A biopsychosocial questionnaire for patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome: The BETY-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: The BETY-Biopsychosocial Questionnaire (BETY-BQ) is a scale developed to assess the biopsychosocial domains of patients with rheumatic diseases under a single roof. The study aimed to determine the validity and reliability of the BETY-BQ in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). METHODS: At enrollment and 1 week, 91 patients with pSS completed the BETY-BQ. Construct validity was measured by correlating the BETY-BQ total score responses with the Health Assessment Questionnaire, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey, EULAR Sjögren's Syndrome

An Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of the Sheehan Disability Scale in a Chinese Psychotherapy-Seeking Sample.

Although the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) is one of the most extensively used and tested disability measurements, there has only been one psychometric evaluation of its properties in a Chinese-speaking population. Here, we provide a comprehensive psychometric assessment of the scale in 465 Mandarin-speakers who were accessing information online regarding psychotherapy. Principal component analysis and subsequent confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the SDS is one-dimensional (normed fit index = 0.976, non-normed fit index = 0.97, comparative fit index = 0.98, goodness-of-fit index = 0

Prediction of survival on the waiting list for heart transplantation and of posttransplant nonadherence-Results of a prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Only a few previous studies have focused on the interaction between pretransplant psychological variables, survival on the waiting list, and adherence to therapy after heart transplantation (HTx). METHODS: This work combined two studies: Study 1 monitored survival of patients on a HTx waiting list (n = 50) and study 2 examined barriers to adherence after HTx (subgroup of n = 20). All patients were evaluated immediately after listing for HTx (T0). Those in study 2 were also evaluated immediately after HTx (T1) and after 6 months (T2). Psychosocial functioning was measured by the Tr

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) as an endogenous anxiolytic in patients with heart failure? - No replication of previous results showing an inverse association of anxiety and plasma ANP parameters.

OBJECTIVE: An acute anxiolytic-like effect of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) has been demonstrated in several preclinical and clinical studies. In a so far singular study (Herrmann-Lingen et al., 2003), patients with congestive heart failure, who pathognomonicly display increased plasma ANP, showed a significant inverse association of anxiety symptoms and pro-ANP levels, giving rise to speculations about ANP as an endogenous anxiolytic. We tried to replicate and extend this preliminary finding. METHODS: In 56 patients suffering from heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fract

Validity and clinical interpretability of Overall Anxiety Severity And Impairment Scale (OASIS).

BACKGROUND: The Overall Anxiety Severity and Impairment Scale is a brief generic measure for anxiety that encompasses frequency and intensity as well as behavioral and functional aspects of anxiety. This study was conducted to elucidate aspects of reliability, validity, and interpretability, such as equivalence of factor loadings across non-clinical and clinical populations, convergence and discriminance of related variables, and performance of detecting diagnostic and medical status of anxiety disorders. METHODS: Non-clinical and clinical Japanese populations were taken from a panelist pool

Psychometric properties of four anxiety measures in older adults.

Despite relatively high prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in older adults, little attention has been paid to the establishment of psychometrically sound measures for this population. The current study addresses this issue by examining the psychometric properties of four self-report anxiety measures: the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Worry Scale (WS), Fear Questionnaire (FQ), and Padua Inventory (PI). Two older adult community subsamples were assessed, one with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD; n = 50) and the other with no anxiety complaints (Normal Controls: NC; n = 9

Using gait videos to automatically assess anxiety.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the number of people with anxiety disorders has increased worldwide. Methods for identifying anxiety through objective clues are not yet mature, and the reliability and validity of existing modeling methods have not been tested. The objective of this paper is to propose an automatic anxiety assessment model with good reliability and validity. METHODS: This study collected 2D gait videos and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale data from 150 participants. We extracted static and dynamic time-domain features and frequency-domain features from the gait videos a

Development of IMPAACT (Impairment Measure for Parental Food Allergy-Associated Anxiety and Coping Tool), a validated tool to screen for food allergy-associated parental anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Parents commonly experience anxiety owing to their children's food allergies (FAs). Although FA-specific anxiety screening tools for adult and pediatric patients exist, a tool for parents with children with food allergy is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a tool that measures parental anxiety related to their child's FA. METHODS: To construct the instrument, items were developed based on consultations with stakeholders and review of existing literature. The instrument was then pilot tested, and items were modified based on relevance, importance, item-total correlations

Depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder six months following preeclampsia and normotensive pregnancy: a P4 study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health is an integral part of overall health. Mental health disorders following childbirth are common and poor maternal mental health has consequences for both the mother and her infant. Preeclampsia is also relatively common in pregnancy but there is little known about the intersection between these two important conditions. Gaining a better understanding of the psychological consequences following preeclampsia is important, especially the link with depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. If women who experience preeclampsia are recognised as being at increas

Virtual Reality for Pain Management During Repeated Pediatric Laser Procedures: Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Lasers have wide applications in medicine but are associated with pain and anxiety, particularly in younger patients. Pain mitigation is often limited to topical anesthetics in the outpatient setting. Distraction techniques are limited by the need for ocular protection, which can include eye patches that completely occlude vision. Virtual reality (VR) is effective at managing procedural pain and anxiety during other short medical procedures and is a promising tool for this population. OBJECTIVE: This trial aims to assess the safety, feasibility, and efficacy of the virtual reality

Body-related behaviours and cognitions in the eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Different body-related behaviours and cognitions (checking, avoidance, comparison, display) have been shown to be related to unhealthy eating attitudes in a non-clinical sample. AIMS: This study tested whether the use of body-related behaviours is higher in eating-disordered women than in non-clinical women. It also examined whether the use of body-related behaviours is associated with psychological characteristics (particularly anxiety, depression and narcissistic characteristics), controlling for age and eating pathology. METHOD: Ninety-nine adult women with diagnosed eating di

Learning how to talk about approaching death: results from a pre-test post-test trial on the effectiveness of a blended-learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Caring for dying individuals is a key aspect of many clinical and medical practices. However, training and reflection opportunities on conversations between healthcare professionals, dying patients, and caregivers are limited. To address this gap, we developed a blended-learning approach focusing on effective communication about approaching death, termed Talking About Dying (TAD). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of this approach on pre- and postgraduate medical learners' knowledge, anxiety, self-efficacy, and skills related to TAD. METHODS: A pre-test post-test trial with

Cultural Adaptation and Validation of the Urdu Version of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) in Male Patients With Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Adults with substance use disorders (SUDs) often have co-occurring mental health problems. Emotion regulation may play a vital role in mental health problems. The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) is a widely used measure for assessing cognitive emotion regulation. However, it has not been used in Pakistan on patients with co-occurring SUDs and mental health issues. The present study aims to translate and adapt the CERQ into the Urdu language and to determine its reliability and convergent validity in a sample of male patients with SUDs in Pakistan. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms and psychological comorbidity in eating disorder patients.

PURPOSE: There is some evidence that eating disorders (ED) and Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) share common clinical features and that ADHD might contribute to the severity of eating disorders. A greater understanding of how the presence of comorbid ADHD may affect the psychopathological framework of eating disorder seems of primary importance. The aim of our study was to evaluate rates of ADHD in three ED subgroups of inpatients: anorexia nervosa restricting type (AN-R), anorexia nervosa binge-eating/purging type (AN-BP) and bulimia nervosa (BN). The secondary aim was the eval
