Preparation for Hand Surgery Fellowship: A Comparison of Resident Training Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Hand surgery is a unique subspecialty in which one can train after completion of either a plastic, orthopedic, or general surgical residency. This study compared hand surgery experience in residency among these different training pathways. METHODS: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education case logs of graduating residents in general surgery, orthopedics, and plastic surgery were evaluated for years 2009 through 2018. Cases were grouped according to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-defined categories for hand surgery. Comparisons between spec

The Public Recognizes Plastic Surgeons as Leading Experts in the Treatment of Congenital Cleft and Craniofacial Anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the public perception of plastic surgeons (PS) as craniofacial surgery specialists. METHODS: Members of the public (N = 1514) were asked to choose 1 or 2 specialists that they perceived to be an expert for 13 craniofacial surgery-related scenarios. Response patterns were distributed as "plastic surgeon alone" (PS alone), "PS combined with other specialists", or "no plastic surgeon" (No PS). Sociodemographic data, previous plastic surgery contact, and source of reported information were also collected. RESULTS: "Plastic surgeon alone" was signific

[Body contouring after massive weight loss].

With the advent of bariatric surgery, body contouring has grown to a new speciality in plastic surgery. Following massive weight loss, patients generally have skin redundancy on the trunk, buttocks, breast, upper arms, thighs and face, leading to a poor quality of life and social acceptance. This condition motivates many patients to consult a plastic surgeon to address these problems. Thus, plastic surgery has become an integral part of the surgical treatment of the morbidly obese. The aim of post-bariatric plastic surgery should be to restore a normal body image of the patient with as few sur

Beauty: Descent or Ascent? A Plastic Surgeon's Reflection.

The nature of beauty has long provoked reflection: does it descend from heaven into the body or ascend from the body to heaven ? For craniofacial surgeons, this duality is practical as well as philosophical. In Hesiod's Theogony , beauty is born from divine foam as Aphrodite, radiant and irresistible, representing a descent into corporeal form. Conversely, Plotinus' Enneads depict beauty as the radiance of form that awakens the soul, guiding it from the body toward Intellect and the One-a model of ascent . Craniofacial surgery embodies both movements. Trauma or congenital defects obscure the i

Contributions of the First Female Plastic Surgeon to Modern-Day Rhytidectomies.

Dr. Suzanne Noël was a pioneer for female surgeons and made fundamental contributions to the field of plastic surgery. Her hallmark operation, the "petit operation," defined the fundamental aspects to many modern rhytidectomies including the mini-lift and the short scar facelift. These contributions included camouflaging incisions in the hairline, limiting incision length, avoiding tension on the skin, meticulous handling of the skin edges, appropriate and precise vector placement, and staging operation when required. Through understanding the history of the fundamental principles on which rhy

Kintsugi and Wabi-Sabi: Reframing Aesthetic Surgery as the Art of Golden Repair.

The Japanese art of kintsugi-repairing broken ceramics with gold-offers a philosophical framework for reconceptualising aesthetic plastic surgery. Rather than concealing damage, kintsugi uses precious metal to honour an object's history of breakage, creating beauty through respectful repair. Together with wabi-sabi, the aesthetic philosophy that celebrates imperfection and transience, kintsugi challenges surgical practice to move beyond the pursuit of standardised perfection. This perspective examines how these Japanese aesthetic philosophies can inform contemporary surgical practice, from pat

"The historical timeline of cranioplasty".

Cranioplasty, defined as the reconstruction of cranial defects, not only offers protective effects with an aesthetically pleasing outcome, but also reverses the altered physiology post craniotomy and craniectomy. The journey of cranioplasty from its roots to the neoteric armamentarium depicts how enormously the innovation of surgical techniques have changed the face of plastic surgery.

Surgical Site Infection Risk Factor Analysis in Postbariatric Patients Undergoing Body Contouring Surgery: A Nested Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) following body-contouring plastic surgery pose a significant burden on patients and caregivers, possibly leading to undesired surgical outcomes. Surgical site infection incidence following body-contouring plastic surgery ranges from 2% to 7%, but is estimated much higher among postbariatric massive weight loss (MWL) patients. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate SSI rate, risk and protective factors among postbariatric MWL patients following body-contouring plastic surgery. METHODS: This was a nested case-control study of MWL patients w

Effect of a Perioperative Educational Video in Patients Undergoing Mohs Reconstruction: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and most are treated with Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) by fellowship-trained dermatologic surgeons. Complex reconstruction in cosmetically and functionally sensitive areas often requires a plastic surgery consult. The uncertainty regarding reconstructive options and cosmetic appearance is difficult emotionally and cognitively for patients. OBJECTIVES: To improve patient understanding about MMS reconstruction with plastic surgeons, we investigated the utility of a multimedia presentation during perioperative edu

A Comparison of Free Tissue Transfers to the Head and Neck Performed by Sugeons and Otolaryngologists.

BACKGROUND: The reconstruction of defects resulting from the extirpation of head and neck neoplasms is performed by both otolaryngology and plastic surgery services, mostly dependent on the institution. The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) provides a unique opportunity to examine a predefined set of variables with regard to free vascularized tissue transfers performed by each service. METHODS: Following institutional review board approval, the NSQIP Participant Use Files for 2005 to 2011 were examined for all Current Procedural Terminology cod

Cultivating a "Feminine" Surgical Culture: Lessons from Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Although the number of female physicians in the United States has been increasing, most practicing surgeons in the United States are men. By contrast, Indonesia has achieved notable gender parity among surgeons, with the number of women practicing as plastic surgeons projected to soon surpass that of men. Achieving greater female representation in plastic surgery is important for delivering high-quality care, especially in the face of physician shortages and high burnout rates. METHODS: This survey study was conducted at the 26th annual scientific meeting of the Indonesian Associa

Revisiting guidelines for global plastic and reconstructive surgical initiatives: Recommendations from a scoping review of two decades of published evidence.

BACKGROUND: We have an opportunity to strengthen guidelines for global surgical initiatives, such as those established by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (LCOGS). To recommend improvements supporting health system resilience, we conducted a qualitative scoping review and thematic analysis of the literature on global surgical initiatives in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) and similar surgical and perioperative specialties. METHODS: We queried four medical databases for publications from 2006 to 2023 pertaining to humanitarian sur
