Pulmonary delivery of siRNA lipoplexes and lipid nanoparticles using a vibrating mesh nebuliser.

Inhalation via nebulisation is a promising method to deliver high concentrations of siRNA to the lung epithelium in a direct and non-invasive manner for the treatment of numerous respiratory-related illnesses. However, nebulisation can be destructive towards siRNA nanocarriers leading to loss of siRNA and a diminished therapeutic outcome. Herein, we sought to explore how the nebulisation process, including adjustments in aerosol droplet size impacts the physicochemical properties of several lipid-based siRNA nanocarrier formulations. These included PEGylated and non-PEGylated cationic DOTAP-ba

Study on the cocrystal of arginine and acetylsalicylic acid using vibrational spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Drug repositioning and reuse is a cost-effective strategy for the development of new drugs, and drug co-crystal is a fast and effective tech … crystal, which proved the formation of the cocrystal. Understanding the basic properties of lattice vibration during the eutectic process is challenging, yet it can be accomplished through theoretical calculations. By employing density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, the molecular configurations and vibration spectra of the two drug cocrystals can be …

Vibrational and electronic spectral analysis of Hepcidin-25 hormone: Perspectives for hyperinflammation diagnosis.

The hormone hepcidin-25 is a molecule that regulates iron metabolism. It is present in biofluids and it is a hyperinflammation marker for critical pathological states such as anaphylaxis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, autoimmune diseases, sepsis, and COVID-19, among others. Its fast detection and quantification are of key importance in health strategies for fatality prediction. Vibrational spectroscopy techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopies are potential options for point-of-care detection of this key hormone. Here, we present FTIR and Raman experi…

Simulations of low-frequency vibration pattern at the inner ear for activation of the vestibular system.

Vestibular stimulation is a promising method for mitigating motion sickness and assessing vestibular function. However, conventional methods such as galvanic, caloric, or bone conduction (BC) stimulation lack the spatial selectivity needed to replicate the precise inputs of natural head movements. In this study, a novel approach is proposed using multiple BC transducers with coordinated magnitude and phase to generate targeted vestibular motions. A validated finite element model of the human head was employed to simulate vestibular responses to stimuli from four transducer locations. A genetic

Whole body vibrations and lower back pain: a systematic review of the current literature.

INTRODUCTION: Whole body vibration (WBV) is thought to be associated with low back pain (LBP). To mitigate against this the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) have created the ISO 2631 standard, recommending safe dose limits. The aim of this research is to conduct a systematic review of available literature addressing the question, is WBV associated with LBP? METHODS: A literature search was performed from January 1970 until April 2022, including studies focusing on LBP and sciatica in association with WBV, looking specifically for ones reporting on military populations. Stu…

The effects and possible mechanisms of whole-body vibration on cognitive function: A narrative review.

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a physical stimulation method that transmits mechanical oscillations to the entire body through a vibration platform or device. Biokinetic and epidemiologic studies have shown that prolonged exposure to high-intensity WBV increases health risks, primarily to the lumbar spine and the nervous system connected to it. There is currently insufficient evidence to demonstrate a quantitative relationship between vibration exposure and risk of health effects. The positive effects of WBV on increasing muscle strength and improving balance and flexibility are well known, but…

Acoustic, aerodynamic, and vibrational effects of ventricular folds adduction in an ex vivo experiment.

OBJECTIVES: The excessive adduction of ventricular folds has been observed in patients with dysphonia and professional singers. Whether these changes in the ventricular folds are the cause or just a result of disease progression remains unclear, and their potential pathological and physiological implications are yet to be determined. This study aimed to examine the impact of different degrees of ventricular adduction on acoustics, aerodynamics, and vocal fold vibration. METHODS: The excised models of mild and severe ventricular adduction were established. We recorded the vibration pattern of …

A vibrating ingestible bioelectronic stimulator modulates gastric stretch receptors for illusory satiety.

Effective therapies for obesity require invasive surgical and endoscopic interventions or high patient adherence, making it challenging for patients with obesity to effectively manage their disease. Gastric mechanoreceptors sense distension of the stomach and perform volume-dependent vagal signaling to initiate the gastric phase and influence satiety. In this study, we developed a new luminal stimulation modality to specifically activate these gastric stretch receptors to elicit a vagal afferent response commensurate with mechanical distension. We designed the Vibrating Ingestible BioElectroni

Practical back-analysis methodology to predict underground train-induced building vibrations.

The vehicle-track interaction leads to the vibrating source for the prediction of train-induced building vibrations. To prevent modeling difficulties in the source part, this study proposes a practical back-analysis methodology for calculating underground train-induced building vibrations. The methodology combines the advantages of field measurements and numerical simulations. The fundamental concept of the hybrid methodology is to first create a virtualized moving source at the rail surface and subsequently modify it until the numerical predictions are consistent with the field measurements a…

Raman Probing the Local Ultrastrong Coupling of Vibrational Plasmon Polaritons on Metallic Gratings.

Strong coupling of molecular vibrations with light creates polariton states, enabling control over many optical and chemical properties. However, the near-field signatures of strong coupling are difficult to map as most cavities are closed systems. Surface-enhanced Raman microscopy of open metallic gratings under vibrational strong coupling enables the observation of spatial polariton localization in the grating near field, without the need for scanning probe microscopies. The lower polariton is localized at the grating slots, displays a strongly asymmetric line shape, and gives greater plasmo…

Diagnostics of Bolted Joints in Vibrating Screens Based on a Multi-Body Dynamical Model.

The condition-based maintenance of vibrating screens requires new methods of their elements' diagnostics due to severe disturbances in measured signals from vibrators and falling pieces of material. The bolted joints of the sieving deck, when failed, require a lot of time and workforce for repair. In this research, the authors proposed the model-based diagnostic method based on modal analysis of the 2-DOF system, which accounts for the interaction of the screen body and the upper deck under conditions of bolted joint degradation. It is shown that the second natural mode with an out-of-phase mo

Mechanical vibration as an adjunct to clear aligner treatment for accelerating tooth movement: A review.

Many patients, particularly adults, may prefer clear aligner treatment due to its esthetics and ease of use. Some studies have shown that mechanical vibration can affect the rate of tooth movement and other aspects of orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this systematic review was to substantiate the effects of vibration as an adjunct to clear aligner treatment. A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, and Scopus and also hand searching of reference lists was conducted for finding published studies up to March 2021. Two authors reviewed the titles and abstracts independ…
