Oxidative phosphorylation has been demonstrated with mitochondria of the mi-1 respiratory mutant of Neurospora crassa. The P/O ratios observed with these mitochondria were approximately 0.8 with citrate and 0.4 with either externally added reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), succinate, or ascorbate-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TPD). Intravenous injection of the blood-substituting solution from milk serum has exerted a stimulating effect on the stomach secretion in experiments on dogs with stomach fistula. Secretion of acid, a decrease in pH of the juice, an increase in secretion of protein and intensification of the digestive ability of the juice were observed during infusion of the preparation and in the nearest period after it. Infusion of the milk serum preparation with succinate was not followed by activation of the stomach secretion.

Effect of the KCN poisoning on the cardiac muscle was studied by the aid of electron microscopic cytochemical methods. The early lesions revealed were: alterations in the region of the Z-lines, "septum formation" in the mitochondria, crystolysis, enlargment of the sarcotubules. Later destruction of the thick and thin filaments alteration of the intercalar discs were observed. Activity of the succinate-dehydrogenase and cytochromoxydase decreased. Authors emphasize the non-specific character of the alterations described.

Chlorpromazine was a potent inhibitor of O2-dependent malate oxidation, but not of H2 oxidation in Azotobacter vinelandii membranes. However, chlorpromazine did not significantly affect the activity of malate reductase or the reduction of cytochromes c and d. In the presence of chlorpromazine, cytochrome o failed to form a complex with CO. The site of action of chlorpromazine seems to be in the cytochromes c to cytochrome o branch, the pathway utilized by malate, succinate and NADH, but not by H2.

Human epidermal cells were cultured with pemphigus antibody in the presence of hydrocortisone, methylprednisolone sodium succinate, dapsone and gold. Hydrocortisone and methylprednisolone reduced the production of the enzyme plasminogen activator but dapsone and gold had no effect. These results support the hypothesis that corticosteroids have dual effects on pemphigus through inhibition of plasminogen activator production by epidermal cells and suppression of pemphigus antibody production by B lymphocytes.

The effect of the thiamine deficiency on the H+ secretion in an isolated gastric mucosa and also on the functional properties of the mitochondria was investigated. The thiamine deficiency was called forth through introduction of oxythiamine or by exclusion of thiamine from the ration. It is shown that the thiamine deficiency in an isolated gastric mucosa of the frog produced inhibition of the H+ secretion and in the gastric mitochondria of rats--a higher activity of succinate-dehydrogenase and a diminution of the exogenous cytochrome oxidation rate.

Congenital urinary malformations associated with congenital heart disease are very rare. We present a case of horseshoe and supernumerary kidney associated with coarctation of aorta diagnosed by a combination of techniques of teleradiography, aortography, intravenous pyelography; ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and Dimercapto Succinic Acid (DMSA) and Diethylene Triamine Pentacetate (DTPA) imaging. This case represents the first reported instance of horseshoe and supernumerary kidney associated with coarctation of aorta.

The effects of trivalent and hexavalent chromium (Cr3+ and Cr6+) compounds on renal and hepatic respiratory enzymes and metabolites of a freshwater fish, Anabas scandens, were studied. In a subchronic exposure of 30 days, both forms of chromium inhibited the activities of lactate dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, and isocitrate dehydrogenase, whereas the hexavalent form induced greater effects. The levels of pyruvate and lactate are not exactly reflected in lactate dehydrogenase activity.
