Deep brain stimulation and sensorimotor gating in tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Recent translational data suggest that deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) loops improves sensorimotor gating in psychiatric disorders that show deficient prepulse inhibition (PPI), a robust operational measure of sensorimotor gating. To our knowledge we are the first to investigate this effect in patients with Tourette syndrome (TS). We measured PPI of the acoustic startle reflex in patients with TS (N = 10) or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) (N = 8) treated with DBS of the centromedian and ventro-oral internal thalamic nucleus and the anterior limb

A randomized controlled trial to test efficacy of digital enhancements of storybooks in support of narrative comprehension and word learning.

Experiments with film-like story presentations have been found to be beneficial in supporting children's story comprehension and word learning. The main goal of the current study was to disentangle the effects of visual and auditory enhancements in digital books. Participants were 99 typically developing children (41 boys and 58 girls) aged 4-6 years from two public kindergartens in Bursa, Turkey. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with a control group and four experimental conditions that included all possible combinations: static illustrations with and without music/sounds and anima

Comparison between adaptive and adjustment procedures for binaural loudness balancing.

Binaural loudness balancing is performed in research and clinical practice when fitting bilateral hearing devices, and is particularly important for bimodal listeners, who have a bilateral combination of a hearing aid and a cochlear implant. In this study, two psychophysical binaural loudness balancing procedures were compared. Two experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, the effect of procedure (adaptive or adjustment) on the balanced loudness levels was investigated using noise band stimuli, of which some had a frequency shift to simulate bimodal hearing. In the second experime

Auditory and visual naming tests for children.

Assessment of naming in children has been hampered by the use of tests that were developed, either to assess naming in adults or to assess related verbal functions in children. We developed comparable visual naming test (VNT) and auditory description naming (ANT) specifically for children. We collected normative data, not only for accuracy, typically the sole performance measure, but also for response time (RT) and reliance on phonemic cuing. The normative sample consisted of 200 typically developing children, ages 6-15, with 40 children per 2-year age group (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, and 14-15)

Using sound to unmask losses disguised as wins in multiline slot machines.

Losses disguised as wins (LDWs) are slot machine outcomes where participants bet on multiple lines and win back less than their wager. Despite losing money, the machine celebrates these outcomes with reinforcing sights and sounds. Here, we sought to show that psychophysically and psychologically, participants treat LDWs as wins, but that we could expose LDWs as losses by using negative sounds as feedback. 157 participants were allocated into one of three conditions: a standard sound condition where LDWs, despite being losses, are paired with winning sights and sounds; a silent condition, where

The effects of listener training on discriminative control by elements of compound stimuli in children with disabilities.

The purpose of the current study was to assess whether the establishment of listener relations with compound stimuli as samples and comparisons would lead to the emergence of: (1) speaker behavior in the form of tacts of the compound stimuli; (2) listener and tact responses for untaught compounds; and (3) listener and tact responses for the isolated properties of compounds. Participants were four boys diagnosed with autism and one diagnosed with intellectual disability. We taught participants to select among three compound comparisons consisting of combinations of shapes and patterns in the pr

Balls to the wall: how acoustic information from a ball in motion guides interceptive movement in people with Parkinson's disease.

Previous research has shown that Parkinson's disease (PD) patients can increase the speed of their movement when catching a moving ball compared to when reaching for a static ball (Majsak et al., 1998). A recent model proposed by Redgrave et al. (2010) explains this phenomenon with regard to the dichotomic organization of motor loops in the basal ganglia circuitry and the role of sensory micro-circuitries in the control of goal-directed actions. According to this model, external visual information that is relevant to the required movement can induce a switch from a habitual control of movement

Suppression of putative tinnitus-related activity by extra-cochlear electrical stimulation.

Studies on animals have shown that noise-induced hearing loss is followed by an increase of spontaneous firing at several stages of the central auditory system. This central hyperactivity has been suggested to underpin the perception of tinnitus. It was shown that decreasing cochlear activity can abolish the noise-induced central hyperactivity. This latter result further suggests that an approach consisting of reducing cochlear activity may provide a therapeutic avenue for tinnitus. In this context, extra-cochlear electric stimulation (ECES) may be a good candidate to modulate cochlear activit

Auditory cortex tACS and tRNS for tinnitus: single versus multiple sessions.

Tinnitus is the perception of a sound in the absence of an external acoustic source, which often exerts a significant impact on the quality of life. Currently there is evidence that neuroplastic changes in both neural pathways are involved in the generation and maintaining of tinnitus. Neuromodulation has been suggested to interfere with these neuroplastic alterations. In this study we aimed to compare the effect of two upcoming forms of transcranial electrical neuromodulation: alternating current stimulation (tACS) and random noise stimulation (tRNS), both applied on the auditory cortex. A da

Audiovisual speech perception and eye gaze behavior of adults with asperger syndrome.

Audiovisual speech perception was studied in adults with Asperger syndrome (AS), by utilizing the McGurk effect, in which conflicting visual articulation alters the perception of heard speech. The AS group perceived the audiovisual stimuli differently from age, sex and IQ matched controls. When a voice saying /p/ was presented with a face articulating /k/, the controls predominantly heard /k/. Instead, the AS group heard /k/ and /t/ with almost equal frequency, but with large differences between individuals. There were no differences in gaze direction or unisensory perception between the AS an

Immediate and subsequent effects of matched and unmatched stimuli on targeted vocal stereotypy and untargeted motor stereotypy.

The authors evaluated the effects of matched and unmatched stimuli on immediate and subsequent engagement in targeted vocal stereotypy (Experiment 1) and untargeted motor stereotypy (Experiment 2). Results of Experiment 1 showed that (a) matched stimulation decreased immediate engagement in vocal stereotypy for 8 of 11 participants and increased subsequent engagement in vocal stereotypy for only 1 of the 8 participants and (b) unmatched stimulation decreased immediate engagement in vocal stereotypy for only 1 of 10 participants and did not increase subsequent engagement in vocal stereotypy for

Stimulus modality and working memory performance in Greek children with reading disabilities: additional evidence for the pictorial superiority hypothesis.

This study investigated the effects of stimulus presentation modality on working memory performance in children with reading disabilities (RD) and in typically developing children (TDC), all native speakers of Greek. It was hypothesized that the visual presentation of common objects would result in improved learning and recall performance as compared to the auditory presentation of stimuli. Twenty children, ages 10-12, diagnosed with RD were matched to 20 TDC age peers. The experimental tasks implemented a multitrial verbal learning paradigm incorporating three modalities: auditory, visual, an

Facilitation of the spinal H-reflex by auditory stimulation in dyslexic adults.

Dyslexic subjects show a variety of mild sensory and motor deficits that have been assumed to reflect dysfunction of the large-diameter 'magnocells' in different parts of the brain. Hearing as a warning sense relies on rapidly-conducting fibers, and on the basis of the magnocellular deficit theory, we wondered whether auditory alerting would be weakened in dyslexic adults. We quantified the strength of sound-induced spinal facilitation in seven dyslexic and eight normal-reading adults by measuring the amplitudes of H-reflex, a monosynaptic spinal reflex, after loud binaural sounds. The audiosp

Functional echoplanar brain imaging correlates of amphetamine administration to normal subjects and subjects with the narcoleptic syndrome.

Two subjects with narcoleptic syndrome and three healthy volunteers underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during the simultaneous presentation of periodic auditory and visual stimuli both before and after administration of amphetamine. The effect of amphetamine in control subjects was a small reduction in the extent of sensory-induced activation. In the narcoleptic subjects, amphetamine led to an increase in the extent of induced activation within primary and association sensory cortex.

Mechanisms of salicylate ototoxicity.

The ototoxic effects of salicylates, reversible hearing loss and tinnitus, are well documented. However, the pharmacological mechanisms underlying these changes in cochlear function are not well understood. The studies reported here were an investigation of the site and mechanism of salicylate ototoxicity through an examination of its effects on ionic, neural and mechanical aspects of cochlear transduction. Salicylate administration produced an intensity dependent reduction of the AP and SP, with the predominant effects occurring at low stimulus levels. In direct contrast, a significant increa

Noninvasive Ultrasonic Neuromodulation in Freely Moving Mice.

Neuromodulation is a fundamental method for obtaining basic information about neuronal circuits for use in treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders. Ultrasound stimulation has become a promising approach for noninvasively inducing neuromodulation in animals and humans. However, the previous investigations were subject to substantial limitations, due to most of them involving anesthetized and fixed small-animal models. Studies of awake and freely moving animals are needed, but the currently used ultrasound devices are too bulky to be applied to a freely moving animal. This study is

Development of a battery-free ultrasonically powered functional electrical stimulator for movement restoration after paralyzing spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is used to restore movements in paretic limbs after severe paralyses resulting from neurological injuries such as spinal cord injury (SCI). Most chronic FES systems utilize an implantable electrical stimulator to deliver a small electric current to the targeted muscle or nerve to stimulate muscle contractions. These implanted stimulators are generally bulky, mainly due to the size of the batteries. Furthermore, these battery-powered stimulators are required to be explanted every few years for battery replacement which may result in surgical f

[Management of subjective tinnitus].

MANAGEMENT OF SUBJECTIVE TINNITUS. Subjective tinnitus, which is the perception of a sound in the absence of any actual external or internal acoustic stimulation, is a common symptom affecting about 15% of the population. It should be distinguished from objective tinnitus, which is the perception of a sound produced inside the human body (vascular pulsation or muscular contraction). In this article, we will only focus on the therapeutic management of subjective tinnitus, which is the most frequent case. Tinnitus may be a severe symptom that strongly impairs the patient's quality of life. Etiol…

Long-term sound conditioning increases distortion product otoacoustic emission amplitudes and decreases olivocochlear efferent reflex strength.

The cochlea can be protected from acoustic trauma by moderate-level sound exposure. It is suggested that olivocochlear system may play a significant role in this protection. This study was performed to investigate distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) amplitudes changes and the efficiency of contralateral noise stimulation on DPOAE after conditioning noise exposure. Our results demonstrate that long-term conditioning can increase the DPOAE amplitudes at low frequencies (1.0-3.0 kHz) and decrease the olivocochlear efferent reflex strength at the same frequencies. The DPOAE amplitudes

Long-term intracochlear implantation in man.

Whether long-term intracochlear implantation and direct electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve will induce intracochlear bone growth or cause further degeneration of a severely compromised auditory system is an important clinical consideration. Thin-section CT evaluations of the cochleas of six subjects who have used their cochlear implant devices on a daily basis for 3 or more years demonstrated no evidence of osteoneogenesis of the cochlea in the vicinity of the active electrode. No corrosion of the electrode or insulation material was noted on electron microscopy of an explanted elect
