Long-term impacts of prenatal maternal immune activation and postnatal maternal separation on maternal behavior in adult female rats: Relevance to postpartum mental disorders.

Early life adversities are known to exert long-term negative impacts on psychological and brain functions in adulthood. The present work examined how a prenatal brain insult and a postnatal stressor independently or interactively influence the quality of maternal care of postpartum female rats and their cognitive and emotional functions, as a way to identify the behavioral dysfunctions underlying childhood trauma-induced postpartum mental disorders (as indexed by impaired maternal care). Sprague-Dawley female offspring born from mother rats exposed to polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (PolyI:C,

Potential Risk of Calcified Nanoparticles for Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection after Minimally Invasive Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy for Renal Calculi.

Among urolithiasis, urolithiasis is a more extensive and difficult to treat disease. In recent years, with the development of endoscopic equipment and related surgical methods, a new treatment, namely minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy, appears and is widely used in the treatment of renal calculi. It has been developed for more than 50 years since its appearance. Its advantages are a high stone clearance rate, small surgical trauma, fewer intraoperative and postoperative complications, and a short recovery time for postoperative patients. It is widely used in clinical treatment. T

Predictors and rates of PTSD, depression and anxiety in UK frontline health and social care workers during COVID-19.

Background: Studies have shown that working in frontline healthcare roles during epidemics and pandemics was associated with PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to identify demographic, work-related and other predictors for clinically significant PTSD, depression, and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic in UK frontline health and social care workers (HSCWs), and to compare rates of distress across different groups of HCSWs working in different roles and settings. Methods: A convenience sample (n = 1194) of frontline UK HC

The Michigan infant mental health home visiting model.

Selma Fraiberg's pioneering work with infants, toddlers, and families over 40 years ago led to the development of a field in which professionals from multiple disciplines learned to work with or on behalf of infants, very young children, their parents, and the relationships that bind them together. The intent was to promote social and emotional health through enhancing the security of early developing parent-child relationships in the first years of life (Fraiberg, 2018). Called infant mental health (IMH), practitioners from fields of health, education, social work, psychology, human developme

Primary anastomosis in difficult cases of type "C" esophageal atresia: The atraumatic microvascular clamp technique of minimal tension with good outcome.

BACKGROUND: Surgical maneuvers for esophageal anastomosis in difficult cases of Gross type "C" esophageal atresia (EA) are challenging. The methods of early primary anastomosis are technically difficult and staged surgeries expose the child to repeated general anesthesia with problems of nursing care. We describe a simple method of partial disconnection of the lower esophagus from the fistula followed by approximation by an atraumatic microvascular clamp. The suitability of this method and its outcomes are discussed. METHODS: It was a prospective observational study that included 32 patients

Early complications of preoperative external traction fixation in the staged treatment of tibial fractures: A series of 402 cases.

BACKGROUND: Different external skeletal fixators have been widely used in preoperative traction of high-energy tibial fractures prior to a definitive surgical treatment. However, the early complications associated with this staged treatment for traction and soft tissue injury recovery have rarely been discussed. AIM: To analyze the early complications associated with preoperative external traction fixation in the staged treatment of tibial fractures. METHODS: A total of 402 patients with high-energy tibial fractures treated using preoperative external traction fixation at a Level 1 trauma ce

Exploring standardisation, monitoring and training of medical devices in assisted vaginal birth studies: protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Assisted vaginal birth (AVB) can markedly improve maternal and neonatal outcomes arising from complications in the second stage of labour. Historically, both forceps and ventouse devices have been used to assist birth; however, they are not without risk and are associated with complications, such as cephalohaematoma, retinal haemorrhage and perineal trauma. As new devices are developed to overcome the limitations of existing techniques, it is necessary to establish their efficacy and effectiveness within randomised controlled trials (RCTs). A major challenge of evaluating complex

Acute Urinary Obstruction in a Tetraplegic Patient from Misplacement of Catheter in Urethra.

A male tetraplegic patient attended accident and emergency with a blocked catheter; on removing the catheter, he passed bloody urine. After three unsuccessful attempts were made to insert a catheter by nursing staff, a junior doctor inserted a three-way Foley catheter with a 30-mL balloon but inflated the balloon with 10 mL of water to commence the bladder irrigation. The creatinine level was mostly 19 µmol/L (range: 0-135 µmol/L) but increased to 46 µmol/L on day 7. Computerized tomography urogram revealed that the bilateral hydronephrosis with hydroureter was extended down to urinary bladder

Principle mechanisms underlying venous thromboembolism: epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology and pathogenesis.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are distinct but related aspects of the same dynamic disease process known as venous thromboembolism (VTE). An estimated 200,000 new cases occur in the United States every year, including 94,000 with PE, resulting in an incidence of 23 per 100,000 patients per year-cases. Without treatment, pulmonary embolism is associated with a mortality rate of approximately 30%, causing nearly 50,000 deaths per year. Moreover, based on post-mortem studies, two-thirds of the patients with pulmonary emboli remain undiagnosed. Clinically, PE may present a

Headache disorders among Indigenous communities: A scoping review undertaken with knowledge keeper guidance.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a scoping review of literature on headache etiology, classification, prevalence, and treatment in Indigenous communities in Canada, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. BACKGROUND: In the United States, analysis of national prevalence indicates that Indigenous Americans lead all other racial/ethnic groups in headache prevalence. Risk factors associated with headache burden, including diabetes, head injury, psychological trauma, environmental exposures, and lack of access to appropriate diagnosis and treatment, have been documented in Indigenous communities ac

Trauma-informed family carer education and practical skills training in dementia: a systematic scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The incurable and progressive nature of dementia requires complex care, the majority of which is provided via informal caring by family members within the family home. Carers experience significant stress absorbing the challenging care needs of their family member and require education and training that can support and sustain family caring arrangements while considering the psychological distress that threatens caring breakdown. The aim of this scoping review was to map the evidence of trauma-informed principles within education and practical skills training in dementia family c

Nitroprusside in resuscitation of major torso trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with thoracic aortic injury (TAI) usually have sustained other major trauma, and may require aggressive shock resuscitation. In the 24 hours after aortic repair and during resuscitation, our cardiothoracic surgeons request intravenous nitroprusside to maintain mean arterial pressure (MAP) less than 90 mm Hg to minimize bleeding at the repair. We compared the resuscitation response of patients who sustained major torso trauma (MTT) and TAI with that of patients who had MTT with no TAI to determine whether nitroprusside can effectively control MAP during resuscitation and whe

Post-surgical Comparison of Volumetric Analysis in Orbital Fractures with Conventional and Advanced Management.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor dysfunction is a disorder predominantly affecting females. It is common and undermines the quality of lives of at least one-third of adult women and is a growing component of women's health care needs. Identifying and supporting these needs is a major public health issue with a strong psychosocial and economic basis. The importance of the interdependence of mechanical, neural, endocrine and environmental factors in the development of pelvic floor dysfunction is well recognized. There is a paucity of data investigating the true prevalence, incidence, specific risk facto

Preventing secondary complications in trauma patients with implementation of a multidisciplinary mobilization team.

Management of the trauma patient is complex. Immobility or bed rest has detrimental effects on multiple body systems. Early mobilization, especially in the multi-injured patient, can be challenging requiring a multidisciplinary team effort. Health care team members' and patient's understanding and perceptions of bed rest greatly influence successful early mobilization. Integrating a multidisciplinary mobility program in the acute care setting can decrease secondary complications and hospital length of stay ultimately improving patient outcomes. Using the strategy for translating research into
