Leptin and Associated Neural Pathways Underlying Obesity-Induced Hypertension.

Obesity rates have surged to pandemic levels, placing tremendous burden on our society. This chronic and complex disease is related to the development of many life-threatening illnesses including cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension caused by obesity increases the risk for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity by promoting stroke, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and end-stage renal disease. Overwhelming evidence supports neural origins for obesity-induced hypertension and pinpoints the adipose-derived hormone, leptin, and the sympathetic nervous system as major causal factor…

Sympathosensory interactions - Possible relevance in osteoarthritis.

The role of the sympathetic and sensory nervous systems in the development and progression of osteoarthritis (OA) is widely recognized, as is the fact that these systems can influence each other. However, the nature of sympathosensory interactions during OA progression remains unclear. In this narrative review, we provide an overview of scientifically proven or putative sympathosensory interactions at the peripheral, spinal, and central levels. We highlight the factors that determine direct or indirect coupling types and describe the signaling and cross-signaling mechanisms of interaction at t

Human liver afferent and efferent nerves revealed by 3-D/Airyscan super-resolution imaging.

Neural regulation of hepatic metabolism has long been recognized. However, the detailed afferent and efferent innervation of the human liver has not been systematically characterized. This is largely due to the liver's high lipid and pigment contents, causing false-negative (light scattering and absorption) and false-positive (autofluorescence) results in in-depth fluorescence imaging. Here, to avoid the artifacts in three-dimensional (3-D) liver neurohistology, we embed the bleached human liver in the high-refractive-index polymer for tissue clearing and antifade 3-D/Airyscan super-resolution

Frequent POCUS and auscultation for an earlier diagnosis of takotsubo syndrome and unraveling of its pathophysiology: The possible crucial role of LVOTO.

There is ample literature associating LVOTO with hypertension, AMI, LV hypertrophy, sigmoid septum, HCM, and TTS, particularly in midde aged/elderly/postmenopausal women, suggestive of a causal role for LVOTO in the pathophysiology of TTS. Although there is significant evidence that TTS is triggered by a sudden autonomic sympathetic nervous system surge and/or elevated blood-ridden catecholamines, the exact pathophysiologic trajectory leading to the clinical expression of the disease is still being debated. This review expounds on the possibility that LVOTO is a causal early component of this …

The relationship between muscle sympathetic nerve activity and systemic hemodynamics is altered in women with uterine fibroids.

Women with uterine fibroids (UF), benign tumors of the myometrium, have a higher prevalence of hypertension than women without UF. The cause for this relationship is unclear. Muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is a regulator of arterial blood pressure, and it is possible that variations in MSNA predispose women with UF to develop hypertension. The purpose of this study was to assess baseline blood pressure and MSNA and the relationships between MSNA and systemic hemodynamics in women with and without UF. We measured blood pressure (brachial intra-arterial line), MSNA (microneurography),

Renal sympathetic activity: A key modulator of pressure natriuresis in hypertension.

Hypertension is a complex disorder ensuing necessarily from alterations in the pressure-natriuresis relationship, the main determinant of lo … ogical scenario. In this article, we critically analyze the interplay of the renal component of the sympathetic nervous system and the pressure-natriuresis mechanism in the development of hypertension. A special focus is placed on discussing recent findings supporting a role of baroreceptors as a component, along with the afference of reno-renal reflex, of the input to the …

Acute intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia and sympathetic neurovascular transduction in men.

KEY POINTS: Intermittent hypoxia leads to long-lasting increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity and blood pressure, contributing to increased risk for hypertension in obstructive sleep apnoea patients. We determined whether augmented vascular responses to increasing sympathetic vasomotor outflow, termed sympathetic neurovascular transduction (sNVT), accompanied changes in blood pressure following acute intermittent hypercapnic hypoxia in men. Lower body negative pressure was utilized to induce a range of sympathetic vasoconstrictor firing while measuring beat-by-beat blood pressure and f

Fatal attraction - A brief pathophysiology of the interaction between atrial fibrillation and myocardial ischemia.

Atrial fibrillation and coronary artery disease are highly prevalent diseases in an aging population. They share risk factors and are frequently associated. Beyond their mere association, they impact on each other. The positive feed-back between atrial fibrillation and acute myocardial ischemia involves sympathetic activation and may result in sudden death.

Sympathetic nerve innervation in cervical posterior longitudinal ligament as a potential causative factor in cervical spondylosis with sympathetic symptoms and preliminary evidence.

UNLABELLED: Sympathetic symptoms associated with cervical disorders, such as vertigo, headache, dizziness, etc., are common clinical disorders bewildering both clinicians and patients. In our clinical practice we observed that sympathetic symptoms associated with cervical disorders were apparently relieved in some patients after undergoing routine anterior cervical decompression and fusion plus posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) resection. This study was designed to investigate the sympathetic nerve innervations in the cervical PLL and its potential correlation with cervical sympathetic sym

Changes in vagal reactivity to the sympathicotonia during the progression of heart failure: from self-suppression to counteraction.

Activities of both autonomic nervous system divisions, sympathetic and parasympathetic, are dual--continuous, tonic and changing, modulating. Tonic activity domination accompanies stationary (patho)physiological conditions, while modulating activity occurs with the change of stimuli. The intensity of the two activities is inversely proportional. In patients with heart failure, spectral analysis of heart rate variability displays reduced sympathetic modulation activity during illness, as a logical consequence of an increased sympathetic tone. On the other hand, vagal modulation activity slightl

Heart rate variability in patients with fibromyalgia and patients with chronic fatigue syndrome: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this systematic literature review is to determine whether there are differences and similarities in heart rate variability (HRV) between adult patients with fibromyalgia (FM), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and healthy pain-free control subjects. METHODS: To obtain relevant articles, PubMed and Web of Knowledge were searched for case-control studies. Selection of the literature was based on selection criteria ascertaining studies with adult human patient groups comparing HRV. Risk of bias and levels of evidence were determined. RESULTS: Sixteen case-control studies we

Sympathetic overactivity as a cause of hypertension in chronic renal failure.

OBJECTIVE: To review the current literature on sympathetic mediation of hypertension in chronic renal failure. BACKGROUND: Hypertension is present in the vast majority of patients with chronic renal failure and constitutes a major risk factor for the excessive cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in this patient population. Although, traditionally, this hypertension is thought to be largely volume-dependent, an increasing body of literature suggests that there is an important sympathetic neural component. Microneurographic studies have demonstrated sympathetic overactivity without barorefle

The rehabilitation of causalgia (complex regional pain syndrome-type II).

CRPS-type I or causalgia is a challenging pain syndrome and its pathogenesis remains controversial. Although its incidence is relatively low, the pain and suffering it causes can be severe and functionally debilitating. Early, accurate diagnosis permits initiation of appropriate therapeutic interventions and enhances the potential for successful treatment.

Sympathetic prions.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are a group of invariably fatal neurodegenerative diseases. The infectious agent is termed prion and is thought to be composed of a modified protein (PrP Sc or Pr PRES ), a protease-resistant conformer of the normal host-encoded membrane glycoprotein, PrP C. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, scrapie of sheep, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease are among the most notable transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Prions are most efficiently propagated trough intracerebral inoculation, yet the entry point of the infectious agent is often through peripheral si
