Renovascular hypertension is a potentially curable form of high blood pressure that is thought to be extremely rare among blacks. We demonstrate, however, that in a clinically selected population, the prevalence of renovascular hypertension is similar in blacks and whites. Fifty-one black and 31 white patients with histologically proven sarcoidosis were managed in the respiratory units of the Johannesburg and Hillbrow Hospitals between January 1965 and October 1987. A number of differences in the demographic, clinical and laboratory features of the disease were documented in the two groups. An increased echogenicity of the pancreas ("white pancreas") was sonographically found in 25 children with various pancreatic and systemic diseases. Fifteen patients with cystic fibrosis had a small white pancreas. Five patients with haemosiderosis, two with pancreatitis and one with Shwachman-syndrome presented with a normal-sized or slightly enlarged pancreas. Fatty infiltration and calcifications of the pancreas can also increase its echogenicity.

Four hundred eighty-nine patients were surveyed during the summer months to evaluate their sun-exposure habits and beliefs, and their use of sunscreens. Seventy-one percent had one or more hours of sun exposure on at least one day per week. Men had more sun exposure than women. Subjects 30 years old and younger spent more time in the sun than those older than 30 years. A model of relative deprivation is proposed drawing on the writings of Gurr (1970) and Runciman (1966) and is discussed in relation to existing studies. According to recent works, hereditary elliptocytosis (HE) appears to be related in some instances, to a defective self-association of spectrin (type I HE). We report a new case of type I HE observed in a white patient. Study of limited tryptic digestion of a spectrin dimer showed modification of a peptide involved in the dimer self-association process.

Three cases of hepatic amebiasis and one case of gastric amebiasis were diagnosed in black and white colobus monkeys during a 9-month period. The diagnosis was difficult because of the absence of trophozoites and cysts in the feces and because of few trophozoites found in many of the hepatic lesions. Indirect hemagglutination titers were diagnostic in 2 monkeys.

An 8 to 10-week-old female New Zealand white rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus, which exhibited clinical signs of anorexia, depression, and torticollis was found to have lymphosarcoma with lymphoblastic leukemia. The multiple visceral involvement with neoplastic lymphoid cells observed in this animal was similar to previously reprted cases of lymphosarcoma in the rabbit. An unusual finding was the occurrence of lymphoblastic leukemia since lymphosarcoma in the rabbit has previously been reported as aleukemic.

In 8 cases of Addison's disease due to adrenal tuberculosis, the substitutive treatment appeared unnecessary since more than one year. Urinary 17-OHCS were in the normal range but did not rise after ACTH injection except in two cases. In all the cases, plasma ACTH was elevated but lower than in severe adrenal insufficiency, and in the range of those observed in congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Lipoxygenase activity in three cultivars (purple, green, and white) of eggplant, Solanum melongena, were compared. Activity was greatest in the purple and lowest in the white variety. In contrast to reports that NaCN did not inhibit eggplant lipoxygenase, in these studies cyanide completely inhibited the enzyme in all three varieties.
