Aerospace stressors and brain health in military aviators: a glymphatic-neurovascular framework.

Military aviation exposes aircrew to interacting physiological and operational stressors that are often studied in isolation. These stressor … re profiles also differ substantially among fighter, cargo/tanker, helicopter, and remotely piloted aircraft communities. We therefore propose an exposure-resolved research agenda combining longitudinal neuroimaging, circulating biomarkers, electroencephalography, cognitive testing, sleep phenotyping, dosimetry, and controlled single- and combined-stressor …

Comparing neuronal oscillations during visual spatial attention orienting between normobaric and hypobaric hypoxia.

Normobaric hypoxia (NH) and hypobaric hypoxia (HH) are both used to train aircraft pilots to recognize symptoms of hypoxia. NH (low oxygen concentration) training is often preferred because it is more cost effective, simpler, and safer than HH. It is unclear, however, whether NH is neurophysiologically equivalent to HH (high altitude). Previous studies have shown that neural oscillations, particularly those in the alpha band (8-12 Hz), are impacted by hypoxia. Attention tasks have been shown to reliably modulate alpha oscillations, although the neurophysiological impacts of hypoxia during cogn…

Contact lenses and corrective flying spectacles in military aircrew--implications for flight safety.

BACKGROUND: Refractive devices used by aviators need to suit the aerospace environment or their failure can have serious implications. A relatively minor visual disability can result in loss of life and aircraft. We surveyed commonly occurring problems with the different types of refractive correction worn by Royal Air Force (RAF) aircrew over the previous 12 mo. We also asked if they had experienced any flight safety incidents (FSI) relating to their refractive correction. METHODS: A retrospective anonymous questionnaire survey was given to 700 active aircrew occupationally graded as requiri…

Field performance of sterile male mosquitoes released from an uncrewed aerial vehicle.

Genetic control methods of mosquito vectors of malaria, dengue, yellow fever, and Zika are becoming increasingly popular due to the limitations of other techniques such as the use of insecticides. The sterile insect technique is an effective genetic control method to manage insect populations. However, it is crucial to release sterile mosquitoes by air to ensure homogeneous coverage, especially in large areas. Here, we report a fully automated adult mosquito release system operated from an uncrewed aerial vehicle or drone. Our system, developed and tested in Brazil, enabled a homogeneous dispe

Lessons learned from an in-flight medical event.

Air transportation, although safe, exposes passengers to distinct physical, psychological, and physiological stressors that may be well tolerated in a healthy passenger but may trigger or exacerbate a medical event in a passenger with underlying medical problems. This article describes how a medical provider on the flight assisted with a medical emergency on a transatlantic flight.

Case Report of a Hypobaric Chamber Fitness to Fly Test in a Child With Severe Cystic Lung Disease.

Patients with severe cystic lung disease are considered to be at risk for cyst rupture during air travel because of the possibility of increase in cyst size and impaired equilibration of pressure between the cysts and other parts of the lung. This may have clinically devastating consequences for the patient but may also result in significant costs for emergency alteration of flight schedule. We report the use of a hypobaric chamber to simulate cabin pressure changes encountered on a commercial flight to assess the safety to fly of a child with severe cystic lung disease secondary to Langerhans

Heart rate variability profiles and exposure therapy treatment outcome in flight phobia.

The goal of this study was to explore why certain patients in a previous study on exposure therapy for flight phobia did not experience an improvement in their conditions. Participants from a treatment study (N = 45) were selected according to post-treatment results and divided into two groups: the unsatisfactory treatment outcome group (UTO, N = 10) and the satisfactory treatment outcome group (STO, N = 10). The differences between these two groups prior to receiving exposure therapy were analyzed at the behavioral, physiological, and cognitive levels. The UTO participants had been avoiding f

Anxiety sensitivity moderates the relationship of changes in physiological arousal with flight anxiety during in vivo exposure therapy.

Physiological sensations and discomfort constitute the major symptoms reported by aviophobics. Anxiety sensitivity (AS) seems to moderate the relationship between self-reported somatic sensations and flight anxiety, and AS has been identified as a vulnerability factor for flight phobia. In this study we examined whether AS moderates the effects of somatic sensations and autonomic nervous system reactivity on flight anxiety induced by real flight. In fifty aviophobics participating in Cognitive Behaviour Group Therapy (CBGT), flight anxiety, somatic sensations and autonomic nervous system react

Cognitive coping and anxiety symptoms among people who seek help for fear of flying.

INTRODUCTION: Fear of flying among potential passengers is rather common. In order to treat fear of flying most efficiently, it is important to find out which aspects are related to flight anxiety. The objective of the present study was to examine the extent to which various cognitive coping strategies in response to a flight were used by airline passengers and their relationship with anxiety symptoms. METHOD: A total of 261 persons who were all seeking treatment for fear of flying filled in the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, the anxiety subscales of the Symptom Check List (SCL-9

Night vision goggles, human factors aspects--a questionnaire survey of helicopter aircrew.

Night vision goggles have become an essential component of military aviation. They provide superior visual capability over unaided night vision, but there are several inherent limitations associated with human factors and systems limitations. This study used a questionnaire survey of Army helicopter aircrew to investigate the incidence of human factors problems which continued after NVG use, with particular reference to visual problems and neck discomfort. It also looked at hardware interaction problems, such as cockpit lighting, and other aspects of NVG use, such as training and aircrew conce

Balance disturbances in individuals with vibroacoustic disease.

INTRODUCTION: In previous studies, patients with vibroacoustic disease (VAD) presented hyperintense foci in T2 of the cerebral white matter, brainstem and basal nuclei. The most probable etiology is ischemia. One of the most frequent complaints of these patients is balance disturbances which, in two cases, has threatened the patients' ability to maintain their jobs. The purpose of this study was to compare two methods, one neurophysiological (auditory evoked potentials - AEP) and the other structural imaging (brain MRI), in order to determine to what extent the changes detected with these meth
