Mammary intraepithelial lymphocytes promote lactogenesis and offspring fitness.

Breastfeeding is an obligatory requirement of mammalian survival. This fundamental process is associated with the adaptation of maternal physiology, including the transformation of the mammary gland into a milk-secreting organ. How maternal immunity contributes to mammary gland remodeling and function remains largely unknown. Here, we show that maternal adaptive immunity plays a critical role in shaping lactogenesis. Specifically, physiological adaptation during pregnancy is associated with thymic involution and a paradoxical enrichment in intraepithelial lymphocyte (IEL) precursors that no lo

DATA in BRIEF of: Adaptative mechanisms indicated by placental protein expression changes in high-altitude Tibetan women during vaginal delivery.

Over a period of 30,000 to 40,000 years, high-altitude Tibetans have physiologically and genetically adapted to conditions such as hypoxia, low temperature, and high-intensity ultraviolet radiation. Based on the unique physiological and morphological characteristics of the Tibetan people, they have outstanding hypoxia adaptation skills and can continue to thrive in plateau hypoxia. The placenta of high-altitude Tibetans is protected from oxidative stress during delivery; however, little is known about changes in placental protein expression during vaginal delivery. In this study, we aimed to r

TRP channels in oxygen physiology: distinctive functional properties and roles of TRPA1 in O2 sensing.

Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) proteins form cation channels characterized by a wide variety of activation triggers. Here, we overview a group of TRP channels that respond to reactive redox species to transduce physiological signals, with a focus on TRPA1 and its role in oxygen physiology. Our systematic evaluation of oxidation sensitivity using cysteine-selective reactive disulphides with different redox potentials reveals that TRPA1 has the highest sensitivity to oxidants/electrophiles among the TRP channels, which enables it to sense O2. Proline hydroxylation by O2-dependent hydroxylase

Comparative analysis of body composition and pulmonary function in elite male deaf endurance athletes - track and field and road cycling.

The physiological determinants of respiratory function in elite athletes with hearing impairment remain unexplored. It is unknown whether sport-specific adaptations or the unique neurophysiology of deafness primarily govern their pulmonary performance, and if standard spirometric criteria are applicable. This study aimed to conduct the first comprehensive multivariate characterization of anthropometric and training-related predictors of pulmonary function in elite deaf athletes, comparing disciplines with contrasting physiological demands. Thirty-three elite male deaf athletes (track-and-field

No altitude required: differential ventilatory and blood acid-base homeostasis between unacclimatized lowlanders and Tibetan highlanders at 1,400 m.

Tibetan highlanders (TH) possess physiological adaptations supporting ventilation, oxygenation, and acid-base regulation with acclimatization to chronic hypobaric hypoxia. Although well-characterized at high altitude, it is unclear whether these traits are evident at low altitude, independent of environmental hypoxic stimuli. To evaluate baseline physiological differences, we compared variables related to ventilatory, blood oxygen, and acid-base balance between unacclimatized ancestral lowlanders (LL; n = 29) and TH (n = 31) residing at 1,400 m, a subthreshold altitude not expected to elicit v

Cis-regulatory evolution shapes dehydration response in a desert-adapted house mouse.

Deserts are among the most extreme environments on Earth. High temperatures and a lack of water impose powerful selective pressures on desert species, offering an opportunity to investigate the genetic basis of local adaptation. Despite the unique challenges of desert living, house mice (Mus musculus domesticus), a species native to Western Europe, have recently colonized the Sonoran Desert in North America within the last 400-600 generations. House mice from the Sonoran Desert show phenotypic differences consistent with adaptation to water scarcity, including maintaining weight better under w

Mechanisms of energy metabolism reprogramming and homeostasis maintenance in overwintering hibernating animals.

Hibernation is a specialized adaptive energy-saving survival strategy evolved by animals to withstand winter cold stress and food scarcity. Its core feature lies in profound metabolic suppression, characterized by a drastic reduction in metabolic rate during hibernation, accompanied by the coordinated downregulation of multiple physiological functions such as body temperature, heart rate, and respiratory rate. The establishment and maintenance of this deep metabolic suppression state essentially rely on the systemic reprogramming of energy metabolism, which serves as the core driving force of

Transcriptomics of cryophilic Saccharomyces kudriavzevii reveals the key role of gene translation efficiency in cold stress adaptations.

BACKGROUND: Comparative transcriptomics and functional studies of different Saccharomyces species have opened up the possibility of studying and understanding new yeast abilities. This is the case of yeast adaptation to stress, in particular the cold stress response, which is especially relevant for the food industry. Since the species Saccharomyces kudriavzevii is adapted to grow at low temperatures, it has been suggested that it contains physiological adaptations that allow it to rapidly and efficiently acclimatise after cold shock. RESULTS: In this work, we aimed to provide new insights in

Ambulatory physiological state dynamics predict proximal behavioral markers of affect regulation in everyday life.

Human physiology reflects the body's capacity for self-regulation that is crucial for flexible adaptation to changing environmental demands. Leveraging wearable sensors and machine learning, we aimed to uncover latent physiological states from ambulatory recordings of cardiac, respiratory, and activity signals that correspond with self-reported momentary affective processes, with implications for informing just-in-time adaptive interventions. Fifty-one participants with remitted major depressive disorder and 42 healthy controls completed 7-day ecological momentary assessments of affect, affect

Phenological physiology: seasonal patterns of plant stress tolerance in a changing climate.

The physiological challenges posed by climate change for seasonal, perennial plants include increased risk of heat waves, postbudbreak freezing ('false springs'), and droughts. Although considerable physiological work has shown that the traits conferring tolerance to these stressors - thermotolerance, cold hardiness, and water deficit stress, respectively - are not static in time, they are frequently treated as such. In this review, I synthesize the recent literature on predictable seasonal - and therefore, phenological - patterns of acclimation and deacclimation to heat, cold, and water-defic

Fragility of epidermis in newborns, children and adolescents.

Within their first days of life, newborns' skin undergoes various adaptation processes needed to accommodate the transition from the wet uterine environment to the dry atmosphere. The skin of newborns and infants is considered as a physiological fragile skin, a skin with lower resistance to aggressions. Fragile skin is divided into four categories up to its origin: physiological fragile skin (age, location), pathological fragile skin (acute and chronic), circumstantial fragile skin (due to environmental extrinsic factors or intrinsic factors such as stress) and iatrogenic fragile skin. Integrated Physiological, Transcriptomic, and Metabolomic Analyses Reveal the Mechanism Underlying the Response of Alfalfa to Combined Salt and Heat Stress.

Salt and heat stresses often occur simultaneously in arid regions, restricting the distribution and productivity of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). However, the mechanisms underlying alfalfa responses to combined salt and heat stress remain unclear. Here, we integrated phenotypic, physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses to investigate the regulatory mechanisms involved in combined stress responses. Combined stress more strongly inhibited plant height, stem diameter, fresh weight, net photosynthetic rate, and transpiration rate than single stresses. Salt stress had a predominant e

Hypoxia-adenosine axis as therapeutic targets for acute respiratory distress syndrome.

The human respiratory and circulatory systems collaborate intricately to ensure oxygen delivery to all cells, which is vital for ATP production and maintaining physiological functions and structures. During limited oxygen availability, hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are stabilized and play a fundamental role in maintaining cellular processes for hypoxia adaptation. First discovered during investigations of erythropoietin production regulation, HIFs influence physiological and pathological processes, including development, inflammation, wound healing, and cancer. HIFs promote extracellular ad

Pathophysiology of the right ventricle and of the pulmonary circulation in pulmonary hypertension: an update.

The function of the right ventricle determines the fate of patients with pulmonary hypertension. Since right heart failure is the consequence of increased afterload, a full physiological description of the cardiopulmonary unit consisting of both the right ventricle and pulmonary vascular system is required to interpret clinical data correctly. Here, we provide such a description of the unit and its components, including the functional interactions between the right ventricle and its load. This physiological description is used to provide a framework for the interpretation of right heart cathet

SIRT1 Exon 2-Encoded IDR Gates CREB-Dependent Transcriptional Timing During Fasting.

Metabolic adaptation to fasting requires precise temporal control of gene expression. Although transcription factors and upstream co-regulators that mediate the fasting response are well studied, the role of intrinsically disordered regions in coordinating transcriptional timing remains unclear. Here, we identify the exon 2-encoded intrinsically disordered region of SIRT1 as a regulator of fasting-responsive transcription in the liver. Using a physiological SIRT1ΔE2 mouse model, we show that loss of this region alters the sequence and magnitude of starvation-induced transcriptional responses,

High-quality genome and transcriptome analyses under temperature stress reveal heat shock protein-centric adaptive enhancement mechanisms in Taiwanese loach.

Within the family Cobitidae, the Paramisgurnus dabryanus demonstrates notable environmental resilience and accelerated growth. This is particularly true for the subspecies Taiwanese loach (P. dabryanus ssp. Taiwan). This study presents a chromosome-level genome for the Taiwanese loach, offering a valuable genomic resource for Cobitoidei. We also identified expansions in gene families associated with environmental adaptation, such as heat shock proteins (HSPs), in Taiwanese loaches. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that HSPs may exert a central regulatory role under temperature stress. Correspo

Selenium-modulated changes in growth and nutritional quality of Auricularia auricula mycelia: physiological responses and multi-omics mechanisms.

This study used an integrated multi-omics strategy to elucidate how selenium enhances physiological adaptation and nutritional quality in Auricularia auricula mycelia. Optimal selenium (40 mg/L) promoted growth, elevated extracellular enzyme activities (laccase, xylanase, cellulase), and increased antioxidant capacity, crude melanin, and unsaturated fatty acids. Transcriptomics identified key genes (abcB, fer1, RDH13, SPBC30D10.05c, hsp60) associated with ABC transport, antioxidant defense, and fatty acid metabolism. Metabolomics revealed core metabolites (tryptophan, DKMTP (1,2-dihydroxy-3-ke

Clinically relevant mutations in regulatory regions of metabolic genes facilitate early adaptation to ciprofloxacin in Escherichia coli.

The genomic landscape associated with early adaptation to ciprofloxacin is poorly understood. Although the interplay between core metabolism and antimicrobial resistance is being increasingly recognized, mutations in metabolic genes and their biological role remain elusive. Here, we exposed Escherichia coli to increasing gradients of ciprofloxacin with intermittent transfer-bottlenecking and identified mutations in three non-canonical targets linked to metabolism including a deletion (tRNA-ArgΔ414-bp) and point mutations in the regulatory regions of argI (ARG box) and narU. Our findings sugges

Recent updates on cold adaptation in population and laboratory studies, including cross-adaptation with nonthermal factors.

This review aims to update our understanding of human cold adaptation. First, an overview of the thermoregulatory response to cold is provided, with some recent updates in human brown adipose tissue (BAT). Variation in BAT activity and multiorgan contributions to cold-induced thermogenesis were introduced. We found that individuals with less BAT activity rely more on shivering to compensate for less non-shivering thermogenesis (NST). The mechanisms of cold-induced vasoconstriction are summarized, including the role of arteriovenous anastomoses, adrenergic neural function, and inhibition of the

When Deviation Is Necessary: Balancing Intervention Fidelity and Contextual Adaptation in Haemodialysis Physiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-based physiotherapy is recommended as a core component of haemodialysis care; however, its implementation in routine clinical practice remains inconsistent. While intervention fidelity is considered essential for ensuring evidence-based practice, little is known about how physiotherapists adapt rehabilitation protocols in response to the complexities of real-world clinical environments. OBJECTIVE: To explore how physiotherapists balance intervention fidelity with contextual adaptation during haemodialysis rehabilitation and to examine the cognitive, social, and contextual
