BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain injuries are associated with significant time away from sport and high reinjury rates. Recent evidence suggests that hamstring injuries often occur during accelerative running, but investigations of hamstring mechanics have primarily examined constant speed running on a treadmill. To help fill this gap in knowledge, this study compares hamstring lengths and lengthening velocities between accelerative running and constant speed overground running.
METHODS: We recorded 2 synchronized videos of 10 participants (5 female, 5 male) during 6 accelerative running trials a

BACKGROUND: Hip pain in patients with normal bony anatomy and anterior labral injury may be related to compression of the iliopsoas tendon across the anterior capsulolabral complex. No attempts to characterize the 3-dimensional anatomy of the iliopsoas tendon and its relationship to the acetabular labrum have been reported to date.
HYPOTHESIS: The iliopsoas tendon directly overlies the capsulolabral complex. Contribution of the muscle belly and tendon to the overall circumference at the level of the labrum is approximately the same.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.

Management of soft tissue ruptures of extensor tendon lesions of zone I is both difficult and controversial. Because of their superficial position already minor injury can be sufficient for laceration. Furthermore many authors are convinced of an easy way of diagnosing and repairing extensor tendon ruptures in comparison to injuries of the flexor tendons. However, this injury can cause significant hand dysfunction and has to be treated with attention in order to provide the best possible outcome for the patient. Therefore we try to evaluate the common treatment procedures and to give guideline

Avulsion injuries result from the application of a tensile force to a musculoskeletal unit or ligament. Although injuries tend to occur more commonly in skeletally immature populations due to the weakness of their apophysis, adults may also be subject to avulsion fractures, particularly those with osteoporotic bones. The most common sites of avulsion injuries in adolescents and children are apophyses of the pelvis and knee. In adults, avulsion injuries commonly occur within the tendon due to underlying degeneration or tendinosis. However, any location can be involved in avulsion injuries. Radi

BACKGROUND: Ballistic fractures of the carpus and hand are routinely treated in large urban centers. These injuries can be challenging due t … ontinued within 24 hours after surgery. It is important to consider concomitant nerve, vascular, or tendon injuries requiring repair. We recommend early treatment of these injuries with debridement and stabilization. Due to lack of follow-up and patient noncompliance, early definitive treatment with primary bone grafting should be considered.

In a study of 21 primates, treatment with oral ibuprofen significantly reduced the force required for tendon gliding following flexor tendon injury in zone II. Tendons that were partially lacerated but not repaired required less force for tendon motion than those repaired. Ibuprofen also reduced the breaking strength of completely divided and repaired extensor tendons. The addition of a piece of chromic suture buried across the extensor tenorrhaphy site significantly increased the breaking strength of the repair in control and treated animals alike. These findings were observed at 4 and 6 week

The outcome of adult phalangeal neck fractures caused by saws has not been previously investigated. Over a 15-year period, a total of 36 cases of saw-related injuries resulting in phalangeal neck fractures of the middle phalanx of the finger or the proximal phalanx of the thumb were treated. All injuries were industrial and covered by insurance. They were all adult males with type II fractures. The fracture were managed by K-wire fixation, immobilizing the distal joint only. The proximal joints were mobilized immediately after surgery and the K-wire was removed after 5 weeks. The following 2 p

Sex differences exist with regards to ligament and tendon injuries. Lower collagen synthesis has been observed in exercising women vs. men, and in users of oral contraceptives (OC) vs. nonusers, but it is unknown if OC will influence tendon biomechanics of women undergoing regular training. Thirty female athletes (handball players, 18-30 yr) were recruited: 15 long-term users of OC (7.0 ± 0.6 yr) and 15 nonusers (>5 yr). Synchronized values of patellar tendon elongation (obtained by ultrasonography) and tendon force were sampled during ramped isometric knee extensor maximum voluntary contracti…

BACKGROUND: Avulsion injuries of the pelvis and hip region are typical injuries in adolescent athletes but can be found in adults as well. Typical sites for avulsion injuries include the origin/insertion of tendons and ligaments. Among adolescents, the not yet ossified apophysis is also frequently involved. The pelvis and hip are especially prone to such injuries due to their complex musculotendinous anatomy. Clinical history and physical examination in combination with the recognition of typical imaging findings are essential for correct diagnosis of these mostly acute, but sometimes also chr

Acute shoulder tendon and intra-articular injuries are common and their imaging well described. However, a subset of patients present with more unusual acute shoulder muscle injury. Of these, pectoralis major muscle injuries are encountered the most often and are increasingly prevalent due to a focus on personal fitness, particularly bench-press exercises. Other muscle injuries around the shoulder are rare. This article reviews the anatomy, mechanism of injury, and the imaging findings in relation to injuries of these muscles around the shoulder. We focus on pectoralis major injury but also re

Injuries to the extensor mechanism create an imbalance in the precise flexion-extension system that regulates finger motion. This imbalance results in visible and functional deformities. Although these deformities are initially supple, they can become fixed and progress to joint degeneration. This article outlines early diagnosis and accurate treatment of the most common extensor tendon injuries. Avoidance of late sequellae is the goal.

As a universal human tool the hand often suffers injuries of its soft tissue. Different localization of defects (palmar and dorsal) and different injuries of functional structures (tendon, nerve, vessel, bone) also need different soft tissue cover and wound closure. The possibilities in plastic surgery of the hand include free transplantation of skin, local and distant flaps, free flaps and neurovascular flaps.

This report describes the incidence and severity of subclinical injuries to underlying structures in lacerations to the hand and forearm. One hundred consecutive hand and forearm lacerations that penetrated the full thickness of subcutaneous tissue were studied prospectively. Lacerations were explored under either biceps or forearm tourniquets. Injuries, treatment, tourniquet time, causative agent and complications were recorded. In all, 97 patients sustained 100 lacerations. A total of 49 deep injuries were discovered, none of which was detected clinically before exploration. Of these, 33 wer

A large number of tendon repair techniques have been described for acute tendon injury. However, after reviewing the literature, it was noted that there were limited descriptions of specific suture techniques that address repair processes of chronic tendon pathology. Generally, in chronic tendinopathy, others have described a process known as tendon tubularization, which consists of a running stitch using a nonabsorbable suture material along the external surface of the tendon. We believe that leaving a nonabsorbable suture on the exterior surface of the tendon in this manner has the potential

Tendon calcification is a common clinical condition that frequently occurs as a complication after tendon injury and surgery, or as an expression of fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva. This condition can be referred to by various names in clinical practice and literature, including tendon ossification, tendon mineralization, heterotopic ossification, and calcific tendonitis. The exact pathogenesis of tendon calcification remains uncertain, but current mainstream research suggests that calcification is mostly cell mediated. To further elucidate the pathogenesis of tendon calcification and to
