A comparison of the Task Demonstration Model and the Standard Prompting Hierarchy in teaching word identification to persons with moderate retardation.

Six persons with moderate mental retardation were taught to identify three words by each of two different procedures. One, the Task Demonstration Model, was a fading procedure which relied on presenting many examples of both the correct and incorrect words while systematically increasing their similarity. The other, the Standard Prompting Hierarchy, is one of the most common procedures for teaching persons with mental retardation, and relied on a least-to-most intrusive prompting hierarchy. Data were presented in three phases and show that the Task Demonstration Model produced fewer errors in

Influence of Semantic Richness on Word Form Learning in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) show a word form learning deficit, characterized by inaccurate and variable productions of novel words. We investigated whether, when a novel word form is introduced, incremental exposure to either a sparse visual referent or a relatively semantically rich story influences the phonetic accuracy and the phonological and articulatory variability of production in children with DLD and their typically developing (TD) peers. METHOD: Thirty-six preschoolers (18 DLD, 18 TD) aged 4;1-5;11 (years;months) were exposed to six novel words, two

The Impact of Diverse Parameters for Late Talker Identification in a Low-Socioeconomic Status Sample.

PURPOSE: Children who have late language emergence, or are late talkers (LTs), have substantially lower vocabulary levels than their peers, on average. Notably, differences in how researchers define who comprises LTs can lead to inconsistencies across findings. The current study examined how the number of children identified as LTs differs when using different parameters for identification in a low-socioeconomic status (SES) sample. METHOD: Low-SES mothers (n = 238) completed the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories: Words and Sentences (CDI:WS) as part of a larger longitudin…

Four-year-old Cantonese-speaking children's online processing of relative clauses: a permutation analysis.

We report on an eye-tracking study that investigated four-year-old Cantonese-speaking children's online processing of subject and object relative clauses (RCs). Children's eye-movements were recorded as they listened to RC structures identifying a unique referent (e.g. "Can you pick up the horse that pushed the pig?"). Two RC types, classifier (CL) and ge3 RCs, were tested in a between-participants design. The two RC types differ in their syntactic analyses and frequency of occurrence, providing an important point of comparison for theories of RC acquisition and processing. A permutation analy

Reliability, validity and normative data of the Italian version of the Bus Story test.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation of the reliability and the validity of the Italian version of the Bus Story Test (I-BST), providing normative data in Italian children. METHODS: A total of 552 normally developing children (278 males and 274 females) aged 3; 6 to 9; 0 years, were enrolled. Test-retest, intra- and inter-rater reliability were analysed on a sample of respectively 145, 178 and 178 children. Normative data were gathered from all the enrolled children and estimate centiles according to the CG-LMS method provided. The children were divided into 11 age classes of six months each; percentile sc

Pathways to lexical ambiguity: fMRI evidence for bilateral fronto-parietal involvement in language processing.

Numerous functional neuroimaging studies reported increased activity in the pars opercularis and the pars triangularis (Brodmann's areas 44 and 45) of the left hemisphere during the performance of linguistic tasks. The role of these areas in the right hemisphere in language processing is not understood and, although there is evidence from lesion studies that the right hemisphere is involved in the appreciation of semantic relations, no specific anatomical substrate has yet been identified. This event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging study compared brain activity during the perform

Examining the predictive validity of a dynamic assessment of decoding to forecast response to tier 2 intervention.

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of a dynamic assessment (DA) of decoding in predicting responsiveness to Tier 2 small-grou … responsiveness indicators, and prereading variables (phonemic awareness, rapid letter naming, oral vocabulary, and IQ). DA was a significant predictor of final level and growth, uniquely explaining 3% to 13% of the variance in Tier 2 responsiveness depending on the competing predictors in the model and WIF outcome (final level of performance or growth). A dual-route cascaded model of reading by deaf adults: evidence for grapheme to viseme conversion.

There is an ongoing debate whether deaf individuals access phonology when reading, and if so, what impact the ability to access phonology might have on reading achievement. However, the debate so far has been theoretically unspecific on two accounts: (a) the phonological units deaf individuals may have of oral language have not been specified and (b) there seem to be no explicit cognitive models specifying how phonology and other factors operate in reading by deaf individuals. We propose that deaf individuals have representations of the sublexical structure of oral-aural language which are bas

Very early phonological and language skills: estimating individual risk of reading disability.

BACKGROUND: Analyses from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Dyslexia project show that the key childhood predictors (phonological awareness, short-term memory, rapid naming, expressive vocabulary, pseudoword repetition, and letter naming) of dyslexia differentiate the group with reading disability (n = 46) and the group without reading problems (n = 152) at the end of the 2nd grade. These measures were employed at the ages of 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 years and information regarding the familial risk of dyslexia was used to find the most sensitive indices of an individual child's risk for reading dis…

Aggregating automatically extracted regulatory pathway relations.

Automatic tools to extract information from biomedical texts are needed to help researchers leverage the vast and increasing body of biomedical literature. While several biomedical relation extraction systems have been created and tested, little work has been done to meaningfully organize the extracted relations. Organizational processes should consolidate multiple references to the same objects over various levels of granularity, connect those references to other resources, and capture contextual information. We propose a feature decomposition approach to relation aggregation to support a fiv

Cognitive bias via the Internet: a comparison of Web-based and standard emotional Stroop tasks in social phobia.

There is accumulating evidence to suggest that social phobia is associated with attentional bias for words related to social threat. Information processing in individuals with social phobia (n = 87) was investigated in the present study using 2 versions of the emotional Stroop task. Results from a standard emotional Stroop task indicated delayed colour naming of socially threatening words relative to neutral words, in line with previous research, whereas results from a Web-based emotional Stroop task indicated a facilitation effect, with faster manual indication of colour choice for socially t

An attempt to simulate letter-by-letter dyslexia in normal readers.

We attempted to simulate the main features of letter-by-letter (LBL) dyslexia in normal readers through stimulus degradation (i.e. contrast reduction and removal of high spatial frequencies). The results showed the word length and the letter confusability effects characteristic of LBL dyslexia. However, the interaction of letter confusability and N size (i.e. a facilitatory effect only for low confusability targets) previously observed in LBL dyslexics [Arguin, M., Fiset, S., & Bub, D. The role of semantic complexity in treatment of naming deficits: training semantic categories in fluent aphasia by controlling exemplar typicality.

The effect of typicality of category exemplars on naming was investigated using a single subject experimental design across participants and behaviors in 4 patients with fluent aphasia. Participants received a semantic feature treatment to improve naming of either typical or atypical items within semantic categories, while generalization was tested to untrained items of the category. The order of typicality and category trained was counterbalanced across participants. Results indicated that patients trained on naming of atypical exemplars demonstrated generalization to naming of intermediate a

Word associations in deep dyslexia.

Deep dyslexia is an acquired reading disorder resulting in the production of semantic errors during oral reading and an inability to read aloud nonwords. Several researchers have postulated that patients with deep dyslexia have both phonological and semantic access impairments but the data supporting these claims are not convincing. In fact, the hallmark feature of deep dyslexia--the semantic errors--strongly implies that these patients can access semantic information from printed words. We test the integrity of the semantic system in two such patients through auditory and visual word associat

A developmental study of specific spelling disability.

Previous studies have identified a group of individuals with specific problems in spelling, and compared them to a group with problems in reading and spelling. Those who are poor at reading and spelling are thought to have more severe underlying language problems. This study compared the cognitive abilities of three groups of children: one specifically spelling disabled, one spelling and reading disabled, and one control group without reading or spelling problems. The groups were identified at age 14. A five-year retrospective analysis of their performance revealed that both of the disabled gr

Deterioration of word meaning: implications for reading.

We investigated six patients with progressive focal dementia or progressive aphasia, who showed impairments in knowledge of word meaning ranging from moderate to very severe. In all cases, a test of oral word reading demonstrated preserved reading of words with regular spelling-to-sound correspondences (e.g. MINT), but impaired reading of words with atypical correspondences (e.g. PINT). The level of success on these "exception" words was significantly related to word frequency, and the most common error was the assignment of a more typical spelling-sound correspondence. Various explanations ar
