Parental Warmth and Emotion Reactivity in the Brain: Differences by Assigned Sex.

Emotional reactivity and emotion regulation play key roles in adolescent mental health. Positive parenting behavior has been shown to facilitate positive adolescent emotional development; however, relationships between parenting and adolescent neural emotion reactivity have not been thoroughly examined. The present study employed whole-brain analysis of fMRI data to examine associations between observed parental warmth (one type of positive parenting) and adolescent neural reactivity to negative and positive emotional stimuli among a suburban, mostly upper middle-class (53% birth-assigned girl

Developmental differences in the acquisition of tolerance to ethanol.

This study was designed to compare the development of tolerance to ethanol in adolescent and adult rats. Rats were pretreated with ethanol (4 g/kg) twice daily by intragastric gavage for 3 or 7 days, and then challenged with a single IP dose of ethanol (5 g/kg). Throughout the pretreatment period body temperature was measured before and after the morning dosage. During the IP challenge test we measured body temperature, duration of the loss of righting reflex, and blood ethanol level upon regaining the righting reflex. The adolescent rats that were pretreated for 7 days developed greater toler

Overview of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and associated factors: a scoping review.

Around the world, idiopathic scoliosis accounts for the majority of occurrences of adolescent scoliosis. The absence of underlying congenital or neuromuscular problems distinguishes adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), which affects children ages 13 to 18, from other kinds of scoliosis. The prevalence of AIS is influenced by a number of variables, such as physical activity, gender, backpacks, body mass index, and others. AIS has an impact on the child's development not just physically but also psychologically, emotionally, and mentally. This study used nationwide databases to describe the pr

The role of mother-adolescent relationship quality in moderating the effect of adolescent anxiety on psychosocial functioning.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of anxiety on adolescents' psychosocial outcomes are well established, but little consideration has been given to the potential influence of the parent-adolescent relationship in moderating these effects. This study examined the moderating role of parent-adolescent connectedness and hostility in the association between anxiety and adolescent psychosocial functioning (measured by positive development [PD] and oppositional defiant behaviour [ODB]) within a community sample of mothers of adolescents. METHOD: Participants were 723 Australian mothers (M age = 44.05 years, SD

The Effect of Parents and Peers on the Neural Correlates of Risk Taking and Antisocial Behavior During Adolescence.

Social and neurobiological factors independently associate with the development of antisocial behavior during adolescence, yet it is unclear how these factors contribute to antisocial behavior in girls. Using a longitudinal sample of 45 adolescent girls (age in years at scan: M = 15.38, SD = 0.33), this study examined the contributions of parent-adolescent relationship quality and deviant peer affiliation from 6th-8th grades along with the neural correlates of risk taking in 9th grade to later antisocial behavior. High parent-adolescent closeness in early adolescence predicted lower antisocial

A Qualitative Exploration on Risk and Protective Factors of Substance Use Among Black Adolescent Girls.

OBJECTIVE: While Black adolescent girls use drugs at much lower rates than White and Hispanic girls, Black adolescent girls often have worse health outcomes due to drug use. This study seeks to highlight the voices of Black adolescent girls in order to understand their unique risk factors for substance use and misuse. METHODS: Utilizing the intersectionality and ecological systems theoretical frameworks, the research team conducted twelve focus groups among a sample of Black adolescent girls (N = 62) between the ages of 13-18 (M = 15.6 years SD = 1.50). RESULTS: Thematic analysis was conduct

[Developmental trajectories of anxiety disorder symptoms in adolescents: a five-year prospective community study].

BACKGROUND: The relatively recent adoption of modern statistical analysis methods, such as latent growth modelling (lgm), makes it possible to study differences in the individual trajectories of development over time. AIM: To examine prospectively the developmental trajectories of anxiety disorder symptoms in a large sample of adolescents (N = 1,318) from the general population over a period of five years. METHOD: The adolescents were divided into two cohorts: early adolescents (average age 12 at the first measurement) and middle adolescents (average age 16 at the first measurement). Age and

Residents' perception of their skill levels in the clinical management of adolescent health problems.

Residents in six specialty training programs completed a 126-item questionnaire designed to assess their skill or confidence to manage adolescent health issues. The residency programs studied were family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, and combined medicine/pediatrics. Although almost three-fourths of the residents were at least moderately interested in adolescent health care and 90% expected to care for adolescents, only 26% believed an adolescent rotation should be required during training. Residents generally considered themselves unskille

Adolescent suicide.

In the introduction to this report our committee, with its focus on adolescent development, expressed its concern that adolescent suicidal behavior represented a grave crisis in the adolescent, a crisis not only in the development of the adolescent but one that endangers the existence of the adolescent. The possibility of a fatal outcome is abhorrent to us as physicians and psychiatrists, as it is to all those entrusted with the care and development of our fellow human beings. Consequently, we explored the ways in which developmental and other forces lead to adolescent suicide and the measures…

Parental Antisocial and Psychopathic Traits Influence Adolescent Psychopathology.

The role of parental antisocial behavior in the development of adolescent psychopathology is well established in the literature. However, less is known about the role of parental psychopathic traits in offspring psychopathology. Adolescents (N = 210; boys = 107) and their parents participated in a study measuring parental antisocial behavior, psychopathic traits (i.e., callous-unemotional traits, impulsive-irresponsibility, and grandiosity), and adolescent psychopathology, including depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and c

Early adolescents' perceptions of their mother's anxious parenting as a predictor of anxiety symptoms 12 months later.

Parental overprotection and modeling of fearful behaviors have been proposed to play a central role in the development of anxiety. Yet there have been few longitudinal examinations of these relationships and virtually none focusing on the adolescent period. The current study measured adolescent perceptions of maternal anxious parenting (a combination of overprotection and expression of anxiety), mothers' levels of anxiousness, and adolescents' anxiety symptoms in 421 girls in grade 7 and their mothers. Measures were repeated 12 months later. When the adolescent's self report of anxiety was use

Impaired fear recognition and social anxiety symptoms in adolescence.

This study represents the first examination of adolescent anxiety in relation to peer emotion recognition, rather than adult emotion recognition. Additionally, we examine potential mechanisms for the development of Social Anxiety in females. Facial emotion recognition (FER) is important for accurate social cognition, which is impaired in individuals with various disorders, including anxiety disorders. Social anxiety often onsets during adolescence, is observed more commonly in females, and is often associated with FER difficulties. Given the importance of peer interaction during adolescence, a

Parental Alcohol Use Predicts Neural Emotion Reactivity and Substance Use Intentions in Early Adolescence.

Parents' alcohol use may influence adolescent substance use and substance use intentions. Prior research has linked adolescents' emotion reactivity with parental drinking behaviors and adolescent substance use. The present study investigated whether sub-clinical maternal alcohol use relates to adolescent neural emotion reactivity and substance use intentions in early adolescence. Early adolescents (N = 70) viewed emotional images during a fMRI scan and completed a questionnaire about substance use intentions. Their mothers reported past 30-day alcohol use. Results showed that greater frequency

Mind the Fathers: Associations of Parental Childhood Adversities With Borderline Personality Disorder Pathology in Female Adolescents.

Previous research revealed significant relations between the experience of childhood adversity (CA) and the development of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adulthood. However, it is still uncertain whether parental CA could have a transgenerational association with adolescent BPD. We investigated associations between parents' CA (antipathy, neglect, physical abuse) and BPD traits within a clinical adolescent sample and tested for mediating variables. The sample consists of 91 female inpatients, along with 84 mothers and 59 fathers. Adolescent BPD traits were assessed using the BPD modu

Neuropsychiatric diagnosis and psychotropic medication prescription patterns in a mental hospital-based child and adolescent psychiatric service in Nigeria.

Mental hospital-based data on child and adolescent psychiatric services are uncommon in low-resource countries, although such data are important for service development and planning. Data are reported on neuropsychiatric diagnoses and psychotropic medication prescription in a child and adolescent psychiatric service in southeastern Nigeria. Schizophrenia-like and other psychotic disorders, followed by seizure disorders, were the most prevalent, while the least prevalent included autism spectrum disorders, enuresis, adolescent postpartum psychosis, and adjustment disorders, among others.
