Speech perception 30 years after cisplatin-based chemotherapy in adults: limited clinical relevance of long-term ototoxicity?

BACKGROUND: Cisplatin-based chemotherapy (CBCT) can cause high-frequency hearing loss, but little is known about the development and clinical relevance of this hearing loss in survivors of adult-onset cancer with very long-term follow-up. This case-control study investigates hearing and speech perception both in quiet and with background noise 30-years after CBCT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One-hundred-and-one patients (Cases) who received CBCT for testicular cancer between 1980 and 1994 were assessed with pure-tone audiometry (.125 - 8 kHz) and speech perception tests including hearing in noise t

Lightness, filling-in, and the fundamental role of context in visual perception.

Visual perception is defined by the unique spatial interactions that distinguish it from the point-to-point precision of a photometer. Over several decades, Lothar Spillmann has made key observations about the nature of these interactions and the role of context in perception. Our lab has explored the perceptual properties of spatial interactions and more generally the importance of visual context for neuronal responses and perception. Our investigations into the spatiotemporal dynamics of lightness provide insight into underlying mechanisms. For example, backward masking and luminance modulat

Image-Enhanced Autonomous Navigation in Intestinal Robotics: A Threshold-Triggered Approach Combining Dark-Area Localization and Morphological Contour GuidanceShort title: Enhancing Visibility and Navigation Precision in Confined Spaces.

Robotic endoscopy offers a potential route to autonomous gastrointestinal navigation. However, autonomous intestinal navigation is hindered by non-rigid lumen deformation and visual degradation from specular reflections, which compromise accurate perception and stable control. We propose a threshold-triggered, vision-driven framework incorporating Navier-Stokes-based highlight suppression. Algorithmically, the system is governed by a threshold-triggered mechanism that acts as a conditional perception gate, dynamically alternating between a lightweight "dark-area guidance" algorithm for approxi

The development of looming motion perception in infants: From blinking responses to BabyBCI.

This chapter reviews the development of looming motion perception in infancy, tracing the progression from early behavioral defensive behaviors, such as blinking, to contemporary EEG-based brain-computer interface approaches. Grounded in ecological optics, it examines how infants learn to detect approaching objects that signal impending collision and how this skill becomes increasingly refined with age and locomotor experience. Behavioral studies show that younger infants tend to rely on simpler cues, such as the visual angle of the approaching object, whereas older infants and crawlers increa

An Implanted Tooth That Can Feel.

Diverse material species, ranging from gold to ceramic, have been selected to construct dental implants in the past decades. However, existing implants are primarily designed to restore masticatory function yet fail to completely recover the sensory feedback of natural teeth. Deprivation of sensory inputs impairs the perception of food texture and hinders the regulation of chewing force. This defect could result in unnecessary overload, leading to technical complications and biological failures, such as bone loss and temporomandibular joint damage, which remarkably limit their clinical outcome

"I feel a lot more connected with my body after a session": a focus group exploration of the impact of exoskeleton walking on highly experienced robotic exoskeleton walkers.

PURPOSE: Robotic exoskeleton walking has become increasingly prevalent in the management of paralysis. To support better integration into clinical practice, there is a need to understand the users' perceptions of the effects of exposure to large volumes of robotic walking. This study aims to describe the patient perspective of exoskeleton walking for the expert user. METHODS: Focus groups were conducted with 19 participants (group size range 3-4) who had experienced large numbers of exoskeleton walking sessions (>24). The qualitative methodology used an interpretive phenomenological design an

The spatial percept of tinnitus is associated with hearing asymmetry: Subgroup comparisons.

The spatial percept of tinnitus is hypothesized as an important variable for tinnitus subtyping. Hearing asymmetry often associates with tinnitus laterality, but not always. One of the methodological limitations for cross-study comparisons is how the variables for hearing asymmetry and tinnitus spatial perception are defined. In this study, data from two independent datasets were combined (n=833 adults, age ranging from 20 to 91 years, 404 males, 429 females) to investigate characteristics of subgroups with different tinnitus spatial perception focusing on hearing asymmetry. Three principle fi

[The effect of high altitude on human color perception].

Exposure to a high altitude hypoxia environment has significant negative effects on human central nervous system. Many previous studies have explored the influence of the high altitude environment on human color perception in a simulated high altitude environment or in an environment acutely exposed to high altitude, but little has been done in migrators and natives exposed to high altitude and low oxygen for a long period of time. In this study, the minimal-change method was used to examine whether the color perception of red, green, blue and yellow was affected by the high altitude in 30 pla

Enhanced cortical processing of cardio-afferent signals in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To assess cardiac interoception in anorexia nervosa (AN) using a multidimensional approach. METHODS: We assessed the physiological dimensions of cardioception, i.e. the peripheral signal itself (heart rate, HR, and heart rate variability, HRV) and its cortical representation (heartbeat evoked potentials, HEPs), and the psychological dimensions of interoceptive accuracy (heartbeat perception) and interoceptive sensibility (confidence ratings). Electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) were recorded concurrently during rest and while performing a heartbeat perception tas

Exploratory study of HRB signs, patterns, and right-left differences relating to spatial cognition following nonimpact mild traumatic brain injury.

Sweeney and Johnson found that response time on the Tactile Form Recognition Test (TFR) of the Halstead-Reitan Test Battery (HRB) requiring speeded tactile- and visual-spatial recognition was deficient for Nonimpact mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) individuals in comparison to Impact mTBI and No mTBI participants. A follow-up study by Sweeney and Slade noted that skills most sensitive to Deficient TFR performance of mTBI subjects involved tactile-spatial perception, with lateralization of inferior performances contralateral to cerebral regions known to specialize in the spatial skills requir

Excessively delayed maternal reaction after their perception of decreased fetal movements in stillbirths: Population-based study in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Fetal movement is the most common method to evaluate fetal well-being. Furthermore, maternal perception of decreased fetal movements is associated with perinatal demise. Previously, we showed that perception of decreased fetal movements was the most common reason for mothers visiting the outpatient department among those who had stillbirths in our region. Further investigation of stillbirths with decreased fetal movements is essential to find a possible way of preventing stillbirth. AIM: To investigate maternal reaction time after their perceiving decreased fetal movements among s

Higher cortical visual deficits.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the various types of visual dysfunction that can result from lesions of the cerebral regions beyond the striate cortex. RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with dyschromatopsia can exhibit problems with color constancy. The apperceptive form of prosopagnosia is associated with damage to posterior occipital and fusiform gyri, and an associative/amnestic form is linked to damage to more anterior temporal regions. Pure alexia can be accompanied by a surface dysgraphia. New word-length effect criteria distinguish pure alexia from hemianopic dyslexia. Subtler problems

Social communication mediates the relationship between emotion perception and externalizing behaviors in young adult survivors of pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of childhood disability, and is associated with elevated risk for long-term social impairment. Though social (pragmatic) communication deficits may be among the most debilitating consequences of childhood TBI, few studies have examined very long-term communication outcomes as children with TBI make the transition to young adulthood. In addition, the extent to which reduced social function contributes to externalizing behaviors in survivors of childhood TBI remains poorly understood. The present study aimed to evaluate the extent of social communic

Efficacy of theory-based HIV behavioral prevention among rural-to-urban migrants in China: a randomized controlled trial.

Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of a cultural adaptation of a social cognitive theory-based HIV behavioral prevention program among young rural-to-urban migrants in China. The intervention design and assessment were guided by the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT). The intervention was evaluated through a randomized controlled trial with 6-month and 12-month follow-ups. The primary behavioral outcome was the use of condoms. Other outcome measures include HIV knowledge, condom use knowledge, HIV-related perceptions (PMT constructs), and intention to use condom. The mixed-effects regr

Improving residual vision by attentional cueing in patients with brain lesions.

Visual attention is crucial for almost all processes of visual perception, particularly when perception is difficult. We were interested in the effects of cueing spatial attention in patients with cerebral lesions who face difficulties in visual perception in areas of residual vision at the border of visual field defects. In 23 patients with visual field loss due to post-geniculate brain lesions, stimulus detection performance and reaction times were mapped with high-resolution computer-based perimetry. A cueing procedure using Gestalt completion to attract attention to areas of residual visio

Understanding Physical Activity Demands and Reported Perceptions of Fatigue in Children with Developmental Disabilities.

Children with developmental disabilities are less physically active and at increased risk for chronic conditions that physical activity might ameliorate. This study examined the relationships between the impact of physical activity (e.g., muscles burning, body tiredness), physical activity time and fatigue in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Down Syndrome (DS) in comparison to typically developing (TD) children. A convenience sample of children and parents was enrolled. All children were between 4 and 10 years, ambulatory, medically stable, not taking sleep-aid medications and were either
