A review of antibiotic resistance among Campylobacter species in human, animal, and water sources in South Africa: a One Health Approach.

Campylobacter species are among the aetiological agents responsible for 400-500 million human diarrhoea cases per annum. The risk of dissemination of antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter species between humans, animals, and the environment is anticipated, given its transmissibility through these sources. The objective of this paper is to present a situation analysis that reports the current patterns and determinants of Campylobacter antibiotic resistance in South Africa. This review applies the One Health (OH) Approach to systematically review and collate the current antibiotic resistance status

Visualization of Type-J counter current chromatography: Hydrodynamic behavior in a helical column.

In counter-current chromatography (CCC), the hydrodynamic motion of a two-phase solvent system in the column/coil is very important. There are some previous visualization studies on CCC using stroboscopic photography. As CCC separation is a continuous liquid-liquid extraction process, observing the distribution and movement of the solvent system on-line will be helpful to understand the hydrodynamic behavior during the whole CCC separation process. In the present study, a high-speed imaging camera was employed to take videos of a running CCC bobbin (visualized continuously on-line). The dynami

Human endothelium: target for aldosterone.

Aldosterone has long been known to control water and electrolyte balance by acting on mineralocorticoid receptors in kidney. However, recent studies demonstrated the presence of these receptors in nonclassical locations, including the cardiovascular system. We tested the hypothesis whether endothelial cells respond to aldosterone with changes in cell volume, a measure for ion-mediated water movement across the cell membrane. By means of atomic force microscopy in fluid, we measured volume of adherent human umbilical venous endothelial cells exposed for 72 hours to 10 nmol/L aldosterone. Over t

Human myeloperoxidase: structure of a cyanide complex and its interaction with bromide and thiocyanate substrates at 1.9 A resolution.

The 1.9 A X-ray crystal structure of human myeloperoxidase complexed with cyanide (R = 0.175, R(free) = 0.215) indicates that cyanide binds to the heme iron with a bent Fe-C-N angle of approximately 157 degrees, and binding is accompanied by movement of the iron atom by 0.2 A into the porphyrin plane. The bent orientation of the cyanide allows the formation of three hydrogen bonds between its nitrogen atom and the distal histidine as well as two water molecules in the distal cavity. The 1.85 A X-ray crystal structure of an inhibitory complex with thiocyanate (R = 0.178, R(free) = 0.210) indica

Judging complex movement performances for excellence: a principal components analysis-based technique applied to competitive diving.

Athletes rely on subjective assessment of complex movements from coaches and judges to improve their motor skills. In some sports, such as diving, snowboard half pipe, gymnastics, and figure skating, subjective scoring forms the basis for competition. It is currently unclear whether this scoring process can be mathematically modeled; doing so could provide insight into what motor skill is. Principal components analysis has been proposed as a motion analysis method for identifying fundamental units of coordination. We used PCA to analyze movement quality of dives taken from USA Diving's 2009 Wo

Motor imagery in Parkinson's disease: a PET study.

We used positron emission tomography (PET) with 15O-labelled water to record patterns of cerebral activation in six patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), studied when clinically "off" and after turning "on" as a result of dopaminergic stimulation. They were asked to imagine a finger opposition movement performed with their right hand, externally paced at a rate of 1 Hz. Trials alternating between motor imagery and rest were measured. A pilot study of three age-matched controls was also performed. We chose the task as a robust method of activating the supplementary motor area (SMA), defects o

The Effects of Dynamic Stability Training with Inertial Load of Water on Dynamic Balance and Pain in Middle-Aged Women with Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder among middle-aged women, often leading to impaired dynamic balance and increased fear of movement. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dynamic stability training using the inertial load of water on balance ability and pain in middle-aged women with CLBP. Methods: Twenty-nine participants aged 40-65 years with CLBP were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. The experimental group wore a water-filled aquavest, and the control group wore a weighted vest. Both groups performed 12 weeks of dyna

Clients' Perception of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Services received before and during the COVID-19 Outbreak in Nigeria's Epicenter.

BACKGROUND: Since the emergence of COVID-19, countries have implemented measures to limit spread, which include movement restrictions. These measures led to poor or inadequate delivery of many health services, including maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) services. This study assessed clients' perception of routine MNCH services received from government health care facilities before and during the COVID-19 outbreak in Lagos, Nigeria's epicenter. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted among 1241 women of reproductive age selected by multistage sampling who had j

Calcium sulfate dihydrate urolithiasis in a pet rabbit.

CASE DESCRIPTION A 3-year-old sexually intact male rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was evaluated because of a 1-day history of signs of anorexia and depression. CLINICAL FINDINGS Clinical examination revealed signs of depression, hunched posture, low skin elasticity (suggesting dehydration), slightly distended abdomen, and penile and preputial edema. The owner reported that the rabbit had been fed a routine diet, received water via a sipper bottle, and was allowed free movement around the home. It had been observed by the owner to bite and chew gypsum-based plaster from the walls of the home. A

Functional assessment of SLC4A11, an integral membrane protein mutated in corneal dystrophies.

SLC4A11, a member of the SLC4 family of bicarbonate transporters, is a widely expressed integral membrane protein, abundant in kidney and cornea. Mutations of SLC4A11 cause some cases of the blinding corneal dystrophies, congenital hereditary endothelial dystrophy, and Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy. These diseases are marked by fluid accumulation in the corneal stroma, secondary to defective fluid reabsorption by the corneal endothelium. The role of SLC4A11 in these corneal dystrophies is not firmly established, as SLC4A11 function remains unclear. To clarify the normal function(s) of SL

Cerebral correlates of hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia, defined as a serum sodium concentration ([Na+]) less than 135 mEq/L, is commonly caused by elevated levels of the hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP), which causes water retention. The principal organ affected by disease-related morbidity is the brain. The neurologic complications associated with hyponatremia are attributable to cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure, caused by the osmotically driven movement of water from the extracellular compartment into brain cells. Although neurologic symptoms induced by hyponatremia are limited by an adaptive brain mechanism know

Distinct role of AtCuAOβ- and RBOHD-driven H2O2 production in wound-induced local and systemic leaf-to-leaf and root-to-leaf stomatal closure.

Polyamines (PAs) are ubiquitous low-molecular-weight aliphatic compounds present in all living organisms and essential for cell growth and differentiation. The developmentally regulated and stress-induced copper amine oxidases (CuAOs) oxidize PAs to aminoaldehydes producing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ammonia. The Arabidopsis thaliana CuAOβ (AtCuAOβ) was previously reported to be involved in stomatal closure and early root protoxylem differentiation induced by the wound-signal MeJA via apoplastic H2O2 production, suggesting a role of this enzyme in water balance, by modulating xylem-dependent

Quantifying the impact of climate extremes on salt mobilization and loading in non-developed, high-desert landscapes using SWAT.

Excess salt loading from watershed landscapes into river systems acts as a chemical stressor in water bodies and can have significant impacts on downstream water quality. High salinity threatens sustainable crop production globally and is especially prevalent in semi-arid and arid regions. However, relatively little research has been conducted to evaluate salt movement and loadings in natural, high-desert catchments in the face of climate change and extreme climate events. In this study, we use the watershed model SWAT and a newly developed salinity module to simulate the mass transport of 8 m

Progesterone, estradiol, arachidonic acid, oxytocin, forskolin and cAMP influence on aquaporin 1 and 5 expression in porcine uterine explants during the mid-luteal phase of the estrous cycle and luteolysis: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: The cell membrane water channel protein, aquaporins (AQPs), regulate cellular water transport and cell volume and play a key role in water homeostasis. Recently, AQPs are considered as important players in the field of reproduction. In previous studies, we have established the presence of AQP1 and 5 in porcine uterus. Their expression at protein level altered in distinct tissues of the female reproductive system depending on the phase of the estrous cycle. However, the regulation of aquaporin genes and proteins expression has not been examined in porcine uterine tissue. Therefore,

Proabsorptive action of gum arabic: regulation of nitric oxide metabolism in the basolateral potassium channel of the small intestine.

BACKGROUND: Gum arabic, a high-molecular-weight natural polysaccharide, has been shown to have proabsorptive properties in animal models of gastrointestinal disease that involve nitric oxide (NO). Gum arabic may indirectly regulate NO metabolism by creating an outward NO gradient, thus altering other intracellular NO-dependent mechanisms such as gating of the potassium (K+) channel. This hypothesis was further investigated using the K+ channel blocker, glybenclamide. METHODS: Following intraperitoneal injection of 4.5 mg/kg glybenclamide or saline, the jejunum of anesthetized rats was perfuse

Lumpy skin disease threat in Europe: Current situation, transmission dynamics and future prospects.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD), caused by Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV, genus Capripoxvirus), is an emerging transboundary disease of cattle and water buffalo. Although rarely fatal, it results in severe economic losses due to decreased productivity, hide damage, infertility, and trade limitations. This review summarizes the etiology, susceptible hosts, modes of transmission, and advances in control, vaccination, and treatment strategies, with a particular focus on Europe, where spread into previously unaffected areas has recently been reported. Since its first identification in Zambia in 1929, LS

Intramuscular Injection of BOTOX® Boosts Learning and Memory in Adult Mice in Association with Enriched Circulation of Platelets and Enhanced Density of Pyramidal Neurons in the Hippocampus.

BOTOX® is a therapeutic form of botulinum neurotoxin. It acts by blocking the release of acetylcholine (ACh) from the synaptic vesicles at the neuromuscular junctions, thereby inhibiting the muscle contraction. Notably, many neurological diseases have been characterized by movement disorders in association with abnormal levels of ACh. Thus, blockade of aberrant release of ACh appears to be a potential therapeutic strategy to mitigate many neurological deficits. BOTOX® has widely been used to manage a number of clinical complications like neuromuscular disorders, migraine and neuropathic pain.
