OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis isolated to the head and neck region is common in patients with HIV infection. However, the management of isolated head and neck tuberculosis has not been reported in the literature. This study was done to describe the characteristics of tuberculosis isolated to the head and neck region in patients infected with HIV and to detect differences in presentation and diagnostic management based on the status of HIV infection at presentation.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed including 38 patients infected with HIV who were seen with tuberculosis isolated to the he

Seven cases of miliary tuberculosis in patients with hematologic disease were analyzed clinicopathologically. Mean age of the patients was 65 years, and the hematologic diseases were CML, AML, ALL, MDS and malignant lymphoma. Diabetes mellitus was present as a complication in three patients. Miliary tuberculosis was found in 5 cases during the first admission to our hospital owing to hematologic problems. In 4 of 6 cases, fever had started more than two months before admission, consequently, the tuberculosis probably began about that time. After admission, chemotherapy was administered in 5 ca

It is uncommon to get lumbosacral junction deformity due to tuberculosis. Lumbosacral junction alignment is of paramount importance in maintaining global sagittal balance. In this case report, we present a case of a 42-year-old woman with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis of lumbosacral spine with complete destruction of L3, L4 and L5 vertebra with partial destruction of L2 and S1 vertebra leading to significant shortening and lumbosacral kyphosis. The patient had severe axial low back pain, inability to sleep in supine position due to deformity and difficulty in walking due to loss of spinal a

We appreciate the comments written regarding our paper, "Review of spinal involvement in Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO): What radiologists need to know about CRMO and its imitators". In this paper, we review multiple categories of mimics of CRMO. Although we do mention infectious etiology as a group, we did not specifically mention tuberculosis affecting the spine which is an important mimic of CRMO, and we acknowledge this omission.

BACKGROUND: Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) are commonly used for chronic low back pain but can rarely lead to serious infectious complications. Reactivation of latent tuberculous spondylodiscitis after ESI is uncommon. Our case highlights diagnostic challenges of underlying spinal infection prior to interventional pain procedures.
CASE REPORT: A 43-year-old woman presented with low back and radicular pain. There were no constitutional symptoms, and baseline laboratory findings were unremarkable. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed Modic-type degenerative changes and nerve root

Spinal cord syndromes with a mainly syringomyelic pattern of sensory diorders, radiculopathies, mixed paresis of varying degree (without any history of trauma), have been found in 507 out of 1305 new patients referred to out Clinic from January 1976 till 31 October 1977. In 105 randomised and unselected cases with these syndromes, myelographies have disclosed findings compatible with an adhesive spinal and/or cisternal arachnoiditis. A prospective study of the syndromes for evidence of infectious aetiology has been performed, in which tuberculosis, syphilis and other infections appear to be ca

This case report describes a patient presenting with symptoms of progressive paresis of both legs. An X-ray of the thorax demonstrated an aspect consistent with miliary tuberculosis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracic spine revealed medullary compression. The patient underwent a laminectomy and the diagnosis of spinal epidural tuberculoma was made. The patient has been treated with isoniazid, rifampicin and pyrazinamide. After a period of six months, she made a complete recovery.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 63-year-old man presented with fever, thoracalgia, weight loss, diffuse lymphadenopathy, and a massive pleural effusion. Extensive laboratory and radiologic investigations for possible autoimmune, infectious, hematologic, and neoplastic conditions all resulted negative. A lymph node biopsy showed a granulomatous necrotizing lymphadenitis, suspicious for tuberculosis. Although mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) was never isolated and tuberculin skin test resulted negative, diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis was made and anti-tubercular therapy was started. In developing countries hydatidosis is both a medical and economic problem related to environmental hygiene and healthy veterinary practice. This cestode parasitic infestation, uncommonly involving the nervous system, presents with varied clinical manifestation, at times causing diagnostic dilemmas. Multiple intracranial and spinal hydatidosis is rare. A series of 29 histologically confirmed cases of hydatidosis of neuraxis (21 intracranial and 8 spinal) from South India are presented. Among the 21 cases of intracranial hydatidosis, 12 cases were in pediatric age, while only 1 spinal lesion wa

Two patients with suspected tuberculous spondylitis and one patient with previous Pott's disease were evaluated preoperatively with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The MRI provided more exact anatomic localization of vertebral and paravertebral tuberculous abscesses in multiple planes not previously available with more conventional diagnostic methods in the patients with suspected tuberculous spondylitis. This was helpful for localization in planning of surgical approaches. In the patient with previous Pott's disease, spinal cord compression was detected using MRI, which showed no evidence o

In developed countries tuberculosis has not yet been eradicated and diagnostic problems still remain. The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical pattern, epidemiological data and risk factors in 85 patients (59 males and 26 females, mean age 41 +/- 15 years) seen from 1975-1984 in the medical outpatient clinic of Basle with the diagnosis of tuberculosis. The organ distribution of the tuberculosis was as following: lung n = 54, cervical lymph nodes n = 9, pleura n = 7, peritoneum n = 3, endometrium n = 2, bones n = 2, pericardium n = 1, middle ear n = 1, urinary tract n = 1, skin n =

BACKGROUND: The relative frequency of compressive and non-compressive myelopathies and their aetiologies have not been evaluated extensively in most sub-Saharan African countries. The case of Cameroon is studied.
METHODS: Admission registers and case records of patients in the neurology and neurosurgery departments of the study hospital were reviewed from January 1999 to December 2006.
RESULTS: 224 (9.7% of all admissions) cases were non-traumatic paraplegia/paraparesis or tetraplegia/tetraparesis and 147 were due to myelopathies, representing 6.3% of all cases admitted during the study peri

STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
PURPOSE: To evaluate sagittal balance, pulmonary function, and spinopelvic parameters in patients with healed spinal tuberculosis with severe thoracic kyphosis.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Deterioration of neurological function is an absolute indication of surgical intervention in severe post-tubercular kyphosis, but the relationship of compromise in lung function and spinal alignment with severity of kyphosis is still unclear.
METHODS: Twenty patients (age, 14-60 years) with healed spinal tuberculosis with thoracic kyphosis >50° were included. Lateral-view

BACKGROUND: Although the incidence and cure rate of spinal hydatidosis are low, the recurrence rate of spinal hydatidosis is high, and the prognosis of spinal hydatidosis is poor. Therefore, we report a typical case of refractory spinal hydatidosis to increase spine surgeons' awareness of the disease and reduce misdiagnosis and recurrence.
CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old man presented with back pain, significant weight loss, and paralysis of both lower limbs. The patient was misdiagnosed with spinal tuberculosis in an outside hospital. However, spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed hyper
