The neuropeptide oxytocin plays key roles in social bonding and stress reduction, and thus appears to be a likely mediator of maternal buffering of infant stress responses. In the guinea pig, the presence of the mother in a threatening environment buffers cortisol elevations as well as active (vocalizing) and passive (e.g. crouching) responses typical of isolation in this species; yet, effects of OT in guinea pig pups under any conditions have not been reported. Here, we examined the ability of intracerebroventricular (ICV) OT to moderate plasma cortisol levels and behavior in guinea pig pups

Neuroplasticity in the amygdala, a brain center for emotions, leads to increased neuronal activity and output that can generate emotional-affective behaviors and modulate nocifensive responses. Mechanisms of increased activity in the amygdala output region (central nucleus, CeA) include increased reactive oxygen species, and so we explored beneficial effects of monomethyl fumarate (MMF), which can have neuroprotective effects through the nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (Nrf2) antioxidant response pathway. Systemic (intraperitoneal) MMF dose-dependently inhibited vocalizations and m

Sperm whales have learned to depredate black cod (Anoplopoma fimbria) from longline deployments in the Gulf of Alaska. On May 31, 2006, simultaneous acoustic and visual recordings were made of a depredation attempt by a sperm whale at 108 m depth. Because the whale was oriented perpendicularly to the camera as it contacted the longline at a known distance from the camera, the distance from the nose to the hinge of the jaw could be estimated. Allometric relationships obtained from whaling data and skeleton measurements could then be used to estimate both the spermaceti organ length and total le

Psittacines embody in an ideal fashion the child-like characteristics that humans adore. Animal lovers are unable to resist their expressive eyes, brightly coloured plumage, tameness and mimicry of human speech. The desire of pet-owners to have a tame, speaking bird with a very strong bond to its owner is achieved through hand-rearing, but this results in psychoreactive behavioural abnormalities in these highly social birds due to abnormal fixation. The signs and causes of these behavioural abnormalities, also called cage neuroses, are explained. The complex of feather-plucking, feather-ingest

OBJECTIVE: There is a paucity of information in the literature about how electromyography (EMG) with nerve conduction studies (NCS) can be utilized in the field of neurolaryngology. The goal of this study was two-part: (1) to identify the NCS test parameters that best reflect underlying neurolaryngeal pathophysiology in a porcine model, and (2) to determine if comparable NCS parameters can be used to assess clinical laryngeal denervation injuries in patients.
METHODS: Yukatan minipigs underwent general anesthesia with EMG and recurrent laryngeal NCS assessment. Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN)

The effects of pen relocation at dam-calf separation on behavioral changes and stress were examined in Japanese Black calves. Male and female calves were randomly assigned at 4 months of age to one of two groups: a non-relocation group, in which the dam was moved to a separate pen while the calf remained in its original pen; and a relocation group, in which the calf was moved while the dam remained in place. Calves were observed for step counts per 24 h and vocalizing counts per 12 h and per hour, and for time spent feeding, lying, and ruminating over 12-h periods around weaning. Blood samples

Male and female hamsters differ in the stimulus control of the ultrasounds they produce during courtship and mating. In particular, untreated males show greater increases in ultrasound rate after exposure to stimulus females than after contact with other males. Conversely, estrous females are more responsive to stimulus males than females. This sex difference reflects both organizational and activational effects of gonadal hormones. Thus, responses to early castration or treatment with testosterone propionate (TP), estradiol benzoate (EB), or dihydrotestosterone propionate suggest that the dev

BACKGROUND: A lack of serotonin (also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) in the brain due to deficiency of the rate-limiting enzyme in 5-HT synthesis, tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), was recently reported to result in impaired maternal affiliation across species, including mice, rats, and monkeys. In rodents, this was reflected in a lack of preference for maternal odors and reduced levels of isolation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations (USV), possibly contributing to a severe growth retardation phenotype.
METHODS: Here, we tested whether growth retardation, maternal affiliation deficits, and/

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential environmental endocrine-disrupting compound found in water and a potential threat to aquatic habitats. Cd has been shown to have various short-term effects on aquatic animals; however, evidence for long-term effects of Cd on vocal communications in amphibians is lacking. To better understand the long-term effects of low-dose Cd on acoustic communication in amphibians, male Xenopus laevis individuals were treated with low Cd concentrations (0.1, 1, and 10 μg/L) via aqueous exposure for 24 months. At the end of the exposure, the acoustic spectrum characteristics o

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) transection injuries may occur during thyroidectomy and other surgical procedures. Laser nerve welding has been shown to cause less technique-related axonal damage than the traditional suture method. We compared functional adductor results using these two methods of RLN repair.
STUDY DESIGN: Animal model.
METHODS: Canine hemilarynges underwent pretreatment testing of laryngeal adductor function, followed by RLN transection and repair using potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser welding (n = 8) or microneural suture (n = 16) techniques.

Immune dysregulation has been noted consistently in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families, including the presence of autoantibodies reactive to fetal brain proteins in nearly a quarter of mothers of children with ASD versus <1% in mothers of typically developing children. Our lab recently identified the peptide epitope sequences on seven antigenic proteins targeted by these maternal autoantibodies. Through immunization with these peptide epitopes, we have successfully created an endogenous, antigen-driven mouse model that ensures a constant exposure to the salient

PURPOSE: A subgroup of individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) displays social difficulties; however, it is not clear if individuals with comorbid autism spectrum disorders account for these difficulties.
METHODS: We compared social function using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule in 43 young females with first-episode AN who did not have comorbid autism spectrum disorder, 28 individuals recovered from adolescent-onset AN, and 41 healthy comparison individuals (age range 14-22 years). We measured adaptive behavior with the Vineland-II parent questionnaire, and aspects of social cognit

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common childhood-onset disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics that are typically accompanied by a multitude of comorbid symptoms. Pharmacological treatment options are limited, which has led to the exploration of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a possible treatment for severe cases. Multiple lines of evidence have linked TS with abnormalities in the motor and limbic cortico-basal ganglia (CBG) pathways. Neurophysiological data have only recently started to slowly accumulate from multiple sources: noninvasive imaging and electrophysiological techniques, invas

Some beaked whale species are susceptible to the detrimental effects of anthropogenic noise. Most studies have concentrated on the effects of military sonar, but other forms of acoustic disturbance (e.g. shipping noise) may disrupt behavior. An experiment involving the exposure of target whale groups to intense vessel-generated noise tested how these exposures influenced the foraging behavior of Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) in the Tongue of the Ocean (Bahamas). A military array of bottom-mounted hydrophones was used to measure the response based upon changes in the spat

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: The recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) commonly regenerates after injury; however, functional motion is rarely recovered. Animal experiments have documented aberrant reinnervation after nerve transection, with motor axons reaching inappropriate muscles. More recently, experimental results suggest that lack of vocal fold motion after RLN injury is due to preferential reinnervation of adductor muscles, with inadequate reinnervation of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA), the only abductor muscle of the larynx. Information on factors that could influence the receptiveness

OBJECTIVES: We describe a method for eliciting phonation in an in vivo rabbit preparation using low-frequency, bipolar pulsed stimulation of the cricothyroid muscles with airflow delivered to the glottis.
METHODS: Ten New Zealand White breeder rabbits weighing 3 to 5 kg were used in this study. The cricothyroid muscles were isolated bilaterally, and separate pairs of anode-cathode hooked-wire electrodes were inserted into each muscle. A Grass S-88 stimulator and 2 constant-current PSIU6 isolation units were used to deliver bipolar square wave pulses to each cricothyroid muscle, with airflow d

Density estimation from passive acoustic monitoring requires knowledge of the sound production rates and signal characteristics of animal calls. This study explores the impact of the sound radiation pattern of echolocation clicks on density estimation for two deep-diving species, sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and dense-beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris). The likelihood of receiving a click from within the narrow half-power biosonar beam at a randomly positioned receiver is small, and the study demonstrates that the majority of clicks are likely to be detected from outside this mai
