The histopathology of the temporal bone of an eight and one-half-year-old girl with osteopetrosis (Albers-Schönberg disease) was studied to evaluate the pathogenesis of its frequent complications in hearing and facial nerve function. The patient was blind and had acute otitis media, but facial paralysis was not noted. Although the size of the temporal bone pyramid was markedly increased due to enormously thickened periosteal layer, changes in the endosteal and endochondral layers were less marked. Exostotic growth of periosteal bone was seen in the middle ear wall, and the tympanic cavity appe

Alcohol consumption significantly impairs postural stability by disrupting vestibular function, increasing the risk of falls. This study investigated the feasibility of using galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) to mitigate alcohol-induced postural instability in healthy adults, employing acute alcohol intake as a transient model of vestibular dysfunction. Sixty participants were assigned to groups with or without alcohol consumption (estimated blood alcohol concentration [BAC] 0.06%-0.08%) and randomly received one of three GVS types: random noise (rnGVS), direct current plus random noise (r

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is often preceded by vestibular disorders. We applied galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) and related stimulus-evoked activity to individual ratings of perceived motion for each stimulus and to perceived egomotion thresholds by GVS and behavioural parameters outside the scanner: levels of functional disability by standardized questionnaires, visual motion coherence, passive egomotion perception by chair rotation and quantitative postural stability. We hypothesized that the preceding vestibular disorder predisposes to abnormal brain excitability

OBJECTIVE: Emerging reports show that personal listening device usage causes vestibular impairment. This study aims to investigate the effect of personal listening device usage on vestibular impairment.
METHODS: Subjects between 13 and 25 years were recruited. Each subject underwent a personal listening device usage questionnaire and quantification of sound exposure level, followed by a series of vestibular tests. Statistical analyses were performed to identify the association between personal listening device characteristics, sound exposure level and vestibular function.
RESULTS: A total of

INTRODUCTION: Postural balance impairment can affect the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease. Previous studies have described connections of the vestibular system with postural functions, suggesting a potential participation of the basal ganglia in receiving vestibular stimuli. This systematic review aims to summarize the evidence on the effectiveness of vestibular rehabilitation on postural balance in patients with Parkinson's disease.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using the electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, Scopus and PEDro. The study selection was independ

HYPOTHESIS: Prosthetic electrical stimulation can evoke compensatory eye and head movement despite vestibular implant electrode insertion occurring years after prior labyrinthectomy.
BACKGROUND: Vestibular implants sense head rotation and directly stimulate the vestibular nerve, bypassing damaged end organs. Animal research and current clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of this approach. However, candidacy criteria for vestibular implants currently require presence of a patent labyrinth in the candidate ear and at least aidable hearing in the opposite ear, thus excluding patients

OBJECTIVES: Evaluate the rate of preserved vestibular function in pediatric cochlear implant surgery.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
METHODS: Pre- and post-operative vestibular tests were compared in children who underwent cochlear implantation at a tertiary level pediatric hospital over a 4-year period.
RESULTS: Data from 59 implanted ears in 44 children was included. Median age was 2.8 years at initial testing (range 7 months - 21 years) with 1:1 male/female ratio. Implant surgeries were 26 unilateral, 13 bilateral simultaneous, and 5 bilateral sequential. The majority were impl
