Optical coherence tomography assessment of disease activity in cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome is a rare autoinflammatory disease caused by gain-of-function mutations or variants in the NLRP3 gene. Clinically, patients suffer from a broad spectrum of both systemic and neurological symptoms. The aim of this study was to determine whether systemic inflammation demonstrated by serum amyloid A (SAA) elevation is associated with neuroinflammation assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS: Thirty eyes of 15 patients with NLRP3 low penetrance mutations (PwNLRP3) and 20 eyes of 10 age- and sex-matched healthy controls

Optical diffraction tomography for assessing single cell models in angular light scattering.

Angularly resolved light scattering (ALS) has become a useful tool for assessing the size and refractive index of biological scatterers at cellular and organelle length scales. Sizing organelle populations with ALS relies on Mie scattering theory models, which require significant assumptions about the object, including spherical scatterers and a homogeneous medium. These assumptions may incur greater error at the single cell level, where there are fewer scatterers to be averaged over. We investigate the validity of these assumptions using 3D refractive index (RI) tomograms measured via optical

Assessment of metacognition and retinal optical coherence tomography findings in shift workers.

It is known that working in the shift system, especially the night shift, affects physical, mental, and social well-being. We investigated the changes in the inner retinal layers and choroidal layer of the eyes of nurses working night and day shifts using optical coherence tomography (OCT). We also explored the effect of night shift work on metacognition and the relationships between these variables. A total of 79 nurses participated in the study, of whom 40 worked night shifts. The researcher gave the participants sociodemographic information and the Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) fo

Line-Field Confocal Optical Coherence Tomography Imaging of Psoriasis With Histopathology Correlation.

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) is a novel imaging technique for in vivo examination of the skin that has recently been introduced in the dermatologic armamentarium of non-invasive diagnostic tools. Its usefulness in the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of some neoplastic, inflammatory, and infectious skin conditions has been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the LC-OCT features of psoriasis in a large number of psoriatic plaques along with their histopathologic correlation. In this retrospective study, the LC-OCT and the corresponding histopatholo

Role of optical coherence tomography angiography in retinal tumors: A narrative review.

Intraocular tumors constitute a small subset of cases in ophthalmologic practice. Proper diagnosis of intraocular tumors is crucial because some pose threat to vision and life, while others may indicate underlying systemic disorders. Intraocular tumors comprise benign and malignant lesions affecting the retina, choroid, optic disc, iris, and ciliary body. Retinal tumors can be classified as vascular, neural, glial, and retinal pigment epithelial tumors. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a noninvasive imaging modality employed in diagnosis and management of retinal and choroida

Retinal changes in multiple sclerosis: An optical coherence tomography and angiography study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with neuroaxonal damage. It is the principal driver of non-traumatic disability in young adults. Visual symptoms are common and optic neuritis (ON) may be the revealing feature in up to 30% of cases. Structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) represents a biomarker of central nervous system neurodegeneration in MS. OCT-angiography (OCT-A) is a noninvasive tool allowing the study of retinal vasculature and the detection of microvascular damage in neuro-retinal diseases. In this study, we

Quantitative Evaluation of Caries and Calculus with Ultrahigh-Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography.

Dental caries on the crown's surface is caused by the interaction of bacteria and carbohydrates, which then gradually alter the tooth's structure. In addition, calculus is the root of periodontal disease. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been considered to be a promising tool for identifying dental caries; however, diagnosing dental caries in the early stage still remains challenging. In this study, we proposed an ultrahigh-resolution OCT (UHR-OCT) system with axial and transverse resolutions of 2.6 and 1.8 μm for differentiating the early-stage dental caries and calculus. The same teeth

A two-stage framework for optical coherence tomography angiography image quality improvement.

INTRODUCTION: Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA) is a new non-invasive imaging modality that gains increasing popularity for the observation of the microvasculatures in the retina and the conjunctiva, assisting clinical diagnosis and treatment planning. However, poor imaging quality, such as stripe artifacts and low contrast, is common in the acquired OCTA and in particular Anterior Segment OCTA (AS-OCTA) due to eye microtremor and poor illumination conditions. These issues lead to incomplete vasculature maps that in turn makes it hard to make accurate interpretation and subsequen
