict n

The origins of cortical multisensory dynamics: Evidence from human infants.

Classic views of multisensory processing suggest that cortical sensory regions are specialized. More recent views argue that cortical sensory regions are inherently multisensory. To date, there are no published neuroimaging data that directly test these claims in infancy. Here we used fNIRS to show that temporal and occipital cortex are functionally coupled in 3.5-5-month-old infants (N = 65), and that the extent of this coupling during a synchronous, but not an asynchronous, audiovisual event predicted whether occipital cortex would subsequently respond to sound-only information. These data s

A NIR sensor for cyanide detection and its application in cell imaging.

A novel 'D-π-A' sensor 1 has been designed and prepared via the condensation reaction of 3‑ethyl‑2‑methyl‑1,3‑benzothiazol‑3‑ium iodide and 5‑nitro‑o‑vanillin. Upon treatment with cyanide, sensor 1 exhibited a significant near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence quenching at 663nm. The MS, IR, 1H NMR and DFT methods confirmed that the response of 1 to cyanide is due to the nucleophilic addition reaction, which results in the inhibition of the Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) process in the sensor. Furthermore, sensor 1 was used for the determination of CN- in HeLa cells.

Indocyanine green as a near-infrared fluorescent agent for identifying parathyroid glands during thyroid surgery in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Surgical procedures involving the thyroid gland require identification of the parathyroid glands. Indocyanine green (ICG) is a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent contrast agent used for a variety of procedures such as intraoperative angiography, extrahepatic cholangiography, and lymph node mapping. In this study, we used a canine model to evaluate ICG for NIR fluorescent imaging of the parathyroid gland. METHODS: Three dogs were used for the study. The dogs were administered general anesthesia, and after surgical dissection, each dog received a series of intravenous ICG doses ranging

3-Aminophenyl boronic acid-functionalized CuInS2 quantum dots as a near-infrared fluorescence probe for the determination of dopamine.

Water-soluble CuInS2 ternary quantum dots (QDs) capped by mercaptopropionic acid were directly synthesized in aqueous solution. Consequently, the CuInS2 QDs were covalently linked to 3-aminophenyl boronic acid molecules to form the 3-aminophenyl boronic acid-functionalized CuInS2 QDs (F-CuInS2 QDs). The F-CuInS2 QDs had a fairly symmetric fluorescence emission centered at 736nm that was in the near-infrared region (NIR). The F-CuInS2 QDs containing boronic acid functional groups were reactive toward vicinal diols to form five- or six-member cyclic esters in an alkaline aqueous solution. The re

Nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor Ru(II)/Ru(III) electronic coupling in cyanide-bridged tetra-ruthenium square complexes.

Electrochemical properties of cyanide-bridged metal squares, [Ru(4)](4+) and [Rh(2)-Ru(2)](6+), clearly demonstrate the role of the nearest (NN) metal moiety in mediating the next-nearest neighbor (NNN) metal-to-metal electronic coupling. The differences in electrochemical potentials for successive oxidations of equivalent Ru(II) centers in [Ru(4)](4+) are ΔE(1/2) = 217 mV and 256 mV and are related to intense, dual metal-to-metal-charge-transfer (MMCT) absorption bands. This contrasts with a small value of ΔE(1/2) = 77 mV and no MMCT absorption bands observed to accompany the oxidations of [R

Donor-acceptor biradicals as ground state analogues of photoinduced charge separated states.

A Valence Bond Configuration Interaction (VBCI) model is used to relate the intraligand magnetic exchange interaction (J) to the electronic coupling matrix element (HAB) in Tp(Cum,MeZn)(SQNN), a compound that possesses a Donor-Acceptor (D-A) SemiQuinone-NitronylNitroxide (SQNN) biradical ligand. Within this framework, an SQ --> NN charge transfer state mixes with the ground state and stabilizes the spin triplet (S = 1). This charge-transfer transition is observed spectroscopically and probed using resonance Raman spectroscopy. In addition, the temperature-dependent electronic absorption spectr

Near infrared Raman spectroscopic mapping of native brain tissue and intracranial tumors.

This study assessed the diagnostic potential of Raman spectroscopic mapping by evaluating its ability to distinguish between normal brain tissue and the human intracranial tumors gliomas and meningeomas. Seven Raman maps of native specimens were collected ex vivo by a Raman spectrometer with 785 nm excitation coupled to a microscope with a motorized stage. Variations within each Raman map were analyzed by cluster analysis. The dependence of tissue composition on the tissue type in cluster averaged Raman spectra was shown by linear combinations of reference spectra. Normal brain tissue was foun
