Strongyloidiasis can persist lifelong through autoinfection and may abruptly progress to hyperinfection with disseminated disease. We report a 38-year-old woman from southwestern Colombia with two months of postprandial bilious vomiting, oral intolerance, abdominal pain and 19 kg weight loss, initially managed as upper gastrointestinal bleeding and constitutional syndrome with suspected malignancy. Endoscopy showed hemorrhagic/atrophic gastritis, a deformed pylorus and irregular duodenal mucosa. On day 4 she deteriorated with hypoxemia and refractory shock; intubation, vasopressors, broad-spec…

Eosinophilia is a valuable biomarker for estimating the likelihood of parasitic infection in immigrants from tropical or subtropical regions … nophilia. A specific diagnosis was reached in 49.2% of the cases, most commonly filariasis (12.1%), strongyloidiasis (9.9%), and schistosomiasis (4.6%): 58 patients had coinfections. In conclusion, eosinophilia is common among migrants and represents a valuable biomarker for helminthiasis. Despite protocolized evaluation, nearly half of the cases remain undiagnose …

Introduction. Strongyloides stercoralis causes a helminthic infection that occurs via penetration of the skin with migration to the bloodstream, tracheobronchial tree, and gastrointestinal system. Pulmonary manifestations are rare and are typically seen in immunosuppressed patients who have Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome. Eosinophilic pleural effusions are rare in strongyloidiasis and only cited in a few case reports. Case Presentation. A 45-year-old male with a past medical history of diabetes mellitus, alcoholic cirrhosis, and end-stage renal disease presented to the emerg…

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal nematode infecting humans. The actual prevalence of infestation with this parasite in our setting is not well established. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the age, sex and co-morbid conditions among patients with S. stercoralis infestation as well as to study the common manifestations of strongyloidiasis in our patients. Records of patients with positive S. stercoralis larvae from January 2000 to December 2012 in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan were reviewed. Ten patients were male and two were female. Their age…

Cosmopolitan parasitic diseases are often unrecognized and misdiagnosed. Treatment can be difficult due mainly to a lack of the therapeutic drugs. The purpose of this review is to update knowledge about the therapy of anisakiasis, cystic echinococcosis, fascioliasis, giardiasis, pinworm/tapeworm infections, strongyloidiasis, and toxoeariasis.

An 83-year-old retired farmer developed invasive strongyloidiasis after using potent topical corticosteroids. Initial colonoscopy features mimicked ulcerative colitis, and the clinical course was complicated by bacterial septicaemia with Serratia and Enterococcus. He was treated successfully with oral ivermectin and antibiotics.

Individuals infected with Strongyloides stercoralis have been reported to produce different immunoglobulins isotypes, yet few studies have evaluated their use in strongyloidiasis diagnosis. The aim of this work was to evaluate the immunoreactivity of different classes and subclasses of anti-S. stercoralis circulating antibodies in alcoholic patients by ELISA and to perform immunoblotting in samples with discordant results between parasitological and immunological methods. 345 male patients with a clinical diagnosis of alcoholism hospitalized at a reference center for alcoholics in Salvador, Ba…

The authors report an observation of Strongyloidiasis with a localisation of larvae in the sperm. The usual drugs, thiabendazole and albendazole, are not efficacious in this case. The action of strongyloides larvae on the sterility of this patient (his reason for consultation) cannot be proved. Any pathologic or iatrogenic factors cannot explain the failure of the cure.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis pulmonary hyperinfection syndrome (SPHS) is a rare, frequently fatal complication of strongyloidiasis that is difficult to recognize because of its nonspecific multisystem manifestations. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion.
METHODS: This retrospective study identified 29 hospitalized patients with strongyloidiasis at Chaozhou Central Hospital between November 2018 and January 2026. We compared the clinical data of five patients with SPHS (SPHS group) and 21 patients with uncomplicated/chronic strongyloidiasis (non-SPHS group) and described the d…

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis infection is frequently overlooked in patients presenting with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) because of nonspecific clinical manifestations, despite its potential to cause severe pulmonary involvement, particularly in endemic regions.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series at Bach Mai Hospital, a tertiary referral center in northern Vietnam. Adult patients hospitalized between January 2024 and July 2025 with LRTIs and confirmed S. stercoralis infection were included. Patients were classified as having chronic strongyloidiasis (incl…

The author discusses the management of some opportunistic diseases more commonly observed in South American AIDS patients than in European ones. Characteristics of coinfection with HIV and leprosy, paracoccidioidomycosis, Chagas' disease, mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, malaria, disseminated BCG and strongyloidiasis are reviewed, with special emphasis on preferred therapeutic schedules for these conditions.

Strongyloidiasis and hookworm infections are neglected helminth diseases widespread in tropical and subtropical areas. In humans, particularly in immunocompromised patients infections potentially may lead to the life-threatening clinical conditions involving the respiratory as well as gastrointestinal systems. The increased number of tourists travelling to tropical regions is associated with more frequent infection with parasites such as Strongyloides and hookworm. The infection takes place when filariform larvae penetrate the skin exposed to soil, than migrate through the lungs and finally re…

Strongyloïdes stercoralis infection is a polymorphic and non specific clinical presentation. Often asymptomatic, it can be not seen. However, in patients with immunodeficiency, high parasite load can be observed, consequence of self-infestation cycle, and can spread throughout the body. This presentation of malignant strongyloidiasis presents a mortality rate of 70%. The case report presents a 45 years old patient of Caribbean origin, long time treated with corticosteroids for sarcoidosis, and hospitalized for Strongyloïdes stercoralis colitis with high parasite load, raising fears an evolutio…

We have therefore compared duodenal fluid and faecal … icroscopical examination of a single specimen of duodenal fluid was more sensitive for detection of strongyloidiasis, identifying 76% of patients; the parasite was found exclusively in duodenal fluid (and not in faeces) in 67% of patients. BACKGROUND: Education for health literacy of Australian Aboriginal people living remotely is challenging as their languages and worldviews are quite different from English language and Western worldviews. Becoming health literate depends on receiving comprehensible information in a culturally acceptable manner.
METHODS: The study objective was to facilitate oral health literacy through community education about scabies and strongyloidiasis, including their transmission and control, preceding an ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA) for these diseases. A discovery education approach where …

A case of severe Strongyloides stercoralis infection is described in a patient with renal failure due to bilateral cortical necrosis. Because thiabendazole, the drug of choice in strongyloidiasis, is primarily excreted by the kidneys, alternative therapy with a mebendazole was instituted. Although the patient eventually died as a result of the renal failure, successful therapy with mebendazole was well demonstrated.

We report the rare finding of Strongyloides stercoralis rhabditiform larvae in biliary fluid, here associated with cholecystitis and near total portal vein thrombosis. The role of S. stercoralis leading to atypical clinical presentations and difficulty diagnosing strongyloidiasis in such patients with appropriate geographic exposure is discussed.
