In 12 nonpregnant women, total iodine, protein-bound iodine, inorganic iodine, and thyroxine values were measured in serum before and 15, 30 … monogenesis, and the fetal and neonatal thyroid glands are especially sensitive. In pregnant women, vaginitis should not be treated with povidone-iodine because of the possible development of iodine-induced goiter and hypothyroidism in the fetus and newborn. The risk is especially high when povidone-iodine is used repeatedly.

The proper diagnosis and treatment of a patient with vaginal agenesis demands a thorough knowledge of the relevant embryology, anatomy and physiology as well as sensitivity to the potentially emotionally devastating effects of the condition. A series is described of 150 cases of sterilization through posterior colpotomy. The operation was mainly elective or postabortal. The average hospital stay was short--1 or 2 days and complications were few-mainly pelvic peritonitis. There was only 1 death in the series covering 5 years--from peritonitis. The method is recommended for widespread use throughout the country both in rural and urban centres.

A preliminary trial was conducted, using yoghurt to assess its potential for the management of vaginal discharge. The results were encouraging in non-specific vaginal discharge and warrant further investigation.
