Utilizing the deuterium-tritium fusion resonance to diagnose thermal runaway in igniting plasmas.

For high-efficiency inertial confinement fusion implosions, it is predicted that a burning hot spot will successfully encompass all surrounding fuel and then transition into a thermal runaway where the internal energy increase from fusion occurs on a timescale faster than the expansion of the fuel is able to quench the fusion chain reaction after ignition occurs. Observation of this dynamic phase transition would indicate distinct burn properties and indicate an implosion's robustness. A technique for diagnosing the presence of thermal runaway from measurements of nuclear reaction history is p

Confined Solvation Electrolyte for 4.3-V-Class High-Voltage Sodium-Ion Pouch Cells.

P2-type layered transition metal oxides (NaxTMO2 TM are transition metal elements) are air-stability and low-cost but intrinsically limited in capacity, necessitating elevated charging voltages to unlock deeper Na+ extraction and higher energy density. However, practical high-voltage operation over wide temperature ranges is impeded by sluggish Na+ desolvation, aggravated parasitic reactions, and rapid cycling degradation. Here, we identify 1,1,1-trifluoro-N,N-dimethylmethanesulfonamide (Me2TFMSA) as a polar inducer that restructures Na+ solvation by confining carbonate molecules predominantly

Mechanical Sensing of Metamagnetic Tricriticality in Two-Dimensional CrI_{3}.

Layered Ising metamagnets are antiferromagnetic (AF) materials consisting of monolayer Ising ferromagnets coupled to each other via interlayer AF interactions. They exhibit rich magnetic phase diagrams, featuring tricritical and critical end points, due to the competing magnetic interactions and the Ising anisotropy. While conventional thermodynamic probes can identify these critical points in bulk Ising metamagnets, achieving this in the two-dimensional (2D) limit, where enhanced fluctuation effects can substantially modify critical phenomena, remains to be realized. Here, we combine a nanome

Large Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy Induced by an Intersite Charge Transfer in Strained EuVO2H Films.

Perovskite oxides ABO3 continue to be a major focus in materials science. Of particular interest is the interplay between A and B cations as … ng layers of EuH and VO2. A bulk EuVO2H behaves as a ferromagnetic insulator with a relatively high transition temperature (TC) of 10 K. However, the application of external pressure to the EuIIVIIIO2H bulk or compressive strain from the substrate in the thin films induces ICT from the EuIIH layer to the VIIIO2 layer due to the extended empty V dxy orbital. The ICT phen …

Metabolic Peculiarities of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis Dimorphism as Demonstrated by iTRAQ Labeling Proteomics.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a systemic mycosis with a high incidence in Latin America, is caused by thermodimorphic fungi of the Paracoccidioides genus. The contact with host occurs by the inhalation of conidia or mycelial propagules which once reaching the pulmonary alveoli differentiate into yeast cells. This transition process is vital in the pathogenesis of PCM allowing the fungus survival in the host. Thus, the present work performed a comparative proteome analysis of mycelia, mycelia-to-yeast transition, and yeast cells of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. For that, tryptic peptides were

The effect of anaesthetics on the dynamic heterogeneity of lipid membranes.

The influence of membrane-perturbing drugs such as anaesthetics on the lipid membrane properties is analyzed theoretically on the basis of a … acroscopically the effect of anaesthetics on the membrane properties is seen in a depression of the transition temperature and a smearing of thermodynamic response functions like the specific heat. Microscopically the calculations reveal that anaesthetics have a high affinity to the fluctuating domain interfaces that are dominated by kink-like lipid-chain conformations. …

Thermally driven isosymmetric phase transitions and structure-bioactivity relationships in a hybrid tetrachlorocuprate(II).

An isosymmetric hybrid material, 2-amino-5-ammoniopyridinium tetrachlorocuprate(II), has been synthesized and comprehensively investigated with respect to its structural, thermal, dielectric, biological, and theoretical properties. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies performed at four temperatures (293-393 K) reveal that the compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Cmca and is composed of polymeric zig-zag [CuCl4]2- chains adopting a distorted square-pyramidal (4+1) coordination geometry, strongly influenced by Jahn-Teller effects and temperature-dependent chlorine disorder.

Heat treatment-induced autophagy promotes breast cancer cell invasion and metastasis via TGF-β2-mediated epithelial-mesenchymal transitions.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient thermal ablation can accelerate malignant behaviors and metastases in some solid tumors, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and autophagy are involved in tumor metastasis. It has been found that TGF-β2 which belongs to the family of transforming growth factors often associated with cancer cell invasiveness and EMT. However, whether the interactions between autophagy and TGF-β2 induce EMT in breast cancer (BC) cells following insufficient microwave ablation (MWA) remains unclear. METHODS: BC cells were treated with sublethal heat treatment to simulate insuffic

Development of high-resolution melting (HRM) assay to differentiate the species of Shigella isolates from stool and food samples.

Shigella species, a group of intracellular foodborne pathogens, are the main causes of bacillary dysentery and shigellosis in humans worldwide. It is essential to determine the species of Shigella in outbreaks and food safety surveillance systems. The available immunological and molecular methods for identifying Shigella species are relatively complicated, expensive and time-consuming. High resolution melting (HRM) assay is a rapid, cost-effective, and easy to perform PCR-based method that has recently been used for the differentiation of bacterial species. In this study, we designed and devel

Detection and identification of old world Leishmania by high resolution melt analysis.

BACKGROUND: Three major forms of human disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis, visceral leishmaniasis and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, are caused by several leishmanial species whose geographic distribution frequently overlaps. These Leishmania species have diverse reservoir hosts, sand fly vectors and transmission patterns. In the Old World, the main parasite species responsible for leishmaniasis are Leishmania infantum, L. donovani, L. tropica, L. aethiopica and L. major. Accurate, rapid and sensitive diagnostic and identification procedures are crucial for the detection of infection and character

High-resolution melt-curve analysis of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD-HRM) for the characterisation of pathogenic leptospires: intra-serovar divergence, inter-serovar convergence, and evidence of attenuation in Leptospira reference collections.

High-resolution melt-curve analysis of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD-HRM) is a novel technology that has emerged as a possible method to characterise leptospires to serovar level. RAPD-HRM has recently been used to measure intra-serovar convergence between strains of the same serovar as well as inter-serovar divergence between strains of different serovars. The results indicate that intra-serovar heterogeneity and inter-serovar homogeneity may limit the application of RAPD-HRM in routine diagnostics. They also indicate that genetic attenuation of aged, high-passage-number isolates cou

The conversion of helix H2 to beta-sheet is accelerated in the monomer and dimer of the prion protein upon T183A mutation.

The conversion of the prion protein (PrP) from its cellular form, PrPC, to its pathogenic scrapie form, PrPSc, is a key event in neurodegenerative transmissible spongiform encephalopathies such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). PrPC is characterized by three helices (H1-H3) and a small antiparallel beta-sheet. One working hypothesis for TSE causation is that oligomeric forms of PrP are the proximate neurotoxic agents. Because these states are transient in character, current experimental studies have failed to provide atomic structures. To gain insights into these intermediates, we have studi

The molecular basis of pharmacological chaperoning in human α-galactosidase.

Fabry disease patients show a deficiency in the activity of the lysosomal enzyme α-galactosidase (α-GAL or α-Gal A). One proposed treatment for Fabry disease is pharmacological chaperone therapy, where a small molecule stabilizes the α-GAL protein, leading to increased enzymatic activity. Using enzyme kinetics, tryptophan fluorescence, circular dichroism, and proteolysis assays, we show that the pharmacological chaperones 1-deoxygalactonojirimycin (DGJ) and galactose stabilize the human α-GAL glycoprotein. Crystal structures of complexes of α-GAL and chaperones explain the molecular basis for

Concerted Deoligomerization and Nonfunctional Reassembly of the Hexameric Proteasomal ATPase Mpa upon Chemical and Thermal Perturbation.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis Mpa is an AAA+ ATPase that unfolds and translocates substrate proteins during proteasomal degradation. Mpa spontaneously assembles into a homohexamer driven by interdomain interactions, even in the absence of a nucleotide. To dissect the mechanisms underlying its oligomerization and deoligomerization, we perturbed the system using chemical and thermal denaturants and monitored the oligomeric states by far-UV CD, fluorescence, calorimetry, state-of-the-art single-particle mass photometry, and ATPase activity assays. Equilibrium chemical denaturation resulted in gradua

Detection of atomic oxygen and its electronic coherence decays using time-resolved ultrafast coherent Raman scattering.

We report the detection of atomic oxygen and quantitative measurements of its electronic Raman coherence decays in flames and low-temperature plasmas using time-resolved hybrid femtosecond/picosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS). Atomic oxygen was detected using the Raman transitions between the spin-orbit coupled triplet ground states. Atomic oxygen was generated in an H2/O2/Ar diffusion flame and an O2/Ar pulsed plasma discharge. Single exponential decays were observed for the O(3P2)-O(3P1) Raman transition at 158.3 cm-1 and the O(3P2)-O(3P0) Raman transition at 227 cm-1. Fro
