Auditory system dysfunction due to infantile thiamine deficiency: long-term auditory sequelae.

Eleven infants who were fed a thiamine-deficient formula for a mean of 3 months were evaluated for immediate and long-term auditory abnormal … and the rest had neural hearing loss. All survivors had a language developmental delay and impaired speech intelligibility of varying degrees, especially in the presence of background noise. Thiamine is crucial for normal auditory development and function, and its deficiency may be considered an acquired metabolic cause of ANSD in infants.

Effects of velar resistance on speech aerodynamics.

The level of intelligibility attained by speakers with cleft palate reflects not only the ability to achieve adequate velopharyngeal closure but other complex variables as well. When closure is inadequate, performance is influenced by compensatory responses of the tongue, vocal folds, respiratory muscles and nasal valve. The purpose of the present study was to determine how a loss of velar resistance associated with velopharyngeal inadequacy affects speech pressures and airflow. The pressure-flow technique (Warren, 1979) was used to assess mean airflow rate, mean intraoral and nasal pressures

Philosophy of research in motor speech disorders.

The primary objective of this position paper is to assess the theoretical and empirical support that exists for the Mayo Clinic view of motor speech disorders in general, and for oromotor, nonverbal tasks as a window to speech production processes in particular. Literature both in support of and against the Mayo clinic view and the associated use of oromotor, nonverbal tasks, is reviewed, along with literature from normal speech production and neurophysiology. This literature is organized and analysed to show that theoretical and experimental support for the Mayo view is weak at best, and that

Everyday listeners' impressions of speech produced by individuals with adductor spasmodic dysphonia.

Individuals with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) have reported that unfamiliar communication partners appear to judge them as sneaky, nervous or not intelligent, apparently based on the quality of their speech; however, there is minimal research into the actual everyday perspective of listening to ADSD speech. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impressions of listeners hearing ADSD speech for the first time using a mixed-methods design. Everyday listeners were interviewed following sessions in which they made ratings of ADSD speech. A semi-structured interview approach was us

From prodromal stages to clinical trials: The promise of digital speech biomarkers in Parkinson's disease.

Speech impairment is a common and disabling symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting communication and quality of life. Advances in digital speech processing and artificial intelligence have revolutionized objective speech analysis. Given the complex nature of speech impairment, acoustic speech analysis offers unique biomarkers for neuroprotective treatments from the prodromal stages of PD. Digital speech biomarkers can monitor levodopa-induced motor complications, detect the effects of deep brain stimulation, and provide feedback for behavioral speech therapy. This review updates the me

From Support Vector Machines to Neural Networks: Advancing Automated Velopharyngeal Dysfunction Detection in Patients With Cleft Palate.

BACKGROUND: The generation of intelligible speech is the single most important outcome after cleft palate repair. The development of velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) compromises the outcome, and the burden of VPD remains largely unknown in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). To scale up VPD care in these areas, we continue to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for automatic detection of VPD from speech samples alone. METHODS: An age-matched, single-institution cohort of 60 patients (30 control, 30 with VPD after cleft palate repair) generated appro

Assessing Visual Speech Communication Abilities: Cross-Situational Consistency in Lipreadability.

Speech perception during face-to-face conversations is perhaps the most functionally significant aspect of multisensory processing in people's everyday lives. Although they may not be aware of it, people use lipreading to both supplement auditory processing under poor listening conditions and compensate for age-related declines. Thus, understanding the sender's role in communication is as important as understanding the receiver's role, and in both cases, a fundamental question concerns whether individual differences reflect abilities and not just skills. From a psychometric perspective, an abi

Conversational behaviors in youth with high-functioning ASD and Asperger syndrome.

Twenty-nine youth with autism spectrum disorders and 26 with typical development between 12 and 18 years of age were engaged in structured interviews (ADOS). The interviews were videotaped and rated for atypical conversational behaviors by trained raters, using the Pragmatic Rating Scale (Landa et al. Psychol Med 22:245-254, 1992). The ASD group was divided into AS and HFA/PDD-NOS subgroups. Significant differences were found among groups on approximately one-third of the PRS items. These items involved primarily the management of topics and information, reciprocity, intonation, and gaze manag

Cognitive Functions in Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is diagnosed on the basis of specific speech characteristics, in the absence of problems in hearing, intelligence, and language comprehension. This does not preclude the possibility that children with this speech disorder might demonstrate additional problems. METHOD: Cognitive functions were investigated in 3 domains: complex sensorimotor and sequential memory functions, simple sensorimotor functions, and nonrelated control functions. Seventeen children with CAS were compared with 17 children with normal speech development at 2 occasions within 15 m

Performance of hybrid gain formula versus traditional fitting formulas in hearing aid fitting in tinnitus patients with hearing loss.

PURPOSE: Hearing aid fitting can be challenging when tinnitus accompanies hearing loss, as speech intelligibility and quality of life are affected by both hearing loss and tinnitus perception. However, studies focusing on the optimal hearing aid fitting for this group are scarce. Here, we aim to investigate the performance of alternative hearing aid fitting scenarios in improving hearing aid benefit and managing tinnitus. METHODS: Sixty-six participants were included in the study and randomly divided into three groups based on the fitting formula: NAL-NL2, DSL pediatric and hybrid gain fittin…
